🎖️ Join us in commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day with a series of special events organised by Shavington-cum-Gresty Parish Council!
📘 To begin the commemoration, a booklet highlighting the heroic story of local figure Richard Pryce Hughes has been meticulously researched by historian Mark Potts and will be distributed to households in the Parish, and given to all children at Shavington Primary School
🏛️ Visit the D-Day and WWII exhibition at Shavington-cum-Gresty Village Hall on Saturday 1 June (11am-5pm) and Sunday 2 June (11am-4pm). Curated by local historian Mark Potts, this exhibition focuses on the stories of local heroes and the local area during the war. Plus, don't miss Mark Potts' insightful talk on Air Raids in Crewe and Nantwich at 2pm on Saturday 1 June, at the exhibition.
👧👦 Bring the children along for a special trail designed just for them! It's a fantastic opportunity for children to engage with history in a fun and interactive way. Entry is completely free!
🕯️ On Thursday 6 June, join us at 9pm for a poignant Beacon Lighting ceremony on St. Mark's Church field, following national guidance.
🎨Before the ceremony, be sure to admire the beautiful artwork and creative poetry read by Shavington Academy students & Primary School Children, all inspired by this historic event.
🎬Plus, look out on our social media to hear firsthand accounts from local D-Day veteran Bernard Morgan, interviewed by Shavington Academy students.
🎥 These events will be filmed to create a lasting historical record, ensuring that the bravery and sacrifices of our community are never forgotten.
💰 Funding for these events has been generously provided by Shavington-cum-Gresty Parish Council and through the Cheshire East Levelling Up funding.
Let's come together to honour and remember the heroes of D-Day. We look forward to seeing you there!
Wishing all of our children and families a fabulous half term.
See you back in school on Tuesday 4th June (Monday is an INSET day)
😊

The tortoise teaches us REFLECTIVENESS, so we learn how to slow down and think about our work.
We redraft our writing and check it all makes sense and that we have done the best we can.
Fun Fact Friday!
Most people cannot lick their elbows. (Try it!)
You cannot sneeze with your eyes open. (Try this, too!)
Your nose may not grow like Pinocchio’s, but it does get warmer when you tell a lie.

Today's Menu
Roast Beef with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes & gravy.
OR
Vegetarian cottage pie

The rhino teaches us RESILIENCE, so we are learning to persevere. Even if our work is difficult we do not give up! We try to handle any distractions.

FUN FACT FRIDAY!
Sports Have Been Played on the Moon.
In 1971, Alan Shephard and Edgar Mitchell made history when they became the first people to play sport on the moon. The Apollo 14 astronauts participated in what Mitchell later jokingly described as “the first lunar Olympics”. Shephard hit a golf ball while Mitchell threw a makeshift javelin – it was actually a staff they’d used in one of their scientific experiments.

The beaver teaches us RESOURCEFULNESS, so we are learning that lots of things in our classroom can help us learn. If we use a dictionary or a number line we might not need to ask for help from our teacher.

DIARY DATES!
If you have any questions regarding any of the events coming up please contact the office directly and they will be able to help.

FUN FACT FRIDAY!
The sun's gravity holds our entire solar system. Our solar system is even named after the Sun (the Latin word for Sun is 'sol'). Heat from the sun makes earth warm enough to live on. Without light from the sun, there would be no plants or animals - and therefore, no food and we wouldn't exist!
The Year 6 are off on their residential. We hope you all have a wonderful time and we cannot wait to hear about it when you're back!

The ant teaches us about RELATIONSHIPS, so we are learning to work with our friends.
Sometimes working together is the best way to learn.
We can share ideas with our friends and take great ideas from books and the internet.

FUN FACT FRIDAY!
Bananas are berries, but strawberries aren't.
Berries, by definition, have their seeds on the inside, whilst you can see just by looking at a strawberry that they hold their seeds on the outside. However, the seeds in a banana are so tiny we don’t really notice they are there, but they are – putting them firmly in the ‘berry’ family!
