Watford Angling Coaches

Professional Angling Tuition Watford Angling Coaches (W.A.C.) was formed by a group of fishing pals.

Whilst we enjoyed our fishing trips together, we also shared an enjoyment in passing on our angling skills and knowledge to others. We therefore decided to undertake the coaching examinations through the Angling Development Board and subsequently qualified as Angling Coaches in both Level 1 and Level 2 standard. As a group, our aim is to not only introduce new people into the sport, but also help existing Anglers to develop their skills and achieve their ambitions.

Operating as usual

The WAC team are all here today for the last of the 2022 Cassiobury Farm and Fishery open days. Carpdell fishery looking glorious in the sunshine perfect bank holiday familyboutsing, hope to see you here!

Half way through this weekends taster sessions at Cassiobury Farm and Fishery open weekend. Took the opportunity to fish Carpdell fishery overnight which proved successful with Paul Forman capturing a brace of carp.

Today will be the last open day of this year, and looks like it’s going to be a busy one, let’s do this!

Lovely to meet Finn who was coached by Paul Forman for a 2 hour session yesterday evening. Whilst he had been sea fishing before, this was his first coarse fishing session, things couldnt have gone better as he landed in excess of 100lb of Fish including Bream, Common Carp, Perch, Skimmer Bream, Mirror Carp and Roach! Great student and a great session!

Our sincere thanks to Harefield Tackle, who are supporting the work we do, as part of a new initiative, Finn was the first recipient of our Harefield Tackle discount vouchers. A great idea, which gives budding new anglers access to their expert advise and a bargain price for the start of their angling journey! All those attending our angling sessions will be able to benefit from this discount scheme including those attending our taster sessions as part of this weekends Cassiobury Farm and Fishery open days.

Paul Forman had a great 2 hour fishing session with Theo and his family this morning. Theo was ultra keen and for someone be who has never fished before showed a great natural talent. Within the first hour he was telling Paul when and why he wanted to apply bait, what bait he wanted and what signs he was looking for! His efforts were rewarded with numerous Perch, skimmer bream and Carp. Well done Theo and thank you for a really enjoyable morning.

WAC Coach Tony Forman kept us his run of success at Carpdell fishery this week, after Landing Scar at 31lb on the Saturday he put this cracking Mid 20 original safely into the net the following night!

We are now half way through the summer open days at Cassiobury Farm and Fishery with events held on both the 24th July and 7th August. We have undertaken 30 minute taster sessions for over 120 individual participants; so the numbers have been great, the weather has been exceptional and the fish have been keen to put in an appearance, we cant ask for any more than that!

Whilst Paul Forman and Ross Andrew Forman have been running the bookings and enquiries at the desk, the business end has been delivered by our trusted coaches of Andrew Clark , Alan Colclough , Tony Forman and Del Greening. These guys have been their usual awesome selves with infectious enthusiasm and the determination to ensure that all participants learn as much as possible and catch!

Looking forward now to the final "Big Weekend" with open days on 27th & 28th August. Taster sessions are only available to open day entrants, check out www.cassioburyfarm.co.uk for their ticket information. To book your fishing taster session, please come to the Angling Desk

We advise that you book early on the day as spaces are limited as we will only have a coach teach a maximum of 2 students at a time, but that is to make sure you enjoy and learn.

All ready for the Cassiobury Farm and Fishery open day today where we will be offering our usual 30 minute taster sessions. We set the coaching stations up last night so squeezed in a quick overnighter on Carpdell fishery. Certainly a busy night with Tony catching a 31lb mirror known as scar and Paul Forman banking 4 carp. Let’s hope todays sessions go as well as last night!

Great 2 hour session with Jazz today, his concentration paid off as he landed Bream, Carp , Skimmers, Perch and Roach. He is rapidly becoming a very competent young angler

The Easter weekend saw the first of our 2022 taster sessions at the Cassiobury Farm and Fishery open days.

Just over 100 particupants joined us in the sun for at least one 30 minute session and was great to catch up with those who have joined us before as well as introducing plenty more budding anglers.

Looking forward to our first taster sessions of the year this Easter Sunday & Monday.

