A reminder of our webinar with artist Helen Flanagan this Thursday at 7:30pm.

Helen is a socially engaged artist, writer and member of Friends of Ardee Bog. Her work involves performance, film and radio-making, alongside producing lively social spaces that blend informal education and community knowledge sharing, collaborative making, and magic. Helen will introduce her work and talk about The Bog Cafe, a micro festival come social space which Friends of Ardee Bog started in 2022 as well as some of the groups other projects (a community film, oral history and deep mapping).

Tonight’s colourful sunset, in the snow, at one of the strangest prehistoric dolmens in Ireland. Aghnacliffe Dolmen in County Longford is a portal tomb, likely dating to something in the range of 3,800-3,500 BC, but this is a dolmen with a difference.

The giant upper capstone is balanced on a smaller boulder which is resting on just two chamber stones. There is only one portal stone holding up the large capstone. It’s not clear if it was intentionally built like this or whether a second portal stone was originally present and later removed. If there was a second portal stone it may have been somewhat ‘surplus to requirements’ since the capstone does not seem to have extend far enough across the chamber to have been supported by a stone in the usual position.

Maybe there was a second stone originally, but when the capstone was raised into position it balanced best on just the lower capstone and a single portal stone.

The end result is something like a strange megalithic Jenga puzzle.

Ireland 1845-52. "Families slept on dried rushes or straw thrown on the floor. Fifty-one percent of the population were living in the most wretched of conditions - 4th class housing (mud huts). With hundreds of thousands in 3rd class houses (small stone cabins), which were little better. If any sign of material progress presented itself, it would attract the attention of the landlord or agent. This could lead to a crippling increase in rent".Taken from The Truth Behind The Irish Famine: www.jerrymulvihill.com
