Flexibility needs to be balanced with strength and vice versa. If you have one without the other, it leads to problems in the body. This has been my case, with instability in the joints due to my focusing solely on flexibility for many years. Yin and yang, sthira and sukha - you need both ☯️

This type of workout is tough for me but my body responds positively to it and it helps to balance my yin yoga practice 👍🏻 Today’s session was outside in the fresh air which helped a lot, and was led by @thefitnessgrub (aka the little sister).

I’ve become more aware that my body is changing. Practising body awareness by sensing, feeling, listening and tuning into my body’s communication with me, has revealed how I’m no longer working with a 20-year old body as I seem to have thought I was up until recently.

These last few years have shown how my body no longer wants some of the movement that I was forcing on it and that was leading to repetitive injury. And so I’m exploring a way to keep my 40-year old body healthy and agile by experimenting with different types of movement and finding what my body responds positively to. This was just what I needed this morning to kickstart my day - a lovely #slowflow #yoga session with @clariayoga. I decided to listen to my body and not wake up at the crack of dawn but instead have a lie-in, greet the day nicely and gently and start my day with a yoga session to help stretch out my lower body after waking up with muscle soreness after my leg session yesterday.

In this picture, I had the wall behind me. I felt I wouldn’t be able to sustain the balance on my own that day and that I would need help. In the end, I didn’t use it but it was nice to know that it was there if I needed support.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s not a weakness, it’s a strength. You’re honouring yourself and staying true to yourself. Sometimes just finding the courage to open up, ask a friend, and receive an offer of support, unveils a little extra strength, motivation, balance etc. that you didn’t know was already within you...

This year has presented new challenges for everyone, and as we move into the colder season for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, it has never been more important to focus on our health - keeping a strong immune system, staying active, trying to keep perspective and positivity to help relieve worry and anxiety, and giving ourselves some much-needed "me" time to find balance again.

Until the end of the year, I will carry on teaching online only and provide you with a choice of classes, hopefully giving you the opportunity to carve out a little hour or two (or three or four!) in the week to focus on yourselves.

The next series of classes will run for 4 weeks from Monday 19 October to Thursday 12 November. The timetable and sign-up process are now available to view at https://clariayoga.com/yoga-classes. There will be one more series after that, before Christmas, and I will be in touch with you in November to confirm those dates.

Providing you with shorter courses as I have been doing over the last few months has hopefully been giving you flexibility without having to commit to so many weeks up-front.

As always, if you have questions about any of the classes, please do get in touch with me. I understand that you miss in-person classes as much as I miss the interaction with you all. I aim to make myself available to you between classes whether by phone or email, to ensure that you have access to me for any doubts about the practices, questions about how your body or mind are responding, or just a chat! It’s that kind of day today. I was supposed to be jetting off back home to Portugal and was so looking forward to catching up with my parents and being on retreat with Thefitnessgrub and Esther Ekhart. But I have been nursing a chest illness. Add to that a sacrum injury and Ireland now being back in Level 3, and it’s clear the universe has other plans for me. The face says it all... Heights are not my favourite thing but when I got there I thought it might be fun. I was wrong. I was terrified and had to be helped around the first third of the route. It was a fascinating experience to see how my mind and emotions directed my body, which either froze or trembled. The power of the breath is amazing as it helped me eventually to get back in tune with my body and get it moving again. Somehow I made it round the whole thing...

Zip lining was fun but the best part was getting back down to ground level 😂

Welcome to Claria Yoga, a holistic therapeutic practice, which aims to help you regain a balanced body and mind. Rooted in Hatha Yoga and Restorative Yoga, my practice is fluid, supportive and nurturing, and accommodates all body types, respecting each person’s body structure and journey. With my training and own personal experiences, I help you to gently unlock your ability to move, change and heal in order to relieve tense muscles, aching joints and general physical discomfort. In addition to developing physical strength and increasing mobility, stamina and focus, the practice can help you achieve inner calm, experience deep relaxation, and relieve stress and anxiety. I encourage body awareness and mindfulness to help all who work with me embrace their unique body structure and safely access the healing benefits of yoga. Having worked with different age groups and conditions, from children and teenagers, to senior adults, injury rehabilitation, and adults with special needs, I welcome anyone who wishes to practise with me.
