Traditional Greek Panygiri
What is a Panigiri?
A Panigiri is a centuries old traditional festival organized during the summer months mainly in the villages of Greek islands where the main saint is celebrated.
The host of the festival is the “panigiras”, a local who has the honor to carry the icon of the saint to his home for a year and bring it back on the day of the celebration to be blessed during the liturgy.
The festival is not only chanting and praying, but also good music, plenty food and local wine and of course many stalls for shopping 🛍️ 🍷 🍺

Evzones
Greek guards or “Evzones” are members of the Presidential Guard found outside the Hellenic Parliament. They have become synonymous with the city of Athens and were originally founded in 1868 as a regiment of the Greek army. It is a high honour for a soldier to be selected to join the Evzones.
They guard the grave of the Unknown Soldier that represents the common memory of all unknown soldiers killed at war. The changing of the Greek guards occurs every day at the top of the hour.
From Monday to Saturday the Evzones will be dressed in their khaki summer service uniform or in their black winter uniform.
The traditional dress of Greek guards include the while kilt or “Foustanella” which has 400 pleats representing the number of years Greece was under Turkish occupation. They are handmade by special craftsman taking around 80 days to make.

Happy Easter!
One of the most important Greek Easter Traditions is the Epitaph of Jesus Christ, the symbolic funeral bier of Jesus Christ. It is covered completely with flowers, and flowers are wired to the supports of the canopy and the canopy itself. From Friday morning and throughout the day, there is a line outside every church as people wait to pay their respects. People approach the beautifully decorated Easter Epitaph and kiss the icon of Christ, which has been taken down from the cross and wrapped in linen. In many places, little children will pass beneath the Easter Epitaph.
Traditionally, families across Greece dye eggs red on Holy Thursday. Dying eggs red in anticipation of Greek Easter is one of the oldest and most beloved traditions in Greece.
The red eggs hold significant religious symbolism, as the color red symbolizes the blood Christ shed on the cross.
Additionally, the egg in itself is a symbol—its hard shell represents the sealed tomb of Jesus—the cracking of which symbolizes His resurrection from the dead and exit from the tomb.
Due to its religious significance, the egg serves as an emblem of the resurrection, and its decorated Easter variations are globally recognized as a symbol of the most special day on the Christian calendar—Easter, the event that sealed the promise of eternal life.

Holy Thursday
On Thursday of Holy Week four events are commemorated: the washing of the disciples' feet, the institution of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist at the Last Supper, the agony in the garden of Gethsemane, and the betrayal of Christ by Judas.

On Holy and Great Wednesday, Orthodox Christians remember the act of Christ’s anointing with myrrh by a “sinful woman” before his crucifixion. It is also a time in Greece when churchgoers anoint themselves in a solemn evening service.
In the afternoon, in all churches, the mystery of the Holy Gospel is told once again, and then the events of the Last Supper and the washing of the Apostles’ feet by Jesus are recalled. The faithful also remember the nefarious plans of Judas Iscariot to betray Jesus.
On Wednesday, people remember the woman who anointed Christ’s feet as he sat in the house of Simon. In the hymnography of the day, the account in Matthew 26:6-13 is combined with that in Luke 7:36-50 (cf. also John 12:1-8).

Μεγάλη Τρίτη - Holy Tuesday

Today is Orthodox Holy Monday ☦️
On this day, we commemorate Joseph the Patriarch, the son of Jacob (from the Old Testament).
This is also the day that the church remembers the moment that Jesus cursed the fig tree on his way into Jerusalem during His triumphant entry.
This video simply explains Holy Week and true meaning behind Easter.

Happy Palm Sunday
Μετά την Κυριακή των Βαΐων ή Κυριακή του Λαζάρου, αρχίζει η Μεγάλη Εβδομάδα, η Εβδομάδα των Παθών.
On the Sunday before the Feast of Great and Holy Pascha and at the beginning of Holy Week, the Orthodox Church celebrates one of its most joyous feasts of the year. Palm Sunday is the commemoration of the Entrance of our Lord into Jerusalem following His glorious miracle of raising Lazarus from the dead.

Lazarákia are small, sweet spice breads made in Greece and Cyprus by Orthodox Christians on Lazarus Saturday, the Saturday that begins Holy Week. They are eaten to celebrate the miracle of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead.
