Update from #EPIC about the Sandy Island Oyster Bay Marine Protected Area (MPA) located in Carriacou.

Marine Protection Areas (MPAs) are super crucial to the conservation and protection of ecosystems and the biodiversity they hold. MPAs are designated areas of land/sea 🌊⛰🏝set apart for the conservation of the plant and animal life found within them.
🌳🌲🌴🦜🐳🐢🦅🐡🦚🐿🕊🦜

R2RGrenada seeks to support the development and management of various MPAs and TPAs here in Grenada 🇬🇩.

What an incredible day in the Sandy Island/Oyster Bed Marine Protected Area for seabirds. The whole MPA was filled with Brown Bo***es, Magnificent Frigatebirds, Lauhing Gulls, Roseate Terns, Brown Noddies and Bridled Terns. Many of the nesting birds now have small chicks, and are out accompanying with their newborns. Amazingly, we counted 72 Brown Pelicans in the SIOBMPA today, mostly juvenile. Seabirds are an important indicator of ocean health, and MPA success.

An awesome demonstration of the role Mangroves play in protecting our shorelines from storm surges, high tides and hurricane winds.

But many of the mangrove ecosystems around the world are threatened because of the various human activities that occur higher up stream that result in waste such as sewage, oil, pesticides, herbicides, plastics etc being carried downstream.

We need to take care of our environment; practicing responsible lifestyles that protect and conserve all our ecosystems from Ridge to Reef.
