The West Midlands Teacher Network Meeting - 5th July 2017 Where? - University of Wolverhampton, Walsall Campus
WS1 3BD, in Room WN205.
Time? - 2pm - 5pm (buffet lunch available from 1.30pm)
Title: Problem Solving and Modelling in the new Mathematics A Levels.
Presenter: Richard Lissaman
What it's about? -
Modelling is about starting with a real life situation, making assumptions to simplify it and deciding what features are important in order that mathematics can be applied to provide some useful information.
Problem-solving is about working through situations which are not immediately recognisable as a version of a scenario already familiar to you. Both of these skills can be challenging for students. Supporting students to develop these skills can also be challenging. This session will consider some practical approaches for this and hopefully provide ideas to take back to the classroom.
