As the BVNA campaign comes to a close we thought we'd summarise the importance of the Veterinary Nursing role, and is defined by the VN Council as such:

💬 “Veterinary nursing aims to ease the suffering and pain of animals, and to improve their health and welfare.

“This includes providing any medical treatment or any minor surgery (not involving entry into a body cavity) to animals under the direction of a veterinary surgeon who has that animal under their care.

"Veterinary nursing can be either proactive or reactive, and autonomous or collaborative. It is carried out in a wide variety of settings, for animals at all life stages, and considers the background and needs of the animal’s owner or keeper.”

🐱 Vet Nursing Awareness Month - Alumni student case study

"I currently work as an internal medicine nurse at The Ralph referral Hospital and absolutely love it"

🎓 Warwickshire College and University Centre Alumni, Heather Simcock, aged 27 from Shropshire started studying for her FdSc Veterinary Nursing degree at Pershore College in 2015, graduating in 2018.

From the age of 15-16 Heather knew that she wanted to be a Veterinary Nurse and so took the degree level route, which she says she personally loved.

🗨️"The course was split so that half of the year we were in college in lectures and the other half of the year we were in a veterinary practice working on our nursing progress log and hours"

❓ When asked about being involved in any clubs or activities out of studying:

🗨️"I was part of the student council so helped organise and host events, I got to go to Brighton for a huge congress held there. It was great fun and really helped meet different people who were on the different courses, which helped me gain in confidence"

🚀 Heather's passion and love for the Veterinary Nursing Industry continues to develop and grow, and has now:

✅ Completed a certificate in medical nursing through Improve International, published in the Vet Nurse Times

🖥️ Hoping to undertake a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in internal medicine next year after 3 years in the medicine department.

👩‍🏫 Started to lecture for The Ralph Referral Hospital and would love to continue to develop that further

Heather finishes by sharing advice on anyone thinking about studying to to be vet Nurse

⭐"If you have a passion for caring for animals, helping them heal, supporting carers and working within a team of like minded individuals then this is definitely the course for you"

🛫 Every year Veterinary Nursing students at WCUC have the opportunity to travel to South Africa to undertake a field trip of a lifetime.

🦏 This year the students will be visiting Waterberg region/Limpopo province. A 35,000ha privately managed game reserve with 12,000ha privately managed conservation area and home to the Big 5, as well as many other species.

🏕️ Not only will the students have the chance to learn in a practical setting and gain invaluable experience to take them forward in their own studies, but also stay on the reserve itself, wake up to see Rhinos, Elephants and more outside the tent!

💡As well as gaining an understanding of wildlife research and management that govern veterinary practices on the reserve the students will learn more about a wildlife vets role and responsibilities. The trips expose participants to behind the scenes wildlife conservation and veterinary work, including immobilisation and capture techniques used for various wildlife species and rhino protection through Veterinary Management Conservation Research.

💬 “My top highlight from the course so far has got to be the trip to South Africa Summer 2022. During this time we got to spend two incredible weeks at Welgevonden Research Camp where we saw some amazing animals, assisted with rhino conservation and got hands-on with a Cape Buffalo and a White Rhino when assisting the veterinary team with interventions. I even got to ear notch one of the rhinos for identification and to contribute to anti-poaching efforts. It was honestly the trip of a lifetime and I will never forget it!"

🐱 To continue our support of BVNA Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month we are shining a light on studying for a Vet Nursing Degree here at Warwickshire College and University Centre.

🎓 Studying for a degree at WCUC will open doors for you. As well as gaining a degree which is accredited by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) you will combine academic study and occupational competence.

💡 Students will work in a veterinary practice throughout their course, gaining the clinical skills needed to become a registered veterinary nurse.

💉 Students begin on the BSc (Hons) and the FdSc with introductory nursing modules, as well as breeding and nutrition, progressing onto advanced nursing, anaesthesia, surgical nursing and diagnostics. In the third year, there are opportunities to specialise in specific optional modules to give students experience of alternative avenues that they may experience in the wider veterinary industry.

🔬 As the FdSc is a three year course, students will also undertake a reflective research project, while the BSc students study research design in preparation for their dissertation, undertaken in their fourth year.

📈 Other fourth year modules for the BSc students allow further exploration of specific disciplines within the veterinary nursing profession such as practice management and companion animal behaviour.

⭐ WCUC also offer the BSc (Hons) top-up - a one-year, progression award for those who have completed the FdSc Veterinary Nursing or a related course with RCVS-recognised veterinary nursing competences up to Level 5. It offers students the opportunity to build upon their existing knowledge and is ideal for those wishing to pursue a senior management role or move into teaching and/or research. Top-up students integrate with existing BSc (Hons) students, studying the same modules, all at Level 6.

📜 At graduation all vet nursing graduands pledge allegiance to the disciplines and behaviours, which uphold the values within the industry. This forms strong foundations for each and everyone of our graduates and provides employable industry ready students who are ready to succeed in Veterinary Nursing.
