from Assistant Director of academic affairs, Stephana Lorwinsky. Last year Stephana attended a mental health summit in Cap Haitien, KasiK Ayiti, with other psychologists and mental health professionals in Haiti. She reflected on her experience, “I was happily shocked to see so many Haitians that want to take action in building sustainable peace in Haiti. Mental Health professionals in action that suggested we change the narrative of how people perceive Haiti and that begins with understanding and teaching the history of our country.”
Meet staff member Bury Ephesien, director of student recruitment at FTSJS gave a presentation on “How Kòd Nwa Changed my Perception of my Skin, a personal account of how knowing history can build pride in oneself.” He says, “as human beings, our identity is extremely important. If we forget where we came from that can affect our identity and make us think that we are not good enough. As a Haitian, my history plays a huge role in who I am today. It saved my identity and my self-esteem, and now, I am very proud of my skin and my nationality. Let's talk about a piece of Haitian history, which is "Kòd Nwa."

Ann rankontre Rycado Carasco Etidyan FTSJS!
Rycado reflechi sou bezwen ki genyen nan bay travayè sosyal yo fòmasyon an Ayiti. "Nou gen anpil pwoblèm: Gwo pwoblem ak ti pwoblèm. M konnen travay sosyal se yon pwofesyon ki pwomote chanjman ak devlopman. Menm si gen enstabilite politik ak pwoblèm ekonomik, moun yo toujou bezwen èd; travayè sosyal yo esansyèl. Travayè sosyal yo gen abilite pou konekte moun yo ak bezwen yo. Si peyi a te gen plis travayè sosyal pou travay pou moun yo, konekte ak fè pledwari pou moun yo, anpil bagay tap change."
Meet FTSJS student Rycado Carasco!
Rycardo reflected on the need for trained social workers in Haiti, "We have many many many problems both large and small. I know that social work is a profession that promotes social change and development. Even if there is political instability or economic problems, people still need help; social workers are essential. Social workers have the skills to connect people with what they need. If the country had more social workers to work for the people, connect and advocate for people, many things would change."

Supporting social workers is supporting the betterment of communities, people, and those who are in need. Social workers provide public awareness of social justice issues, promote peace, and aim to see that people have access to information, basic resources, and opportunity.

Akòz pwoblèm vyolans ak aktivite gang nan zòn Bon Repos, nou deside pou nou deplase Campus la nan Nò zòn Cap Haitian. Manb staf Bury Ephesien ak Francillon Jean Enock te voyaje nan Nò pou al chache posibilite campus pou nou - Nou ap eksplore kay ki ta ka pèmèt nou gen klas yo, ak biwo yo, ak etidyan ki ap viv nan kominote a olye nan campus la.
Nou espere sesyon ki ap vini an se denyè nou ap genyen an liy. Lè nou deplase pou ale Cap Haitian nou ap gen 2 opsyon: Nou ap gen etidyan nan Campus la; epi nou a gen opsyon ibrid (sa vle di w ap ka swiv an liy oswa nan klas) pou etidyan ki p ap viv nan Campus la oswa ki ap travay epi ki vle fè pati FTSJS. Lè nou pran yon desizyon nou pral pataje tout detay ak nou.
In light of the violence and gang activities in the Bon Repos area, we have decided to move our campus north to the Cap Haitien area. Staff members Bury Ephesien and Francillon Jean Enock have traveled north to look at campus possibilities for us- We are exploring primarily buildings that would allow us to have classes and offices, with students living in the wider community rather than “on campus.
We are hopeful that this upcoming semester will be our last fully online. Once we move to Cap Haitien we are anticipating two options: students who are on campus; and a hybrid option for students that do not live close or are working and want to attend FTSJS. Once we make a decision, we will share all the details!

The College of Social Work and Social Justice (FTSJS) emerged from a non-accredited, independent social work college, Enstiti Travay Sosyal ak Syans Sosya; (ETS), first established in Haiti in 2012, which utilized an idealistic and exciting set of academic offerings and an eclectic and wide-ranging teacher base. Volunteer Instructors from abroad and Haiti came and worked in different ways (brief onsite intensive and distance learning approaches, for example) with Haitian undergraduates.
With a change in leadership and the establishment of an affiliation with Université Episcopale d’Haiti (UNEPH) in the fall of 2018, FTSJS is now a school that maintains an innovative approach to teaching and learning while offering accreditation and a more structured curriculum.
The affiliation with UNEPH provides an academic liaison with a long- established and renowned Haitian university. Founded in 1920, the main branch of the university is located in downtown Port-au-Prince, with eight active “faculté” divisions (of which FTSJS Is the most recent), and three off site campus locations: sites in Leogane for the schools of Nursing and Rehabilitation Science; Les Cayes for Business technology; and Bon Repos for Social Work.
The university is highly regarded, highly selective of its student body and extremely aware of its role in Haiti as provider of quality, diverse undergraduate and graduate programs. It is based on provisions of: 1) solid, traditional academic teaching with a French language focus; 2) Research, and 3) Community Service. FTSJS is proud to be affiliated with UNEPH , while maintaining its autonomous fiscal and programmatic oversight.