For visitors to the Cassiobury Farm and Fishery open days we will be offering 30 minute taster sessions with one of our qualified coaches.

If you are attending, then please remember to visit the angling desk to secure your slot as these sessions are a popular attraction.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Great to have new students in both Key Stage 3 & 4 groups joining us over recent weeks. The weather has certainly thrown a few "challenges" but we have kept the catches coming, fishing in small streams and even holes in the ice where necessary! Hats off to the students who have braved the weather and worked hard for their rewards!

Photos from Watford Angling Coaches's post 24/12/2021

Well our last session of 2021 now completed, only leaves us to wish everyone our best wishes for Christmas and the New Year. Few more students hoping us in January so let’s hope the waters stay ice free for a while yet.

Paul Forman was back on the bank today with the dynamic duo aka Jazz and Fallon! The enthusiasm of these two budding young anglers is infectious and was great to see them working their way though some cracking captures of carp, bream perch and skimmers, well done to them both and looking forward to our next trip.

Great session with Mitchell today as he continues with his NOCN Angling Skills course. Classroom session on Angling Regulations and then it was time to get the lure rods out. Jigs and plugs were used today and in just over 2 hours, 9 Pike and and a cracking old Perch graced the bank, fantastic stuff!

Hats off to Mitchell who is showing great skill in how to work the plugs and jigs and also handle the Pike with confidence.

Couple of sessions over the half term break; George came down for his second session and things are really starting to click for him, plenty of fish caught and he is becoming very independent in his angling which is great to see.

Oscar also paid a visit, he had tried angling on one of our taster sessions before the Covid lockdown, finally managed to get back and spend a few hours with Paul. This lad is a natural, picking up the basics really well and was soon casting, playing and unhooking fish on his own.

Sure we will be seeing them both again as they continue with their angling adventures.

Photos from Watford Angling Coaches's post 23/10/2021

Jazz and Fallon returned for their second session with Paul Forman today. Both are showing great signs of developing their angling skills as they each caught, unhooked and returned a healthy number of carp, Perch and Roach. Looking forward to their next visit.

Photos from Watford Angling Coaches's post 02/10/2021

Great to be working with Mitchell again, as he is now in KS4 he is taking our new NOCN "One Awards" course. He has started with the Angling Skills module and will then move on to The Angling Environment. Things are going well so far and he will be sitting the Level 2 versions of both modules.

Theo was unable to get a slot at one of our recent taster sessions as we were fully booked, but his dad made arrangements for him to come down for a 1 hour session to catch his first fish. He certainly did that, in fact we lost count! He worked the swim till the very end, catching his largest fish of the session on his very last cast!

Great to meet back up with Fallon, Jazz and their parents today. After attending one of our taster sessions, they were keen to learn more so had a 2 hour slot with Paul Forman.

They both worked really hard and it was great to see how quickly their skills developed over the session. Effort = reward and they truly deserved the bumper haul of Perch, Skimmer Bream, Common and Mirror Carp.

Well done and we look forward to their return next month.

A lovely morning catching up with a great friend Leslie Webber Mbe, founder of Angling Projects - incorporating Junior Coarse Angling

First time we have met up face to face since Covid and there was plenty to see with lots of work being undertaken to maintain this beautiful coaching venue.

Les is not only the founder of this charity, but also the Vice President of the Angling Coaches Association.

Todays visit was not only a catch up, but also to collect a very generous equipment donation Les has made for one of our students to help set him up with his own fishing equipment.

Please check out the Angling Projects page, to find out more about the work they do.

Les has also set up a donation page as his "birthday wish", every penny collected is spent wisely to maintain and enhance this very special coaching venue. https://www.facebook.com/donate/591634838514437/591634848514436/

Last weekend saw the end of our summer taster sessions at Cassiobury Farm and Fishery. What a busy weekend it proved to be with over 140 people having at least a 30 minute session with one of our coaches. Weather held up, great people and stacks of fish caught, can’t ask for more than that! Summer holidays are already becoming a distant memory and we will soon be back with our school courses including a new NOCN course for our KS4 students.

