Queen Elizabeth - 1926 to 2022
Rest in Peace, Queen Elizabeth II 💕

Lots of concentration, good timing and effective harmony from Year 2 today while making music with their new Boomwhackers!

The Reception class are really settling in well with life in the ’Big School’ 💕
As we introduce the New Curriculum for Wales, we will be starting teaching children French in school! Pupils from Year 1 up will learn a bit of French to go with their English and Welsh. Merci beaucoup! 🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷

Year 5 travelled deep, deep underground yesterday at The Big Pit. Unfortunately they didn’t make it all the way down to Australia as they had to be back on the bus by 1:45 🤷♂️

Year 5 thought being a miner would be easy… they thought mining wouldn’t take much effort. Today they found out that working underground is a physical, tiring job!

Year 4 visited The Big Pit today and had the opportunity to be transported underground. We think we remembered to bring everyone back up to the surface 🤔

Year 6 travelled underground today as they visited The Big Pit. We were able to take some photos on the surface, but we couldn’t take phones or cameras underground in case they caused gas explosions 😳😳😳😳

Year 3 had a great time at The Big Pit today 💕 A loooooong journey but a wonderful experience to be transported deeeeeeep underground!
Hello! It has been fantastic to see so many children in their new school uniforms this week!
Every Friday children will be able to wear their own clothes for Dress Cool Fridays. They can wear their favourite football shirt, super hero T-shirt, princess dress, etc. Whatever they want to that will still be safe as they run around like crazy in the playground!
On Dress Cool Fridays we are going to ask for small donations to raise money for various charities.
On Fridays we will also be having Art Fridays so do not let the children wear really expensive clothes as they may come home covered in paint or clay! We will inform you when we will be using really messy materials!
This Friday we will be collecting donations for the West Wales Poundies dog rescue charity who are really running low on dog food.
Please send in money or tins and packets of dog food. Every small donation is important.
Thank you very much!
The New Curriculum for Wales has commenced at Bigyn!
There are lots of changes that we will be informing you of. Now there are no such things as Infants and Juniors or Foundation Phase and Key Stage One. We now have Pod 1 (Nursery and Reception), Pod 2 (Years 1, 2 and 3) and Pod 3 (Years 4, 5 and 6).
The children will need to remind Mr Howells whenever he uses the wrong words!

Well - that was a record! It only took three minutes for our brand new part-time Nursery children to settle in this afternoon 😁

It’s very calming looking at our new angel fish 💕

Our new Year 3 children are enjoying having their first ‘Junior Lunch’

The new Reception children enjoyed having their first ‘Big School Lunch’ 💕

It’s the first day of the new school year! New School Uniform Day!!!

Here are our first Bigyn pets to represent the New Curriculum for Wales. We’ve welcomed nine baby angel fish to the school. It’s a big fish tank as they’ll grow much bigger!
The angel fish have been chosen to represent the second Core Purpose of the New Curriculum: “enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work”.
The beautiful colours of these fish are very creative. Their colours and patterns remind us of an artist’s palette.
One of the male fish in this group will become the alpha male. He will grow to become the biggest fish of the group. He will boss the other fish around to make sure their growth is limited so that they don’t grow as big as him. Now that’s enterprising!
We will be organising elections on Facebook and in school to chose three more pets to represent the other three core purposes of the New Curriculum.
Having this aquarium is also part of our EU Erasmus+ ‘S.T.O.P.’ International Schools Project. This project focuses on mindfulness with pupils. S.T.O.P. stands for ‘Stop, Take a Breath, Observe, Proceed’. Watching our angel fish will help our pupils whenever they are stressed, angry, confused or down in the dumps.
We are really looking forward to seeing all the children dressed in their new school uniforms next Monday! Year 6 may wear black jumpers or hoodies as they are in their last year.
We will be starting giving DoJo points each day to pupils wearing school uniform (or PE kit on PE days). We will also be awarding DoJo points for lots of other reasons including good manners, completing homework and helping others.
Every Friday we will have an 'Express Yourself Friday' when children do not have to wear school uniform and can wear whatever they like!

We will be having four pets to represent the Four Core Purposes of the New Curriculum for Wales.
We’ll be voting for a reptile first. So post a response to vote for one one these reptiles:
1) Horsefield Tortoise (Press ‘Like’)
2) Bearded Dragon (Press ‘Love’)
3) Collared Lizard (Press ‘Care’)
4) Madagascan Day Gecko (Press ‘Wow’)
Make your vote by choosing one of these four emojis/ responses.

Good luck to all the ex-Bigyn pupils getting their GCSE results today. We’d love to find out what you’re up to next 😎
As we introduce the New Curriculum for Wales at our school we want to develop a new vision statement for Bigyn.
We would like to ask pupils, parents, guardians and relatives what they would like to see as visions for our school.
Please comment below with some suggestions. Here are some examples:
‘Developing pupils’ resilience and mental wellbeing so that they become strong and confident individuals’
‘Encouraging children to become inquisitive and independent learners’
‘Developing well balanced young people who are friendly, thoughtful and compassionate to others’
We’d love as many suggestions as possible as we plan for the New Curriculum here at Bigyn.

The New Curriculum for Wales is being developed in all Welsh schools. There are Four Core Purposes that will become the main priority for this new curriculum.
The Four Purposes aim to encourage pupils to be:
1) ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives;
2) enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work;
3) ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world;
4) healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.
At Bigyn we are going to help our pupils understand and focus on these Four Purposes by adopting school pets. There will be an animal chosen to represent each Purpose. We want to ask our pupils and parents/guardians to vote for their choice of animals by commenting below this post.
Please encourage your child to chose sensible pets for Bigyn (tigers are healthy, confident individuals but Mr Taylor isn’t that keen on mucking out their enclosure!)
Comment below using this example:
Purpose 1 - chameleon
Purpose 2 - tropical fish
Purpose 3 - tortoise
Purpose 4 - hamster
Don’t worry if your animal has already been chosen by someone else - we want to see which animals get the most mentions 👍

The school is looking great with our new double glazed windows which will make the building more energy efficient. Thank you to Carmarthenshire County Council for £120,000 of investment in the school 👌

Message from Carmarthenshire CC
📣 Following samples taken earlier today, Natural Resources Wales have identified blue-green algae in the water at North Dock, Llanelli.
⚠️ As a precaution, we have installed warning signs asking people and their animals not to enter the water.
⛔ Please ensure you and your pets do not come into contact with the algae or the water, and make sure you maintain basic hand hygiene.
💦 Blue-green algae naturally occurs in inland waters, estuaries and the sea. Blooms can form when their numbers become excessive.
☠️ Bloom and scum-forming blue-green algae can produce toxins. These toxins can be very dangerous to animals. In humans, they can cause rashes after skin contact and illnesses if swallowed.
