Perhaps our most far-flung grantee is the University of Guam, which is undertaking a two-year project to process and make accessible the Richard F. Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center Manuscripts Collection, including basic processing of 60 collections and enhanced description of finding aids for 150 collections. These collections comprise the premier holdings of materials related to the United States territory of Guam, the Marianas Islands, and the Pacific region of Micronesia.
Founded in 1952 and centrally located on the island in the town of Mangilao, the University of Guam functions as the major U.S. higher learning institution in the Western Pacific. The Richard Flores Taitano Micronesian Area Research Center opened in 1967. The manuscripts collection contains personal papers of the governor of Guam, from the early governors of the American Naval period (1898-1950), the civilian governors appointed after 1950, delegates to the U.S. Congress, and field notes from archaeologists, anthropologists, ethnographers, and other historical reports.
Among the collections are:
- W. W. Bradley Jr. Papers, 1898-1954, 3 linear feet. A naval governor, Bradley advocated granting civil rights to the local Chamarros and Guamanians and introduced free elections. This collection consists of correspondence, speeches, reports, and photographs.
- M.F.L. Guerrero Papers, 1948-1969, 13 linear feet. The second Chamarro governor of Guam, Guerrero steered the island people through recovery in the wake of its devastating Typhoon Karen. This collection contains correspondence, press releases, dispatches, speeches, and photographs.
- R.J. Bordallo Papers, 1960-1986, 212 linear feet. Bordallo was a senator in the Guam legislature in 1950s and 1960s and then Governor of Guam from 1974-1978. This collection has correspondence, press releases, speeches, Executive orders, and daily schedules.
- A.B. Won Pat Papers, 1965-1984, 285 linear feet. Won Pat was Guam’s “Washington representative,” 1965-1972 and Guam’s first delegate to Congress, 1972-1984.
- Jane H. Underwood Papers, 1963-1968, 57 linear feet. Professor and anthropologist Jane Underwood was an authority on the Chamorro and other indigenous people in Micronesia. Her papers contain her field notes, population research files, and survey files, among other research files.