Thanks to everyone who attended and the team that helped make this happen…good times

Paul had a thoroughly enjoyable 2 hour session today on float fishing session with Stuart & Alex. Time flew by and plenty of action to boot.

This bank holiday weekend sees that last of the Cassiobury Farm and Fishery open days for 2021 (Saturday & Sunday).

The WAC team are looking forward to introducing some more people to fishing and catching up with those returning from previous events.

For those who are coming this weekend, please note that turnouts at the fishing stations for the first few events have been busy, especially in the afternoons, so advise that you come to the angling desk in the morning to avoid disappointment.

Check out the farms page for full details and to purchase entrance tickets, really is a great day out for all.

Many thanks to Holly for sending in photos of their session with us at the Cassiobury Farm and Fisheryopen days last weekend. Glad you enjoyed your time with us and caught plenty of fish.

Photos from Watford Angling Coaches's post 02/08/2021

Great taster sessions at Cassiobury Farm and Fishery this weekend, whilst the intermittent heavy rain showers took their toll at times, spirits were high and we manged to give 99 participants a half hour session and all managed to catch fish!

Thanks to the coaching team of Alan Colclough, Andrew Clark, Del Greening, Roger Smith, Paul Forman and Tony Forman who pulled out all the stops to make this such a successful return after a 2 year break!

We didn't have anyone available to take photos for us at this one, but hopefully we will be receiving some directly from the participants themselves, such as Emilia who sent through the pics below of their time at the lake.

Next open days will be held on the weekend of 14th & 15th August. Check out the Cassiobury farm page for details and to get entry tickets to the farm.

Been 2 years since Paul last managed a night at Carpdell fishery, nice to bag a second one in the shape of finish this upper double common. Time to pack down and get everything out for the first of the weekends taster seasions.

Getting set up for running our tasters sessions on Carpdell fishery as part of the cassiobury farm open days this weekend. WAC coach Paul Forman decided it was rude not to stay the night and 45 mins after casting out was rewarded with this 29lb 02 mirror!

The ever faithful NashBait scopex squid tripped this one up and the Nash Tackle size 7 claw showed it’s strength holding firm in a prolonged and hard scrap.

This weekends open days are fully booked but check out Cassiobury Farm and Fishery page for other dates available. A great family day out for sure.

Last 12 weeks have flown by, congratulations to all our students who completed their CAST awards courses with us. All were a pleasure to teach and their catches showed how well they all progressed.

With summer now upon us, its time to get ready for running our taster sessions at the Cassiobury Farm and Fishery open days. Check out their page for information on their open days and to purchase event tickets, certainly not one to miss a really great day out for the family.

Our Thursday schools group continue to go from strength to strength and are well on the way to becoming very competent, independent anglers. Plenty of fish banked and a wide range of species. The weeks are flying by but it’s great to see the progress each of them has made.

Photos from Watford Angling Coaches's post 02/05/2021

After waiting for over a year, it was great to get back to coaching with our school groups. 2 weeks in to a 12 week programme and things are going well with them.

Good morning everyone

The Government have now formally responded to the representations made by the Angling Trust. We have promoted the huge benefits of fishing on individual health and wellbeing and have been able to present a case to which the Government have listened. On this basis I am pleased to announce that fishing will be permitted during the third national lockdown.

The DCMS Sports Team confirmed the following;

“fishing is allowed as exercise so long as participants adhere to the rules on staying local, gathering limits, social distancing and limiting the time spent outdoors”

This has also been confirmed by DEFRA;

“Cabinet Office have now officially confirmed that angling / fishing (incl. sea fishing off private boats, water sports) can be considered exercise and are hence permitted.”

And by Sport England here -

We have worked extremely hard to reach this position and we as anglers have a duty to abide by the strict conditions under which fishing is once again permitted. With infection rates and death tolls rising we must stick to the Government’s rules and ensure that angling remains part of the solution and does not cause problems.

