PRESIDENT DARBOE??? UDP Leader Projected to Become The Gambia’s Next President

With less than a day until the December 4 elections, it appears that 73 year old ANM Ousainou Darboe of the United Democratic Party (UDP) is poised to become the next president of the republic of The Gambia. This is according to our online polls conducted in November and shows the UDP leader winning 44% of the vote, beating his next closest rival, Halifa Sallah of the People’s Democratic Organization for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS), by a whopping 19 points. Mr. Sallah, with 25%, is closely followed by incumbent President Adama Barrow of the National People’s Party (NPP) who is favoured by 20% of respondents. Independent candidate Essa Faal is in 4th place with 7% and at the bottom of the pack are Mama Kandeh of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC) and Abdoulie Jammeh of the National Unity Party (NUP) at 3% and 1% respectively.

We used different tools and platforms to analyse the data coming in. If the support for the UDP (Ousainou Darboe) shown in polls and other research is converted to votes on December 4th. He will be elected as the next president. This election will be one of the most unpredictable elections in the history of The Gambia. Do not write off the other 5 candidates with the exception of Abdoulie Jammeh (NUP) as our polls and all other research indicates he will end up in the 6th position.

The poll was conducted online by Gambia Election, a market research group primarily using online panels to provide research for elections in The Gambia. Over 30,000 votes registered over 3 weeks.

Please note that this is just an opinion poll and may or may not be what the election outcome is. We will find out on December 4th if the polls were right.

CANDIDATE PARTY % Possible Positions
Ousainou Darboe UDP 44 - 1,2
Halifa Sallah PDOIS 25 - 1,2,3,4
Adama Barrow NPP 20 - 1,2,3
Essa Faal Independent 7 - 1,2,3,4
Mama Kandeh GDC 3 - 1,2,3,4,5
Abdoulie Jammeh NUP 1 - 6

This poll was restricted to only respondents in The Gambia and only asked which candidate respondents would vote for in the upcoming December 4th elections. Each electronic device was also restricted to only one vote.

Limitations of the Poll

Because the poll was conducted only electronically via social media, the respondents largely comprise the young and educated people who are both more likely to use social media and have access to it. The methodology makes it less likely to cover other demographics such as older people and those with little or no education who may not be able to use a computer or have access to social media. Because it was shared by individuals rather than pollsters reaching out to individuals, one cannot rely much on the randomness so much because individuals are more likely to share it only with their circle who support the same party as them.
The poll also does not cover what part of the country respondents are located in, and it’s noteworthy that people in the urban areas have more access to social media than those in the rural areas of the country.
Another significant limitation is that while it’s restricted to only those that resident in The Gambia, the poll does not ask whether respondents have a voter’s card to vote in the upcoming elections. Therefore, respondents may or may not be eligible to vote.
