Performing Arts: Dance Higher National Certificate

Before enrolling at City College, Perry was teaching with local dance company, Street Factory Studios, and labouring for a friend’s company fitting windows and conservatories. Wanting to take his passion for dance to the next level, Perry decided to enrol on the HNC Performing Arts: Dance course.

“I actually went to a College Open Day to support my cousin, but I saw that there was a dance programme and decided to find out more. Before I knew it, I was filling out an application form and couldn’t wait to start the course!

“The thing I enjoyed most about it was the freedom you had to explore different areas of the industry. There was an importance put on individual development of physical and creative skills, and I was able to build a solid professional portfolio from the range of experience I gained on this programme.

“I feel the HNC programme helped to make me more employable. The arts is a tough industry to crack but this course gave me the skills, depth of knowledge and confidence to pursue a career in this sector. I know how to promote myself and find work, which is vital in such a competitive trade.

“I’m hoping to run my own company one day, where I can share my passion for performing and choreography and pass on my experiences of the arts industry.”

Business Management Foundation Degree

After achieving high A level grades in business studies Annabel joined the College on the Business Management Foundation Degree. Now in her final year of university, she is exploring all the different opportunities now available to her.

“I was aware of City College’s outstanding reputation as an education provider and heard from friends who studied here how much they enjoyed it.

“The staff were very supportive and really want you to get the education you deserve, which was proven to me the first time I walked through the doors. I originally applied to study a BTEC in Business failing to realise this was the equivalent to my A levels, but the lecturer recommended I try the Business Management Foundation Degree. Within the hour I was enrolled on the course and I knew this was the place for me.

“Before starting the course I had very little idea of what I wanted to do. However, the Foundation Degree explores all areas of business giving you a comprehensive knowledge of the industry and helping you to identify your strengths and weaknesses in order to choose the right career path. This programme helped me to find several areas of interest that I could pursue.

“The lecturers really care about your education and want you to achieve. I was supported throughout my decision to go on and study at university, and I really do believe that a Foundation Degree is the best stepping stone to higher education.”

Foundation Degree in Strength Conditioning and Sports Coaching

Dayle enrolled at the College knowing what path he wanted his career to take and felt the Foundation Degree in Strength, Conditioning and Sports Coaching was the first step. After completing his studies, Dayle went on to open several gyms including a CrossFit facility in Mallorca - Block HQ - and is now at university topping up his degree to obtain full honours.
“I decided to study the Foundation Degree in Strength, Conditioning and Sports Coaching at the College because the training was perfectly in line with what I wanted to do in the future. I felt the programme would give me all the right skills to get ahead in the industry.
“The lecturers are what really made my time at the College memorable. I felt that help was always there when you needed it and our lecturers wanted to give us the best possible start to our careers. I am incredibly grateful as, without their guidance, I don’t think I’d have completed the two years.
“The experience and understanding I gained while attending the College provided me with a great foundation of knowledge. After completing the programme, I moved to Phuket in Thailand and opened my own facility specialising is weight loss and conditioning. My training spring-boarded me straight into the career I wanted and enabled me to work with everyone from everyday clientele to world-class athletes.
“I currently own three gyms and a restaurant in Thailand, and am the co-founder of another facility in Mallorca. I have trained PGA Tour Players, UFC Fighters, NHL Players and CrossFitters, and last year I was able to set up a partnership with City College to give work experience opportunities to the sport students.

Marine Engineering Foundation Degree

After leaving school with C’s in maths, English and science Dean decided to go down the Apprenticeship route. He felt this pathway was the best option and the prospect of earning while learning seemed too good to pass up. After completing his studies, Dean took seven years out to seek other opportunities but in 2013 he decided he wanted to go back to education.

“Having been away from a learning environment for so long it was nice to go back as an older student and go into a field I knew I had an interest in. As I grew older, I realised the importance of a good education and thought the Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering would be a good place to start.

“The College environment was completely different to school. People around you wanted to learn and I felt there was more of a variety of teaching methods, with the course catering to all learning types. The lectures had good knowledge of the industry and were accessible wherever and whenever you needed them.

“I have now gone on to university to complete my final year and gain my full honours degree in Mechanical Design and Manufacture. I am set to graduate next year with a first class degree.”

Early Years Foundation Degree
Before coming to City College, Rachel was working in a nursery where she completed an Apprenticeship. Wishing to move up the ranks, Rachel enrolled on the Early Years Foundation Degree to improve her knowledge and gain the skills to go further.
“I chose to study at the College as my passion has always been in childcare and education. I attended one day a week, which meant I could continue doing what I love - working with children.
“I enjoyed developing and improving my knowledge of early years. The course offered a depth of understanding that I could put into practice at work. This helped me to climb up the ranks and I am now a Senior Practitioner at the nursery.
“I enjoyed the College atmosphere; it was a very fun and positive. I am also grateful for my lecturers’ drive and passion. They gave me courage and confidence in my own abilities. They helped me to see there are so many opportunities ahead of me and that I could go on to achieve so much more than I ever thought possible.
“I am currently topping up my degree at university to achieve my full BA Honours in Early Childhood Studies. Once I have finished, I plan to go on and gain my Early Years Professional Status (EYPS).”
