Azharuddin becomes the highest run-getter (displacing Desmond Haynes, 8648 runs) in One day International cricket history in the Coca Cola cup, Sharjah 1998. He becomes the first Indian to achieve this milestone.

Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen was born on this day in 1933 at Shantiniketan. He got his Nobel in Economic Sciences for his work in welfare economics in 1998. Sen's notable work for India includes the book "Poverty and Famines: An Essay on Entitlement and Deprivation" (1981), a book in which he argued that Bengal famine of 1943 occurs not only from a lack of food, but from inequalities built into mechanisms for distributing food. Sen also argued that the Bengal famine was caused by an urban economic boom that raised food prices, thereby causing millions of rural workers to starve to death when their wages did not keep up. He is also known for being one of the strongest champions of rationalism, secularism and egalitarianism in India. He is now serving as a Professor of Economics and Philosophy at the prestigious Harvard University. He is also the chancellor of Nalanda University

On this day in 1966, Mihir Sen ( Padma shri, Padma Bhushan) swam the Panama Canal in 34 hours 15 minutes. He is best known for being the first Indian to conquer the English Channel from Dover to Calais in 1958 and the only man to earn the distinction of swimming the Oceans of the five continents in one calender year (1966)

Sukumar Ray a Bengali humorous poet, story writer and playwright who mainly wrote for children was born today in 1887. His works such as the collection of poems "Aboltabol" ,novella "HaJaBaRaLa", short story collection "Pagla Dashu" and play "Chalachittachanchari" are considered equal in stature to Alice in Wonderland. More than 80 years after his death, Ray remains one of the most popular of children's writers in both West Bengal and Bangladesh.
