Hey folks,

I hope you are all well and having the best bank holiday weekend so far!

Just a quick one from me, I am stopping Wonky Dancer classes for a little bit as I'm currently working two jobs (cozzy lives) and I don't feel I can give myself fully to The Wonky Dancer which is not what any of us deserve.

I am going to re-callibrate and spend some time building the brand and the concept and come back strong in the autumn.
I will be sure to keep everyone updated and continue to work in the background until I feel I am ready to come back with a BANG.

thank you all for the support so far in this journey, it's been amazing hearing your stories and working with you all so far!

Session 2 - 19:00 tonight @ Workout Harbourside

Apologies for the radio silence since our first session! We’ve been working hard in the background on session plans and listening to feedback.

The Wonky Dancer session 1 was fantastic. It was so great to come together in person and listen to stories, share experiences and even move a little!

We will now be meeting weekly to build up our confidence and explore this thing further.

Thank you to all who attended and as always - if you would like to get involved, go ahead and drop us a message!

Welcome to The Wonky Dancer!

We are a new dance collective that honours the individual without the traditional ideals of the industry. Here at The Wonky Dancer, we are all about harnessing passion and individual skill over codified technique. Founder Ellie (that’s me by the way I’m just trying to act professional), struggled with the singular pathway that the professional dance world offers (train, learn to pick up choreography, be the best at the audition, get the part) due to having issues with sequencing. She felt there was no other way to pursue what she so desperately loved. The Wonky Dancer is for those who like Ellie, do not feel they can access this world. We are about collaboration and re-focusing on the human behind the moves. 💃

Our first meeting is on Tuesday (11/07/2023) at 7:30pm. - 8:30pm GMT over Zoom. If you’re interested in joining, please send me your email address via personal message and I will email you the link the night before.

I am so excited about the first online session of The Wonky Dancer next Tuesday! I will run the session and ensure that we keep time etc.
At the moment, topics of conversation will include:

- Wonky Dancer weekly sessions (yes or no)

- If yes, how would we like class to run for everyone to be comfortable (improv/structured)

-Performance opportunities/do we want to perform at all?

-A bit about you - in the chat or speaking on camera.

This session will run on Tuesday the 11th of July at 7:30pm. - 8:30pm GMT If you’re interested in joining, please send me your email address via personal message and I will email you the link the night before.

I understand that speaking on zoom can be overwhelming. Please know, there is no pressure to speak or have your camera on.

Hi, I’m Ellie, the founder of The Wonky Dancer. For as long as I can remember I wanted to be a dancer and took classes from 6 years old. I went on to gain a degree in dance and a master's in choreography. I’ve always loved movement and performing but struggled with the pressures of perfection and the competitive nature of the industry. Not only that but I am neurodivergent which causes me to struggle with picking up choreography and sequencing. This was a constant battle when I was training at university, no matter how hard I tried I just couldn’t keep up with my peers in class and when it came to auditions and workshops. I then realised that I would never be able to get work as a professional dancer as these skills are essential in the current professional landscape. Once I realised this, I ultimately decided to give up on my dreams.
Cut to last year, I was in a supermarket and I picked up a packet of ‘wonky’ fruit, the tag line said “no fruit gets left behind” and this got me thinking - Just because I’m not a ‘perfect’ dancer, doesn’t mean I can’t add value with my art. Maybe, I’ve just got to do things differently. The more I thought about this the more I thought that there must be thousands of others in my position. That’s why I want to gather us together so we can do things our way, the way that works for us. Hence, “The Wonky Dancer”.
- If you can relate to my story, please get in contact via DM, I am currently on the hunt for a group of dancers/performers who would like to regain control of their art - I will ensure we are inclusive and attentive to all needs. I live In Bristol and have a full-time job but I am willing to give up a couple of evenings a week to get things started. Let me know if you have any questions or queries - I am always around for a chinwag!
