Bai Xian | Building Bridges Across Cultures
Bai Xian Asia Institute (BXAI) implements the Asian Future Leaders Scholarship Program in partnership with top universities in Asia.
Coffee & Chat with BX People provides a platform for dialogue that encourages Bai Xian Scholars to connect with their seniors. But what exactly do they talk about? Let us take a moment to listen to what they shared last year about “What I wish I had known in my 20s”…
Every year in August, BXAI Alumni Evening allows Bai Xian Scholars across cohorts to engage with each other and the wider Bai Xian Community. Let us recapture here some of the corridor moments we shared at Hitotsubashi ICS last year!

Throwback to Sunday, May 24! The BXAI Beijing Alumni Chapter headed over to Shucun Park in Haidian for their Volunteer Day.🌱
The team kicked off the afternoon with a game of Frisbee, then followed by a park clean-up, picking up litter to make our earth fresh and green again!🌍
Huge thanks to Yamamoto Seita and Mengshi He for organizing the event, and to everyone, who came to help! Catch up with you all next time!✨
👤 YU, Jilin (Bai Xian Scholar, 2024 Cohort)
As a computer science graduate, Jerry brought with him a thoughtful and logical lens on his visit to the nursing home. He took time to observe quietly the subtle dynamics inside the tiny living room. He wanted to know what made the volunteers tick, what gave care workers the motivation to handle their workload nimbly on their feet. Then, the sudden awareness of a human condition dawned on him—that people need missions, that we all need missions to keep us moving forward in life.
👤 LIM, Portia Pei Shi (Bai Xian Scholar, 2024 Cohort)
As a second-generation Malaysian Chinese scholar, Portia thought she knew this fast-paced city. But stepping out of the classroom into the jungle, she was presented with a completely new and different perspective on Hong Kong. From volunteers performing for immobile seniors to caregivers going the extra mile beyond their daily duties—it’s a side of the city that easily gets overlooked amidst the mad rush of life.
Theme in Action – Aging in Society | EP2: Aging at a Different Pace
💬 What may your daily life look like when you can no longer move around freely?🏥 When we are young and nimble, we rarely think about a stage of life when basic mobility becomes a challenge—even using the bathroom requires the presence and assistance of another person.🧓🏼
In this short film, Aging at a Different Pace, produced by BXAI, our Bai Xian Scholars Jerry Yu and Portia Lim visit City Nursing Centre, a private care home located in North Point, Hong Kong. While observing life contained within just a few dozen square feet, Jerry met Mr. Cheung, a full-time staff, who shared with him the busy daily routines required for caregivers to look after high-dependence seniors. At the end of the film, you will also catch glimpses of our scholars engaged in an indoors baseball lesson taught by active seniors, who swing bats with confidence—aging is happening to all of us, but we can all stay active and connected in our own way and at our own pace, regardless.
We hope this video will get you started on visualising aging, not just for yourself, but also for your neighbours in your own community.

Theme in Action – Aging in Society | EP1: The Rhythm of Independence
💬 What do you know about aging? Are you scared of getting old? Most of us treat aging like it’s a lifetime away. We rarely stop to think…what life may be like when the whole community around us gets older than 75?👵🏼
In this short film, EP1: The Rhythm of Independence, produced by BXAI, our Bai Xian Scholar Portia Lim from the 2024 Cohort heads out to a public housing estate in Kwun Tong, Hong Kong, to visit MayMay, an 85-year-old senior living on her own. It’s a step away from all the classroom theories about an aging society, and a chance to just sit down and listen to MayMay’s real-life stories and immerse in her daily routine. Watch it to enjoy the intimate, honest conversation, and to understand aging better at a more personal level.
We hope this video will get you started on visualising aging, not just for yourself, but also for your neighbours in your own community.
