So, in 2019, he applied for the 1st edition of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation Innovation Award (AHSF-IA). The award targets innovative solutions with significant social impact, responsive & high potential to scale in six fields. SmartCure qualified in the field of Green Technology & Environmental Sustainability & Dr. Feras was one of only nine innovators in Jordan who was awarded for Stage-1 – dedicated to Proof of Concept & Prototyping (prelaunch) phase. This recognition gave him the necessary runway to commercialise this solution.

Eng. Laith laid out a careful distinction for our on the differences between valuing an innovation vis-à-vis valuing a business. The former is a potential use-case for a technology, the latter demonstrates how value can both be created and captured. The potential investors have have a lot more comfort with the latter, i.e. five years of track record, reliable cash flows, and growing traction.

Eng. Laith has over 25 years of business and development experience. He identified, invested in and was involved in 19 startup companies, several of which have become paragons of success.

Our fellows from the Leaders in Innovation Fellowships Programme were delighted to meet Richie Wirjan at yesterday’s international unconference on Investment.

Richie had a great checklist for people seeking do’s & don’ts with investor community. Entrepreneurs seeking funds should also check out the investor, their typical size of investments, when do they invest, what types of start-ups they investment in? Most investors specialise in a niche. Secondly preparation is key, your data room should be prepared. Investors like preparedness & responsiveness be accurate & forthcoming on your challenges & constraints. Don’t play with your numbers as all is revealed in the due diligence that follows, & lack of trustworthiness leads to a no-deal, lost time & lost reputation. Going for dumb money hurts your chances with future investment rounds, especially if you are dragging your startup vehicle with 11 non-strategic investors in very early stages.
