Children’s Story Time Creative Writing Competition

Below is the start of a story. Your task is to develop and complete it.

‘A shimmering light glistened through the cracks of the door. A part of her wanted to turn around and run, but she couldn't resist. Like a magnet enticing its prey, she was drawn to it, edging closer and closer as the light grew brighter. With her heart pumping as though it would explode, she placed her right hand on the handle and slowly turned it. The door creaked open, releasing a light so gleaming that she was forced to close her eyes. With eyes shut tight, she took a step forward, and then another. All of a sudden, the door slammed shut behind her.’

The Cave
Written by Andrew, Juleeyan, Alexa, and Nilojan

Once there were two detectives named Lucas and Angus. Lucas was the hilarious one and Angus the sensible one. One day, they decided to go on an expedition in the forest.

“Oh, I forgot my jacket I will go and get it!” Angus mumbled. Before Angus left, he went into his room taking glances behind him and searched under his bed for his secret box. He opened his box and stuffed his empty pockets full of his detective kit.

“Hurry up!” said Luca.

“Wait, I am changing my trousers because I spilt water over them,” said Angus. When he came out, Lucas remarked, “You are wearing the same trousers!”

“It is a duplicate,’’ lied Angus, ‘’come on let’s go!”

“What is a duplicate?” asked Luca.

“A duplicate is a copy,” explained Angus.

They went for walk in the forest until their legs almost collapsed. They kept on walking deeper and deeper, paying no attention to their legs whatsoever. They ran wearily along the green grass. All of a sudden, there was a storm, and the wind was howling and screeching. They saw an enormous tree. Behind it was a wooden, creepy cottage.

“Look Angus, there is a huge cottage!’’ shouted Lucas. ‘’We could go inside to shelter from this dreadful storm.” There was a bridge separating the cottage and them. Beneath it was a hungry troll. At that moment, the was a flash of lighting right in front of the cottage. Lucas and Angus walked to the cottage scared. Steadily, Lucas opened the bronze, coated door with a petrified feeling within him. Inside it was dim and creepy. Spider webs hung from the rotten, wooden and dead ceiling. Bugs and flies buzzed around the house. As they walked into the room, there was a screech and a howl, making a vase jump off a shelf, obliterating it into microscopic pieces as the wind rushed through, trapping them inside. All of a sudden, all the walls were closing in around them. Luckily Angus had a hammer. He smashed the wall with the hammer. “Lucas, grab my hand,” shouted Angus. With a grunt, Angus heaved Lucas out of the room. After Angus pulled Lucas out of the room, he was puffing and panting. After resting, they found two heavy, large sticks and placed them between the two walls so that they wouldn’t be squished.

They got three crooked, bony twigs and a large leaf and placed it on top of the twigs and made a tent. It was raining heavily. As they stood under a tree the creature was pounding on top of them. It was hitting with a tremendous force like a bomb exploding. As they laid on the ground they crouched in fear. Angus and Lucas silently begged their hearts out, hoping not to be eaten by the creature. When they woke up, they found skin scattered about. No plants or water surrounded them. Suddenly, there was a deep gurgle in the depth of the cave. An ocean of blood came and drowned them deeper into the cave. They realised that no cave would have blood flowing through it. So where were they?

Hello my dear friends, as I explained during yesterday's Children's Story Time show, about six weeks ago, I asked the children in both my Storybook Clubs (aged between 6 and 9) to jointly create and write a story with a mysterious ending. I must say that I am incredibly proud of them for their focus, determination, creativity, and ability to work in a team. I'm pleased that they utilised many of the skills they learned during our class sessions - creating characters and settings, descriptive text, show not tell, to name just a few.

I will be posting both stories this morning. Below is the first one.

The Mystery Murder
Written by – Ariella, Timisimi, Wande, Tioluwani, Obehi, AJ, Tioluwani, Jokotola, and Joshua

Centuries long ago, on an island called Maldives, there was a brave and strong man. He had a beautiful daughter named Kate. She liked to play with her friends.

They lived on a big island surrounded by sky blue oceans. The island had pineapple trees, palm trees and coconut trees. There were lots of beaches and farms.

On the island there were different types of animals like alligators, lions, zebras, dogs, cats, black cats and giraffes. They also had different species of plants like poison ivy, cactus, climbing bungalow plants, thorn bushes, blossom trees, willow trees, roses and spiky bungalows. Kate and her friends even had a secret treehouse in one of the willow trees.

Kate was an adventurous girl who loved her friends and family and showed love and loyalty to all she met. She was a sweet and mischievous girl, and enjoyed helping around the house, just like her father. You usually found her changing into different costumes, pretending to be a chef cooking eggs or a detective looking for her next case. She even had her own secret base with personal ID. If she didn’t have an ID, she would get caught by the flying drones.

One morning she wanted to give her father his breakfast, but when she entered, she saw blood splatted all over the walls, and he was lying dead on the bed. She was horrified and screamed so loudly that her whole body was shaking with fear. The plates in her hands dropped on the floor and shattered across the whole room. As she surveyed the pieces of her broken plate on the floor, she noticed several weapons scattered across the room - swords, knives, guns and many other weapons of destruction. She ran out of the house, shivering with fear, looking for who killed her father. She called the cops. They searched the house for clues. As they were looking for clues, they saw a card that said “If you want to save your dad, come and find us”.

They found out this mischievous person’s name was Fiago, and he had a gang of murderous rebels. When she saw the rebels, they circled her, armed with weapons. Kate wore a disguise so that they would think she was a boy. She sneaked into their house to find out how they had killed her father. She found a gun and took it to the police.

The police asked them many questions but they still had no clues about how her father was killed. Suddenly, Kate saw a massive card on the ground. She picked it up and read it. It said, “You are getting closer, but it is too hard to solve.”
Kate was scared, but she was determined to solve the mystery murder. She continued looking for evidence in Fiago’s room. As she was looking for evidence, she noticed fingerprints. She followed the fingerprints all the way to her home. She saw Fiago stealing from her home. When she saw him, Kate ran after him.
It was too late, and he had already gone, so she went to bed. She woke up in the morning and saw a card that said, you almost got me last night, but now you need to go higher and higher to find me. He came again.
She hid in the boot of the car as he was leaving. In the boot was his weapons and all the stuff he had stolen. They drove for two days. Kate took all her stuff back and jumped out of the boot when they arrived at Fiago’s home.
She jumped out of the boot and cornered Fiago. Fiago did not want to die, so he showed Kate all his secrets and he also told her how he killed her father. He said he made Kate’s best friend dress up like him and unknown to Fiago, there was a tracking device on his coat. As a result, they were able to follow the tracking device and locate Fiago. When they found him, they shot him without hesitation. The bullet travelled as quickly as lightning. Once the bullet had pierced through his body, blood gushed out of him like water from a waterfall. It spread across the entire floor creating a mass of red ocean.
By the time Kate was forty, Fiago’s children had become professional detectives and wanted to get rid of Kate the way she had desperately wanted to kill Fiago .They wanted payback. Kate felt bad about killing Fiago, but she knew it was fate that brought it upon her. She explained to them why she killed their father, then asked them to join her top-secret agency. Once they joined, they found out their father had put sonic chips in their necks when they were much younger, and as they grew older, they began to discover new powers - levitation, strength and speed, which they used to fight evil. But one day, whilst on a mission, masked men jumped out of the trees and captured Kate… to be continued
