It’s a wrap! Graduation ceremony for the beneficiaries of the Vocational and Skills Training Project in Kiang, Kwinella.

Six months ago, Starfish International, in partnership with the International Trade Centre, launched a vocational and skills learning project which was geared towards nurturing the entrepreneurship skills of youth in Kiang, Kwinella. Six months later, the project has touched the lives of 32 young women and 3 young men who are now experts in Soapmaking, Batik, and Tie and Dyeing.

The project has made a historic impact in profound and myriad ways. These youth didn’t only experience entrepreneurship training in the last 6 months of this project, but they were also exposed to Basic English and Mathematics classes (literacy and numeracy classes), Basic Business Practices, Public Speaking lessons and performing arts activities like Poetry, documenting their folklores and Acting and Drama. It melted our hearts to see these youth recite their powerful poems and introduce themselves in the English Language, the current language of business, even though they have never been to school. We couldn’t be prouder! If this was all done in 6 months, imagine what these youth can do in a year or more!

The graduation was celebrated with lots of excitement, enthusiasm, and vibrance. From the beautiful performances, to the beautiful products that were made and displayed, from the inspiring speeches to the inspiring true-life stories that were narrated, every segment was simply exceptional! Just like one of their poems said, “I am the dream and the hope. I will rise”. We have witnessed these youth rise, and neither early marriage, nor teenage pregnancy, can stop them. The even better news is that this project is here to stay. We are going to start a “kafo”/ women's cooperative, to continue financially uplifting them, checking in with them, and mentoring these youth just like the Starfish Chapter Programs do.

We are sincerely grateful to our partners, to the International Trade Center (ITC) for their support throughout the training, and especially to Mr. Baboucarr Sallah and Ms. Yassin G*i. We hope to work with you some more for the development of our nation. We also would like to say a big thank you to the Alkalo, Seyfo, Elders, Aunty Kumba Daffeh-Kah Tresor, and all the good people of Kiang Kwinella for their hospitality, kindness, and for gracing the graduation ceremony with us. Similarly to the Mansakonko Area Council, Chairman Landing Sanneh, and everyone who has been with us since day one to graduation, we are grateful.
Also, extending our gratitude to Aunty Fatou Saine Gaye of Gaye Njorro Skills Academy, Uncle Malang Sambou of Mbolo Association, and Uncle Poncelet Ileleji of Jokkolabs Banjul for their guidance and support.

To the beneficiaries, we have become family. We are proud of you all. We love you all, and we will always be here for you all.

Finally, we can’t forget to thank the engines of this project, the Starfish Mentors who sacrificed their every weekend in the last six months just to make sure this project is a success. Thank you for your sweat, blood, and tears! Thank you for flying our Starfish Service Flag higher.

P.S. Notice the number of pregnant women in the program. We are grateful that they not only have a map of their road to better financial health but better holistic health as well. #GambianWomensLivesMatter
I was invited to attend the 12th graduation ceremony of Gaye Njorro Skills Academy last week. Skills development is one of the major requisites needed to move our country forward. An empowered youth is an empowered society; and this is what Gaye Njorro is working towards achieving for our communities. I’m proud to be associated with this noble initiative. The Academy offers various skills development for the youth of our communities.

During the course of our entrepreneurship training, we had the honour of receiving two guest trainers , Mr Amadou Tambedou, the Director of Second Home Foundation and Mr Ousainou Saine from one of our partner institutions; Gaye Njorro Skills Academy

These two men with their great experiences in areas of youth development were able to engage the trainees on so many levels of personal and entrepreneurial development skills.

Mr Saine with his knowledge in kickstarting young entrepreneurs and businesses gave them a powerful opening session where they learned the basics of starting a new business using the international Business Model Canvas to define the basic structures and needs of their future businesses.

Mr Tambedou on the other hand had a one on one with the trainees and most of them opened up about their inspirations and what keeps them motivated as well experienced bike mechanics and young entrepreneurs.

We believe most of these young people already have the skills and willpower, all they need to know now is how to materialize their ideas and turn the skill into a livelihood.
