ECONOMIC COMMANDS-A CATASROPHE FOR THE COMMON MAN
Economists talk about economics that they tend to believe as economic structure friendly to the common man. Every year budgets are framed to remove gaps in order to help economy grow and benefit all particularly the common man. There is a basic difference between the common man and businessmen (entrepreneurs}. Entrepreneurs have much better clout in the entire economic structuring and they one way or the other get concessions for steady growth. This of course is necessary to build the nations’ growth. The growth attained by entrepreneurs appears growing in terms of exports or for domestic consumption. Of course there is hardly any remote room for lowering down or even maintaining status-quo to hold price line of essentials within the reach of the common man on the domestic front. Here the line toed is while growth is to be achieved, it is essential to maintain certain higher price level even of essential commodities either due to their own overheads or profit gearing adventures. The Government falls prey to further concessions to entrepreneurs and documents prepared based on statistics on inputs and outputs indicate growth oriented structure on paper leaving the common man to suffer life long as he does not get any relief because of ever spiraling prices. Under globalization, imports of essential commodities should only be allowed at affordable prices by the common man. The same stand should hold good for indigenous commodities. Here in support of higher prices of outputs comes the view of sophistication and ultramodern techniques employed and advanced through high powered media. But this glamour actually leads only to higher price settings. If this line of approach is maintained, then perhaps the entire economy will be both co-product and by-product of rich brackets under the garb of growth, classified as ‘Grand Economic Planning’. In this a common set of rule is advanced leading to: I) Curtailment of interest rate on loans to entrepreneurs and various tax holidays.
ii) Constant and heavy hand ruling on curtailment of interest on deposits by common man (individual holdings) in Post Office and various banks.
There should be a distinct difference in approach pattern for deposit interest rates for individual depositors and corporate sector loans. Same yardsticks for both cannot be a guide line for any nation to make the living of common man happy. The entrepreneurs can afford flexible loan interest on their huge volume loans as the control is with them to fix up profit range. But how do we go about the common man caring? His deposits are small either by way of savings out of pension, provident fund releases or small gains by ordinary persons engaged in various trades individually. They deposit their hard saved amounts in deposits. Constant reductions in bank interest rates do affect income on their fixed principal amounts. Further the pockets of retired do not grow and we cannot compare their deposits with industry loans. Again loans given to industries are out of huge collections from common men. If this source is not there, how do we advance loans and exist in banking operations? So do we really respect the source? No. The regular ruling is to reduce FD rates of common man, with a specific goal of reducing bank rate on loans taken by rich brackets. How many are there amongst common men wanting to take loans for growth risks? This is the privilege of entrepreneurs. The common men, particularly senior citizens, only want to live comfortably after slogging for whole life out of meager interest income obtained on fixed time deposits. The story of working category of common man is also not encouraging as they also suffer on their deposits due to interest rate cuts. Here it is to be
2
thought by all economists that banking process should be different for the common man and entrepreneurs. Further the bank rate should be attractive for the common man, considering the following-
. Amount slab wise (deposit amounts}
. Duration
. Age group, to cater particularly senior citizens
If the above is considered, it will make life somewhat comfortable. The interest obtained by the common man should be seen as a livelihood. This is essential as the entire economic process hardly gives any benefit on reduction of prices of essential commodities including communication, transport, water, electricity, shelter, clothes, food and other regular needs. They can at least try to ensure that both ends can be met.
While granting steady benefits for exports and domestic consumption, care should be taken to have some soft corner for the common man. The outputs should be within his reach. Here prices should be within the common man’s range – suiting to per-capita income of an ordinary person of the country, to be assessed by the economists. The economic structure cannot be one for all but should be segregated for entrepreneurs and the common man (public). Strictly speaking entrepreneurs are built on the strength of the common man. So the life of the common man is important. The choice is not with the common man and he has to live with the mercy of controls. While advanced countries do guarantee social cover for the public, developing countries have to go a long way to reach out to the common man to extend essential facilities.
Common man does not understand jargon of economic ratios. He has never benefited from any of these. His basic needs of shelter, clothes, food, and health are never within his affordable bracket. The prices always go up and we go on saying that it is due to globalization and the public will get used to it- this in practical terms is a miserable situation.
The Theory of Relativity should be the main theme of economics dealing with the common man and economic structure on a happy note. If the common man is not taken care of, both the beginning and end of any economic norms will be seriously affected.
