Photo Tutoring

This month I got to help 2 of my tutees begin to master advanced composition involving elements of science and mathematics.

The joy of art and photography is they make academic subjects fun!

Having previously mastered the rule of thirds, it was time to move on to Golden Ratios.

We began November looking at Fibonacci. Finding out what his sequence is and looking at how this creates patterns in nature.

Having found as many examples in real life and with web research as possible! This took us from roses and sunflowers to pineapples, shells, and even galaxies.

Next we looked at the Fibonacci sequence as growing boxes creating a perfect grid and how the Golden Spiral lays over it perfectly to lead the eye to a single main focal point.

How do you learn this if your phone camera doesn't overlay a grid?

Well, obviously it's time to get handy!
1. Print
2. Stencil it on cardboard
3. Cut it out!

Following this we used our Golden Spirals to pre-frame our photographs so we had a tangible way to see the composition BEFORE taking the photographs.

Once this was mastered we moved on to the other applications of the Golden Ratio in the form of the Golden Grid (Phi Grid) and Golden Triangles. (I'll leave those for you to work out for yourself! Got to have something to research!)

By the end of the month we even had a quick guide for when to utilise each of the compositional tools depending upon:

- How many focal points are in a scene
- How far apart they are spread
- Whether the scene has softer curved lines or is more angular and linear!

We even covered some literacy, reading, articulation and presentation skills, graphic packages and safe searching of the web!

CHALLENGE:
Choose ONE MONTH (we did February) and scroll your camera roll to thin down and smarten up.

Start with the following THREE questions:

📲1) Are these photographs still needed

How many of us have photos of a reciept or a reminder to show someone something that mean nothing now???

DELETE MEANINGLESS PHOTOS!

📲 2) Are there identical or almost duplicates?

Sometimes we have 20 of the same photo taken on click and hope or to capture that one moment.

DELETE the blurry ones, the exact duplicates and the ones that are least good / funny / important to the story

📲 3) Do the photos remaining from that day ALL add meaning to the story?

Have you ever snapped 13 pictures of you and a friend, the same people, or your kids at different times on the same day?

Chances are if you look through some will stand out as AWESOME and others will be mediocre, and others should never see the light of day!

DELETE THE TERRIBLE ONES

If the mediocre ones don't have important context (E.g. ONLY photo of you and kids infront of significant landmark) they may be unecessary EVEN if they are different

I challenge you to be MORE SELECTIVE about what you keep!

FINALLY SCROLL THE MONTH AGAIN and ENJOY

Our newest student made this photo collage with his light and colour photographs after his 3rd week!

Last week Lucas and Miss Lizzy had great fun working one to one on his editing skills.

The session tailored specifically to the interests of the child who has been studying photography for almost half a year so covered intermediate and advanced skills including:

- DOWNLOADING and UPLOADING images

- Using the HEALING TOOL to remove simple objects

- Using the CLONE BRUSH to remove awkward objects:

- VISIOSPATIAL AWARENESS and FINE-MOTOR COORDINATION skills for sampling the right background colour tone and texture, then following the mouse moving where you are painting AND where you originally selected WITHOUT painting in unwanted objects while hiding the unwanted item.

- Honing the eye for detail using the SELECTION TOOLS - LASSO and WAND

- Using the ERASER

- COMPOSITING photographs

I love that teaching photography to kids I get to play like a big kid! This weeks theme was refraction and reflection including bending light.

This July we have been looking at the ways we can change how our photographs FEEL and tell a STORY.

We found out we need CONTRAST of light or texture to make a good BLACK AND WHITE photograph.

Then we took our photographs and we have learnt to use a free online editing software to EDIT our photographs in Black & White.

We have added amazing photography words to our vocabulary such as Crop, Highlight, Shadow and Vignette (similar too vinagrette for salad as we had a good giggle about).

After our 3rd session learning these things these were some of our photographs we shared for our Photo Ninja Challenge!
