Theatre and Illiberal Regimes - Call for Papers | Institute for Advanced Study
The year 2024 has been a difficult for democracy around the world. Illiberal gains across the world consolidated a pre-existent global ascendence. Endocrine Regimes/Endokrin rezsimek:
Friday night Judit Sandor had the honor of giving an introductory speech to a fantastically exciting exhibition at the Trafó Gallery at the grand opening. Five outstanding artists explored how we can understand, accept, and live with depression, infertility, and other physical and mental conditions, and how we can process these traumas, illnesses, and conditions with the help of artistic imagination, and thus connect with others.
The exhibition Soaking in Each Other - Endocrine Regimes examines the intertwining and concrete – in a material sense – interconnection of human and non-human bodies, technologies, and the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries through the work of artists who focus on the malleable boundaries of bodily existence and the socio-political consequences of biotechnologies. Their creative practices question the interpretation of the body as a separate, autonomous entity, and view it as a dynamic constellation, constantly changing and reshaping, fluctuating, allowing the flow of materials and meanings, with porous boundaries, influenced by environmental, technological, and social factors.
The exhibition pays special attention to hormonal processes, the hormonal micromanagement of our physical and mental states. Hormones are the body’s chemical messengers, determining many bodily functions, including our appetite, sleep patterns, stress tolerance, libido, fertility, fitness, anxiety, and mood. Managing our hormones has come a long way in the past century: some hormonal treatments have provided us with significant benefits, but certain aspects of their use have also had and continue to have controversial consequences to this day. The knowledge about hormones, the history of interventions in our body’s hormonal system, has simultaneously reproduced and rewritten our ideas about the body and health, as well as gender.
How does the dissolution of the boundary between organic and synthetic transform our self-image? How do we navigate this system, how does our mind track physical changes, and what is our responsibility in these transitional states?

Laurence Crowley Lecture Series with Professor Judit Sandor
Date: Monday, January 20, 2025
Time: 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Venue: On-campus, Blackrock
Location: UCD Smurfit School
Lecture Title: The Ethics of Predictive Technologies in Biomedicine
Each year UCD Smurfit School hosts the annual Laurence Crowley Lecture Series. Running since 2014, this year's lecture features Professor Judit Sandor who will speak about The Ethics of Predictive Technologies in Biomedicine.
Abstract
Prediction has always been an important element of medicine and health care. While prediction has been based traditionally on past experience and existing case studies in health care, it is more future oriented today and works with various degrees of presumption. The Human Genome Project allowed for an increasing use of genetic tests, for the analysis and interpretation of big data within biobanks, for the application of diagnostic laser, artificial intelligence, and several other prediction technologies in healthcare. The use of these emerging technologies in human reproduction, therapy and biomedical research has expanded rapidly. But what are the ethical challenges of using these technologies in health care? Should we reinterpret the standards of informed consent? What is the role of genetic consultation today? How and to what extent uncertainty should be communicated to patients? How should digital healthcare be personalized? Technoethics, together with bioethics, should be integrated into the rapidly developing field of predictive medicine. The presentation will explore the possibilities and consequences of this integration.

Death cannot be defeated, but dignity is worth fighting for - A halált nem lehet legyőzni, a méltóságért azonban érdemes küzdeni
Perhaps we would do the most for the memory of Dániel Karsai if we continued the discussion he started from here; because no one can seriously think that a successful lawyer who loves to live, work, and play sports would promote the cult of death. Written by Judit Sándor.

Today we enjoyed the inspiring presentation by Prof. Scott Burris on legal epidemiology and the future of policy evaluation research. Good laws should be based on well designed policy evaluation. Lawyers should be curious to enter into the domain of social sciences and if necessary even to challenge and shape the relevant policy research.

Yesterday, the workshop participants visited the Blinken OSA Archivum, an institution that serves as a repository for significant collections and historical documents related to the Cold War, international human rights violations, and marginalized communities such as the Roma, LGBTQI+ individuals, and people with disabilities. The Archivum, located in the Goldberger House at Arany János Street 32, also serves as the official archive for the Central European University (CEU) and the Open Society Foundations network.
During our visit, we toured the Archivum and explored the exhibition Basalt. Layers of Oblivion, which delves into the largely forgotten history of a forced labor camp at the Badacsony basalt quarry. The exhibition, curated by Iván Székely, weaves together archival documents and artistic interpretations, examining the complex layers of memory and oblivion surrounding this history.
