Weekly Duck update! 9MK continue to take growth measurements of Jerry, Bob and Eggbert. They are on average about 250g in weight and 28cm tall. They no longer enjoy their snuggles and are loving their swimming! The students are learning how to keep the duck enclosure nice and clean.

OGC Chess Tournament 2024
Last week, OGC hosted its second chess tournament with 18 players taking part across the day. It was great seeing young people from across the college come together and demonstrate excellent sportsmanship.

Our overall winner, for the second time, was Abi (11LC). Well done, Abi!

It’s what the whole of the OGC community has been waiting for… duck update!!
9MK have been practising their measuring and weighing skills every day with Jerry, Bob and Egbert having almost doubled in height and quadrupling in weight!! They love their food!
They’ve learned to dive in their paddling pool and make a big splash!
Remy, one of the class therapy dogs, has been adopted by the ducklings as daddy duck - following him around relentlessly! Nellie and Coco see them more as potential playmates!
Students from around the college are enjoying spending time with them all, providing well-being opportunities for those that require them.

Duckdate (duck-update):
Today, Jerry, Bob and Eggbert experienced their first swims and love exploring some grass. Students from around the college are enjoying meeting our little ducklings with some being brave and holding them.

Year 10 welcomed Daisy who owns Dee Dees Cafe in Findon to their cooking class and together they showcased their recipe for rocky road, which just happens to be a firm favourate at Dee Dees.
Daisy shared her career journey which began working in an office environment in London. Daisy shares how her passion for baking was always there so when she had the opportunity to purchase the site in Findon she took it. However, when covid hit after 6 months of being open she described she took the opportunity to get to know her local community by ; helping them, doing their shopping, baking them treats and making them meals to try and help make their lives a bit easier at a difficult time.

Daisy shared how she works with a team of 5 who are incredible and all love to laugh, have fun and how they all have each other's backs. Daisy described how they see themselves as one team, all the same level and they all encourage each other to do their best and encourage each other out of their comfort zones.

Student feedback quote of the day was :

“I loved making Rocky Road and it was really nice talking to her”

Daisy’s feedback was;

“I admit I was very nervous coming in today, but I feel very privileged to have met you all and cannot believe how many skills there are in one room, thank you so much for having me and I would say follow your dream as I haven't looked back.”

Thank you so much for your time and sharing your story Daisy we look forward to welcoming you back to Oak Grove College !

Thank you to Bird and Blend for coming along in National Careers Week to share with Year 10 their career journeys and thriving business in Goring. Full story will be in the next newsletter !

"We had a wonderful time doing a tea tasting experience at Oak Grove College, introducing teachers and students to our magical world of tea. The students were absolutely delightful and asked lots of great questions about the types of tea, the flavours and blends and also about our stores. As it was National Careers Week, Tea Mixologist Carey and I both shared a little bit about our career pathways and how we ended up working at Bird & Blend Tea Co., a dynamic and creative retail company with stores all over the UK and a thriving global ecommerce website. The students put so much effort into doing the tea quiz, noting down their tea tasting notes and everyone had a go at tasting the tea samples. The winner seemed to be the Blue Raspberry tea, cold brewed in lemonade - so maybe we even managed to convert some non tea fans into liking iced tea! - Meg Fenn, Brand Innovation Executive at Bird & Blend Tea Co"

Neurodiverse young people in the work place 16/01/2024

We want to hear from employers and business owners, can you help?

We want to understand how we can break down barriers to entry into the workplace for our talented pool of young people.

Please can you complete this short survey (takes 6-8 minutes)

"Oak Grove College and The Sand Project in Worthing are both fully committed to supporting our young people into the workplace. All of our young people have EHCP's (educational healthcare plans) and many are neurodiverse. We work with many local businesses who are supportive, inclusive and help with work experience and recruitment, however there are still those who are hesitant to get involved and we want to explore more about their reasons for this."

Neurodiverse young people in the work place We would love to hear your thoughts on working with and employing neurodiverse young people
