OCR Specification Reference 4.1 - Communicable Diseases Antibodies are produced by a type of B-lymphocyte called a plasma cell as part of the secondary specific immune response. For exams, you would need to be able to identify different parts on a diagram of an antibody as well as recognising the difference between the constant and variable regions in terms of the role of the antibody. An antibody is an example of a quaternary protein as they are made up of four separate polypeptide chains, two heavy and two light. The lower 3/4 of the structure makes up the constant region which stays the same between different antibodies. The top part, called the variable region, is structured to be complementary to the antigen it is designed to bind to. Each antibody has two separate binding sites, meaning it has the potential to bind to two antigens on two separate pathogens at the same time. This increases the chances of phagocytosis due to a process known as agglutination. The different chains of the antibody are held together by disulphide bridges. These are strong bonds that form between sulphur-containing cysteine amino acids.
