A spot of canal side B&W photography this morning. The poor ducks were having a meeting - presumably about how they were going make it into the warm without getting caught up in the trolly that’s been thrown in the canal :( one mans junk is another mans art, but poor little duckies :(

Vincent - Don McLean [Official Video] 30/07/2020

Vincent - Don McLean [Official Video]

Don McLean wrote a beautiful song in 1971, simply titled, Vincent. If I listen to the words closely, I cry each and every time; that's when you know something has been so honestly written.

"In the autumn of 1970 I had a job singing in the school system, playing my guitar in classrooms. I was sitting on the veranda one morning, reading a biography of Van Gogh, and suddenly I knew I had to write a song arguing that he wasn't crazy. He had an illness and so did his brother Theo. This makes it different, in my mind, to the garden variety of 'crazy' – because he was rejected by a woman [as was commonly thought]. So I sat down with a print of Starry Night and wrote the lyrics out on a paper bag." - Don McLean on the genesis of the song.

Starry, starry night
Paint your palette blue and grey
Look out on a summer's day
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul
Shadows on the hills
Sketch the trees and the daffodils
Catch the breeze and the winter chills
In colors on the snowy linen land

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

Starry, starry night
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze
Swirling clouds in violet haze
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue
Colors changing hue
Morning fields of amber grain
Weathered faces lined in pain
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand

Now I understand
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they did not know how
Perhaps they'll listen now

For they could not love you
But still your love was true
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night
You took your life, as lovers often do
But I could have told you, Vincent
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you

Starry, starry night
Portraits hung in empty halls
Frameless heads on nameless walls
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget
Like the strangers that you've met
The ragged men in the ragged clothes
The silver thorn, a bloody rose
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow

Now I think I know
What you tried to say to me
And how you suffered for your sanity
And how you tried to set them free
They would not listen, they're not listening still
Perhaps they never will

It has been 130 years today since Vincent van Gogh said breathed his last breath, and spoke his last words.

Days later, Vincent's brother, Theo, wrote a letter to their mother; his letter including the following paragraph:

"Dr. Gachet and the other doctor were exemplary and have looked after him well, but they realized from the first moment that there was nothing one could do. Vincent said “I would like to go like this,” and half an hour later he had his wish. Life weighed so heavily upon him, but as happens so often everyone is now full of praise, also for his talent."

Theo also wrote a letter to their sister Lies, which said:

"He himself wanted to die, when I sat at his bedside and said that we would try to get him better and that we hoped that he would then be spared this kind of despair, he said, “La tristesse durera toujours” [The sadness will last forever]. I understood what he wanted to say with those words."

I watched the Van Gogh Museum pay tribute to Vincent this morning, laying a bed of Sunflowers on his grave, and also on the grave of his brother Theo, who lays next to him.

Rest in Peace Vincent.

Blog - All Things Van Gogh — CBW Fine Art & Illustrations

I recently wrote a blog about my Vincent van Gogh experiences this year, as there have been many; the highlight of course travelling to Amsterdam to visit the Van Gogh Museum.

You can read my blog on my website, but please note, all views and opinions are my own. Enjoy....

Blog - All Things Van Gogh — CBW Fine Art & Illustrations I’m so glad that Claire and I decided to go to Amsterdam when we did; any later, lockdown would’ve seen to it that we couldn’t go; it was the last of my visits to ‘all things Van Gogh’ for the time being. Vincent van Gogh was an artist that I have loved throughout my adult life, not becaus...

Sunday 27 July 1890, Auvers-sur-Oise - Vincent left the inn after breakfast, and did not return until probably around 9pm... holding his stomach. He later told the inn-keeper "I tried to kill myself". Vincent admitted that he had set out for the wheat field where he had recently been painting, and during the afternoon, had shot himself with a revolver and passed out. Once he came to, later that evening, he tried to find the revolver to finish his fate, only to not be able to find it, and returned to the inn.

There has been much speculation about whether or not Vincent did in fact try to take his own life, although this is the favourable version of events, given that his mental health was so unpredictable following his stint at the asylum, and having had spoken many times about not seeing a bright future.

However, there is also a version that suggests that two young men (or boys), fired the revolver and ran away, leaving Vincent to seek refuge alone. It is suggested that Vincent 'covered' for them, so not to ruin more lives than necessary, knowing his wound was fatal.

What really happened we will never know, not really; only Vincent and possibly those two young men know what actually happened, 130 years ago today.

Photos from CBW Fine Art & Illustrations's post 26/07/2020

The final week of July 2020 marks 130 years since the most heart-breaking tragedy in art history.

Vincent van Gogh was a troubled soul, who sadly, was seen only as a nuisance and a mad-man during his time in this world. Had Vincent been around today, he may have been diagnosed with bipolar, and would almost certainly have been classified as suffering from alcoholism, which I have no doubt, was something that developed through his daily attempt to block out the anguish.

I want to dedicate this week to Vincent, who died from (allegedly) a self-inflicted gunshot wound on 29 July 1890.

To commemorate Vincent, I have created my Van Gogh 2000 Collection; I actually created this artwork in 2000 whilst studying A 'Level Art at school. Using block printing, each layer was carved by hand, and I used several different bright colours as a nod to Vincent's passion for the use of bold colour.

I hope you like the artwork; this piece means so so much to me; rest in peace Vincent xx

My friend Laura has made a very valuable point on Facebook this morning; it’s so important that people are mindful of those who are deaf or hard of hearing, so I thought I would share her message.

“I’d just like to remind people that there are a lot of deaf, or hard of hearing people out there, so be kind - they may not hear you at all as they rely on lip reading - sounds get very muffled in masks!”