Please bear in mind these key points which will be reflected in the new Angling Trust guidelines which we will publish shortly:

- This is a strictly limited resumption of LOCAL fishing and very different to how we have been allowed to operate since May
- We are in a National Lockdown and this must be respected. The law requires a ‘reasonable excuse’ to leave your home or penalties will apply.
- The government has recognised that fishing can be seen as exercise, which is expressly permitted under the lockdown rules, although outdoor recreation is not.
- Organised sporting gatherings are prohibited so no match fishing.
- The exercise is limited to once a day so no overnight fishing whatsoever.
- To remain within the law you should follow the government’s guidance, and only fish locally. If you have no local fishing available then you will have to take your daily exercise in other ways.

We are once again able to enjoy the sport we love at a time when many others can not and we must ensure that every angler adheres to the rules.

I would ask all anglers who are not members to join the Angling Trust and give us your support. We have worked tirelessly to achieve this outcome and that is only possible thanks to the support of our new and existing members. I would ask all anglers who value their ability to go fishing to make the same commitment as your fellow anglers have and join the Angling Trust. We are stronger together!

Stay safe and very best fishes

Been some time since we last posted, what with Covid and our classroom having been flooded out, 2020 has been a "challenging" year (to put it politely!).
Lovely to end with good news though, Archie, Ollie and Jake, have all achieved their Level 2 Aim Qualifications in both Angling and Angling & The Environment Modules. Our thanks to the Angling Trust who helped out with verifying the qualifications based on the quality of work they had completed prior to the first lock down. Well deserved lads and congratulations from us.

With Tier 4 restrictions limiting us to 1-1 coaching only, our schools programmes will remain on hold, but hopefully that will change in time for the weather starting to warm up in March / April.

In the meantime, out best wishes to you all for the New Year ahead.

Photos from Watford Angling Coaches's post 09/07/2020

Final session of this school year, feels strange ending a year with just 1 pupil, but these are strange times! Hopefully get things back to normal by the end of 2020. Archie repeated his successes of last week with captures of Bream and Carp using both lift method and basic ledger tactics.

Summer is now upon us, please note that taster sessions remain suspended as it is simply not practical to deliver short 30 minute sessions to new /young anglers whilst keeping social distance.

Photos from Watford Angling Coaches's post 02/07/2020

Paul Forman undertook our first post lockdown coaching session today at Cassiobury Farm and Fishery.

Good to see one of our KS4 group, Archie again as he continues with his AIM award - Angling & The Environment module. Having worked with Archie for a long time, he is a very competent angler so maintaining the 2 metre social distance is not an issue. Was great to see him getting amongst the fish with plenty of Carp and a beautifully conditioned bream for his efforts.

Timeline photos 28/05/2020

A last minute move paid off for Paul, decided to move to the quietest part of the lake after a day of being surrounded by walkers, picnickers and the rest. Took less than half an hour for this common to pick up the bait. doing what it does best again!

TBT - Lets hear it for the girls!

No doubt about it, in our experience, over the years the interest in fishing has steadily been growing, and the sport can only benefit from that.

Lets hope that trend continues

Lockdown TBT - This time a look back at some of the cracking colne valley carp caught by our students over the years.

With the realisation that social distancing is going to be the norm for a long time, still do not know how this will impact coaching sessions, will just have to wait and see as and when restrictions are eased.

Stay safe

A lockdown TBT....going back to our early days

Great memories here, ,

- Rousebarn lake turning into Carpdell fishery.

- our first sessions with Chessbrook ESC

- The legendary fishing socials with Paul Forman, Tony Forman, David Brown, Pete Cardell plus trips with the family

- Dave setting the still unbroken 4.0m whip record with a 23lb 40z carp (not that he ever mentions it!)

- Petes "lucky" fishing outfits - certainly raised some eyebrows!

- Captures of the crucian/brown goldfish / fancy tail crosses

- The perfectly judged 20lb 01oz mirror scam!

- First trip to Blenheim...no action shots of boats rapidly taking on water unfortunately!!

- Dacorum Angling Project with Michael Heylin

- Hertfordshire Junior Carp Championships with John Castle

- Fishing competitions with 1st Rickmansworth Scouts

- Coaching for the RAF down at Little Britain Lakes

Fantastic times and great memories...looking forward to getting back out and making new ones as soon as possible.
