Never give up on piano lessons

Building up to Christmas. Will be staying in the Dumfries area for good. Love the area and the people.

A busy term with a lot of Adult learners. Some have been with me for years and others are new . Some beginners and others returning to piano lessons after having received lessons as children. It always amazes me how soon people are able to pick it up again.

We learn a variety of styles and I always encourage pupils to try different styles and then move to help them in the music they love.

I have spaces available for the new year. If you are interested in lessons for yourself or know someone who may appreciate some lessons as a Christmas present I have Gift Vouchers available.

Online lessons ?
Not sure what to expect ? Try a free taster and you will find it does work 🎹🎶🎹

The new term will be starting from the 12th September. I have a few spaces for online lessons, adults or children. Contact me for more details.🎹🎶

Congratulations to Michael for getting a Distinction for Grade 1 Piano. Also to Lotti with a high Merit for her Grade 5. All lessons have been on line proving it is possible to achieve good results this way.

Never moan again about reading 2 hands of music, !! Who would like reading and playing this ??!!

So many people contact me and ask “how do on line lessons work ? “ , Then are not sure if it is for them. The picture of me shows the view you see when taking lessons. You can see and talk to me , see my hands on the keyboard as well as my posture. All of this is important and I need to see you in the same way.
I use a laptop, separate camera (which is not necessary for the pupil )which I can change the view you see of my hands. All you need is a laptop or iPad/tablet, able to prop it up to see the same angle as you see me. An ironing board is an excellent height or a stand for laptop or iPad is fairly inexpensive and lets you alter the angle. I am not so keen on you using a phone as the screen is rather too small to see what I am doing.
I also purchase any copies of music you are using so we work from the same copy.
A lot of my pupils learn for fun or take exams if they so wish. I also give theory tuition up to Grade 5. I have a 100% success rate with exams and my pupils have been with me many years.
The main aim is to enjoy learning. There is no pressure, learn at your own pace and above all have fun. My pupils range from 6 to 70 +, all abilities.

If you would like to experience a taster session just get in touch.
I am a travelling piano teacher, hence being in my caravan. Lessons on the move are no problem !!

This is so true.

So true! 🙌

Happy Star Wars Day!

I keep seeing these adverts which promise you can play the piano in a matter of weeks. Yes, ok , so why do I need a teacher if I can do this ?

The one thing these courses do not teach you is how to play safely and correctly. I have several pupils who have started this way and once we start proper lessons these are the things I have to correct.

Posture. Yes, this is important. If you are slouching or not sitting correctly this gives problems with the back and neck .

Incorrect hand position. If your wrists are too low or high this causes tension and leads to the all too common problem of tendinitis and carpal tunnel issues. Not something to be experienced as I well know.

Over curved on too straight fingers which causes tension not allowing freedom in playing and something which is difficult to

All of these are not only dangerous but also affect how you play.

I also find there is no importance given to using correct fi*****ng, understanding of how to play rhythmically and fully interpreting the information on the page.

There is nothing that can replace a teacher who can correct these before they become a problem. Even though my lessons are all on line I can see what is happening and guide you safely to be able to enjoy your playing for many years to come. No video lessons can actually see how you play or hear how you play. This is why there is so much more to gain from having an experienced teacher to start you on the right path.

Felix Mendelssohn.

Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (3 February 1809 – 4 November 1847), born and widely known as Felix Mendelssohn,[n 2] was a German composer, pianist, organist and conductor of the early Romantic period. Mendelssohn's compositions include symphonies, concertos, piano music, organ music and chamber music. His best-known works include the overture and incidental music for A Midsummer Night's Dream (which includes his "Wedding March"), the Italian Symphony, the Scottish Symphony, the oratorio St. Paul, the oratorio Elijah, the overture The Hebrides, the mature Violin Concerto and the String Octet. The melody for the Christmas carol "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is also his. Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words are his most famous solo piano compositions.

Mendelssohn's grandfather was the renowned Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, but Felix was initially raised without religion. He was baptised at the age of seven, becoming a Reformed Christian. He was recognised early as a musical prodigy, but his parents were cautious and did not seek to capitalise on his talent. His sister F***y Mendelssohn received a similar musical education and was a talented composer and pianist in her own right; some of her early songs were published under her brother's name and her Easter Sonata was for a time mistakenly attributed to him after being lost and rediscovered in the 1970s.

Mendelssohn enjoyed early success in Germany, and revived interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach, notably with his performance of the St Matthew Passion in 1829. He became well received in his travels throughout Europe as a composer, conductor and soloist; his ten visits to Britain – during which many of his major works were premiered – form an important part of his adult career. His essentially conservative musical tastes set him apart from more adventurous musical contemporaries such as Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner, Charles-Valentin Alkan and Hector Berlioz. The Leipzig Conservatory,[n 3] which he founded, became a bastion of this anti-radical outlook. After a long period of relative denigration due to changing musical tastes and antisemitism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, his creative originality has been re-evaluated. He is now among the most popular composers of the Romantic era.

Happy Birthday to Joseph Haydn. 🎶🎂

Franz Joseph Haydn (31 March 1732 – 31 May 1809) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He was instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet".

Portrait of Haydn by Thomas Hardy (1791)
Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Esterházy family at their Eszterháza Castle. Until the later part of his life, this isolated him from other composers and trends in music so that he was, as he put it, "forced to become original". Yet his music circulated widely, and for much of his career he was the most celebrated composer in Europe.

He was a friend and mentor of Mozart, a tutor of Beethoven, and the elder brother of composer Michael Haydn.

Happy World Piano Day. 🎹🎶❤️

Piano Day is held on the 88th day of the year (March 29th in normal years and March 28th in leap years) in celebration of and reference to the 88 keys on a standard piano. From an idea by the German pianist and composer Nils Frahm in 2015 "because it doesn’t hurt to celebrate the piano and everything around it: performers, composers, piano builders, tuners, movers and most important, the listener", the event has grown in subsequent years with amateur and commercial success.

The Power of Music.....thanks to Cover Band Central for sharing.....♫

Why does everyone assume on line lessons are so different to face to face ? I teach on line, my pupils are one side of the computer screen and I am the other. We can both see each other, a view of hands and sitting position and I have a camera I can move to demonstrate different angles to help you see what I mean. These are not video lessons but live . You have the chance to play your own instrument, no travelling or wondering where to park . I can offer flexible times so if something happens you can't attend the lesson it can easily be rearranged or carried to the following week.
The people who have tried this way with me have all continued.
Don't be put off. At least have a trial lesson.

The biggest mistake people make when learning music is to practice too fast. No way should you start a piece at the speed you know it should go. Careful slow practice in sections will enable you to reach your goal much faster.

Respect Musicians. 🎶🙏
