People never left their villages during the Middle Ages!
People during the Middle Ages weren't intelligent!

๐Ÿ‘‚ Youโ€™ve probably heard it before: medieval people thought the Earth was flat, they never left their villages and there werenโ€™t any new ideas because medieval people were not as intelligent as we are today!

๐Ÿ˜• Students can often have many misconceptions about the past. It can be difficult to challenge this mindset.

๐ŸŽฏ Why is this important for GCSE or A-Level history? Because we need to ensure students donโ€™t judge past societies and events by life today. They need a more realistic understanding of the past which moves away from simple assumptions.

Critical thinking is a historianโ€™s best tool!

โ“ Did you know General MacArthur was sacked as the commander of the US forces during the Korean War partly because he favoured the use of nuclear weapons?

๐Ÿช– General MacArthur, at the age of 70, was appointed the commander of UN forces in Korea.

๐Ÿ“… When North Korea invaded South Korea in June 1950, South Korea appealed to the UN for support. The UN passed Resolution 84 which committed UN forces to pushing North Korean Peopleโ€™s Army (NKPA) out of South Korea, back over the 38th parallel that divided North and South.

๐Ÿšซ General MacArthur supported the idea of completely removing the communists from North Korea. He even advocated invading China and using nuclear weapons!

๐Ÿคฏ This went far beyond the mandate of UN Resolution 84.

๐Ÿ˜Ÿ President Truman, worried that this would spark a much wider conflict and the possibility of nuclear war, replaced General MacArthur with General Ridgway. Truman favoured containment of Communism.

If youโ€™re feeling overwhelmed, hereโ€™s the good news: youโ€™re not alone, and you can turn it around. Iโ€™ve helped countless students tackle mock exams with these simple strategies:

๐Ÿ•’ Plan your time: Break revision into small chunks.
๐ŸŽฏ Focus on key topics: Prioritize high-weighted areas.
โœ๏ธ Practice writing answers: Itโ€™s not just about what you knowโ€”itโ€™s about how you show it.

Many of my students are preparing for their January mocks. Together, weโ€™ve focused on effective revision techniques, tackled past papers, and refined their exam skills.

๐Ÿ’ช The result? Confidence. My students know what to expect and feel ready to face their exams with a clear plan.

๐Ÿ”ข In GCSE and A-Level History, using tier two and three vocabulary means using the specialist terminology that is subject specific. It is like speaking the language of historians.

๐Ÿ“œ Whether itโ€™s โ€œappeasement,โ€ โ€œindustrialisation,โ€ or โ€œtotalitarianism,โ€ these words donโ€™t just show knowledge - they demonstrate our ability to think critically and analyse events like a historian. It demonstrates an understanding of more complex concepts and these words are vital for building knowledge and understanding.

โœ”๏ธ Examiners look for precise use of these terms. A well-placed term can transform a good essay into a top-grade answer. It shows that you understand not just what happened, but why it mattered. Using the correct tier two and three words in the correct context adds depth to a studentโ€™s answer.
