Ruth Miskin Training 10/02/2022

Ruth Miskin Training

As you know, we’ve started to follow Read Write Inc in school.

You may have noticed your child doing some ‘Fred Talk’ - a really important stage of the Phonics sessions.

I’ve attached a video to demonstrate exactly what it is. Today Fred is at the aquarium. Can you join in? What would you see if you went to the farm? Maybe a c-ow or a p-i-g?

📱💻 On Tuesday 8th February we will be joining schools and youth organisations across the UK in celebrating Safer Internet Day 2022. 💻📱

Safer Internet Day is a global campaign to promote the safe and responsible use of technology, which calls on young people, parents, carers, teachers, social workers, law enforcement, companies, policymakers, and more to join together in helping to create a better internet.

Using the internet safely and positively is a key message that we promote at Whitgreave Primary School, and celebrating Safer Internet Day is a great opportunity for us to re-emphasise the online safety messages we deliver throughout the year.

Mrs Butters will be delivering a whole school virtual assembly explaining Safer Internet day and the children will be completing Safer Internet Day activities.

For more information and top tips to help your child stay safe online visit, https://saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/safer-internet-day-2022/top-tips-for-under-11s

🧬🧬Just before Christmas, I sent out a Family Science project for children to try out at home with their family members. It was all about 'Walking Water' (or Capillary Action, to use the scientific term!). A couple of parents and children sent me some information and pictures to show me what they'd done - it definitely looks like they had fun! 🧬🧬

The first one is from Bobby, in Nursery:
Bobby told me the colours we had at the start and enjoyed stirring in colours and when we went back, he saw the new colours and we talked about how yellow and red make orange, blue and yellow make green and red and blue make purple. Our blue was a bit dark and the red was not strong enough but it was very interesting to see.

The next one is from Ali and Muhammad, in Year 1 and Year 4:
For the science experiment, we gathered up all 7 of the cups. Then, we got the water, food colouring and the tissues. We added the water, then we added the colour. When we cut the tissues in half, me and my brother, Ali, bent them precisely to make them look like archways so that the fibre found in plants, cellulose, could lift the water molecules up into the empty cups. We waited, and the colours - orange, green, and purple - formed in the empty cups at different times. In the end, we ended up waiting for a day and a half for all of the colours to form.

Every half term, another Family Science activity will be sent out. Each one uses things you can usually find around the house - nothing expensive or unusual! If you'd like to have a go at one of them, I'd love to hear about it - all the details can be found on the letter (the next one will be out before February half term 🙂).
Mrs Barrett (Science Lead)

Remember to apply on time, if you haven’t already!

The deadline for reception class places is this Saturday (15 January), so if your child is due to start school for the first time this autumn and you haven't applied yet, please do so today at www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/admissions.

More than 85% of parents and carers of children who will start school for the first time in September have now applied for a place for them. The application process is straightforward and should only take a few minutes to complete, so please set aside some time today and submit yours.

Remember that even if your child is in nursery provision at either primary or infant school, you will still need to apply for a reception class place, and that applying after the deadline could have a detrimental effect on the chance of securing a place at one of your preferred schools.

Team Whitgreave - can you help?! One of our parents is currently doing a very good deed for the community and we’d like to support her. She says:

❄️🌨I’m doing a collection for the homeless and taking them some warm soup round. Has anyone got any old sleeping blankets, coats, gloves etc? It’s freezing out so anything to help them to keep warm in this cold weather would be much appreciated.❄️🌨

If you have anything you can donate, please drop in to Mrs Cox and she will pass it on for us!
