Theatre Studies at WIT

Theatre Studies is available as both a major and a minor subject on the BA Arts (Honours) programme, Waterford Institute of Technology, [WD200].

This page introduces Theatre Studies as a new module available on the BA (Hons.) Arts programme at Waterford Institute of Technology. The course introduces students to the practice and performance of theatre as well as to the academic study of the area. Students will study major plays from Ireland and abroad but also will have the opportunity to participate in workshops where they can act, direct, and produce their own work as well as the work of major playwrights. Also available in WIT is a certificate in Theatre Practice a one-year programme over two semesters. Contact [email protected] or [email protected] for further details. The emphasis in the course is on practical application and the course will offer to students the opportunity to work within a “studio” environment. The course builds on strong partnerships with local and regional theatre groups who have all lent their support to the development. Students of Theatre Studies also take other subjects as part of their degree. This exposes students to other disciplines and ways of thinking and there is a strong emphasis in WIT on encouraging dialogue between subject areas. Students also take a number of important modules in critical and creative thinking and research skills. The kinds of skills developed through these types of modules in particular form the foundation for future years and are highly valued by employers. Students will find at WIT a supportive and stimulating study environment where discussion and debate are valued and encouraged. Staff are welcoming and friendly and their approach to teaching is dynamic and enjoyable.

Rough Magic and Kilkenny Arts Festival present
MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING Friday 15th November @ 8 p.m. by William Shakespeare

On the deck of a deluxe mobile home a group of friends gather for a week-long party full of cocktail-infused debauchery, bad dancing and questionable gender politics.
As the celebrations continue, two couples emerge. Claudio and Hero fall deeply and madly in love, while Benedick and Beatrice resume their altogether more quarrelsome romance.
Much Ado About Nothing charts the course of these two star-crossed courtships as malicious rumour and pointed lies threaten to tear them both apart.

After last year’s award-winning production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in the Castle Yard in Kilkenny, Rough Magic returns with a vivid contemporary staging of Shakespeare's celebrated screwball comedy.

This festive production of deception and excess, sparkling wit and linguistic exuberance asks: can we ever truly know the people we love?

Directed by Ronan Phelan
Set Design by Sabine Dargent
Lighting Design by Sarah Jane Shiels
Costume Design by Catherine Fay
Sound Design and Composition by Denis Clohessy
Starring Clare Barrett, Venetia Bowe, Peter Corboy, Maeve Fitzgerald, Shane O’Regan, Patrick Martins, Margaret McAuliffe, Jack Mullarkey & Conor O’Riordan.

Margaret Atwood: Live In Cinemas

Calling all Margaret Atwood fans in Waterford! To launch the publication of 'The Testaments', the sequel to 'The Handmaid's Tale' (1985), Odeon cinemas are screening an interview with the author on 10th of September, an event which will include excerpts from the new book (squeal!). Margaret Atwood's highly anticipated sequel to the Handmaid's Tale is revealed.

[08/18/19]   Kate went to see an adaptation of Thomas Kilroy’s #TheBigChapelX as part of Kilkenny Arts Festival last night which was site-specific performance at its best because it was made in and for the site in question—Callan—with many of the creative and production team also based there. In fact, it seemed like the whole town was involved; the onlookers from pubs and upstairs windows smiled at our enjoyment and urged us to follow the action! The performers moved us seamlessly from space to space, casting us as part of Callan’s story. However, this was a story with universal appeal, as it explored the age-old concept of power and the division that inevitably ensues—a tale relevant to our times. Practical, yet beautiful, design choices in each site contrasted with the urban or, at times, claimed attention to the hidden and private spaces, allowing us a fascinating journey through Callan’s history and geography. The choir and music were sublime on an autumn evening. As the couple who walked me to my car said, “I hope they do it again, next year!”. And so say all of us. Well done to all involved. #MadeInCallan The Big Chapel #EquinoxTheatre #AsylumProductions Abbey Theatre

Killing Stella - Gaitkrash

Save the date: Killing Stella by Gaitkrash coming to Waterford Theatre Royal on Friday 6th of September.

Don't miss it, it'll be great!

Stella is dead, the funeral is over and Anna’s husband, Richard, has taken the children to his mother’s for the weekend. Alone at last, Anna has two days ahead of her to make sense of the catastrophe that ensues when she takes the 19-year-old Stella into her home. She can’t help the baby bird shrieking in the garden for its mother, but she could have helped Stella.

Killing Stella is inspired by Marlen Haushofer’s compelling novella Wir töten Stella (Austria, 1958), an unflinching story of collusion in abuse, and the price that has to be paid for remaining silent.

In keeping with Gaitkrash’s signature exploration across art forms to create cutting-edge theatre, the performers, Bernadette Cronin (actor) and Eimear Reidy (cello), create a multi-layered language of performance to tell this story of the subtle abuse of a powerless young woman, the trauma of teenage pregnancy, and the damage that unfolds when the witness remains silent. Original composition, visual aesthetic, movement and monologue are interwoven to form a finely-tuned and tightly spun tapestry.

Killing Stella is an unflinching story of collusion in abuse, and the price that has to be paid for remaining silent. A story of the subtle abuse of a powerl...
