What a lovely way to end the week - with a super positive and enthusiastic year one pupil!

In maths we explored number bonds - ways to make ten - using Numicon, cubes and counters.

We shared a reading book together, focusing on reading and spelling words with two consonants together, eg gran and tent. We chatted about the story.

Finally we worked on fine motor skills - tracing, cutting, finger gym - to help with handwriting and letter formation.

Well done, fabulous learning today!

In a Year 1 English session we enjoyed sharing the story 'Ducks on trucks'.

We practised reading words with adjacent consonants, eg 'crash' and 'trucks'. We identified rhyming words, eg 'drop' and 'flop'. We tried to read the spoken words and speech bubbles in voices to match the characters!

We talked about what was wrong with Splash Pond at the beginning of the story and spotted all the ways in which the pond had changed by the end of the story

We know it can be hard to talk to children about feelings of grief and loss, but books could help you start these conversations.

Here are some you could try:

In a maths session we recapped our number bonds of 10 using Numicon and then made the connection between number bonds of 10 and number bonds of 100. For example, 2+8=10 so 20+80=100. We finished off with a game of number bonds bingo. Fantastic work.

Make conker animals! πŸŒ°πŸ‚

This was our attempt at a camel and a horse 😊

You just need conkers, some twigs and a skewer to make holes in the conkers with. If you makes holes in the conkers while they are still fresh, it’s a lot easier.

We enjoyed using these colourful beads in a Reception session today. We looked carefully at the different patterns and colours and sorted them into groups. We counted how many were in each group, matched them up with the correct numeral - and we compared 'more' and 'less'.

24/08/2022

A fun craft to do with the kids...Pick a flower or plant and lay on top of a small piece of clay and use a rolling pin to make an imprint in the clay. let it harden. Paint. Add a magnet to the back. See how many prints you can make...

We worked on fine motor skills and handwriting. My pupil placed colourful beads onto the rainbow, practising finger muscle control - and working with such care and precision. Well done.

13/08/2022

In a maths session we worked on counting in groups of 5, 2 and 10 - and then on recalling our 5, 2 and 10 times table facts. Fantastic effort, well done!

It's been lovely meeting several new families this week - with one more to come on Monday. I am really enjoying working with your children over the summer holidays and they're all doing so well; revisiting key skills, moving forward with their learning and preparing to get off to a strong, confident start in their new year groups in September.
I am now full for summer holiday tutoring but don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to be added to my waiting list - for regular term time sessions or for future school holidays.

We had a super English session. Our phonics focus was revisiting the phase 5 digraphs and trigraphs, then applying this knowledge to read and spell words.

Tricky Word Penalty Shoot Out ⚽

Keep your milk carton lids as they are great to use in a finger football penalty shoot out.

I used some Duplo as a goal, stuck some stickers on the lids and wrote on the Phase 2 tricky words. Adapt what you write on the lids to suit the phase your child is working. I also used a sticker as the penalty spot.

A simple game to play. Your child reads the word on the lid and then tries to flick the lid into the goal. Perfect to give exposure to those tricky words and build fine motor skills at the same time. Win Win πŸ‘πŸ»

Happy summer holidays to all my pupils - you have worked so hard and I have loved seeing all the wonderful progress you have made this year.

Looking forward to seeing many of you for holiday sessions later on in August and then all of you back for the new term in September.

In the meantime Archie cat is enjoying relaxing in his deck chair!

In a maths session we worked on recalling number bonds of ten. We played 'how many in the box?' - counting how many buttons were placed on the table and reasoning how many must be hidden inside the box. We then checked to see if we were correct!

We enjoyed sharing this story, working on both phonics and reading comprehension.

We learnt that consonant sounds can be written in different ways, eg c can give a 's' sound. We practised our phonemes kn, ea, wh, ay and sh. We practised our common exception words, including 'because', 'many' and 'hours'.

We discussed new vocabulary like 'commitment', 'allergic' and 'exceedingly'. We enjoyed looking at the pictures and talking about them. We tried to use different voices for each character and to express feelings through our tone.

We discussed, for example,
'What do you think pet means in the title? Can you pet a plant? How?'
'Who is the narrator in this story?'
'Why isn't Grace interested in cuddly toys?'
'What might Grace like about each plant and why has she chosen each name?'
'Why does Grace tell Ollie not to pet her plants?'
'Do you think this story has a happy ending? Why?'
