We presented today to last year Deakin Medical Students…

Here was some of the feedback and learning they received.

🌸 [I learnt about the] vast disparity in treatment and management for people with facial disfigurement. That it takes simple professional steps to correct the issue.

🌟 I had very little knowledge of facial disfigurement before this session. This gave me a good overview and answered some questions I realised I had, as well as provided me with resources for future research.

💥 [I learnt] about my inherent biases and how to be more aware of these to change my behaviours

🌈 Fantastic session! Incredibly important for students and junior medical staff Others need to hear this, off this PD again. It would be nice if the program could be a bit longer and incorporates more approaches to addressing people with facial disfigurement or video examples of positive engagement with people with facial disfigurement.

Thank you for those who attended today. Thank you to Deakin University who had Karibu Anawim present.

Here at Karibu Anawim we provide 1:1 counselling with those who choose to continue on The Way of Victory in their lives. Sometimes we get stuck... (who hasn’t)... and we all need a bit of one on one time.

Our difference is that our Counsellors have the lived experience behind them so DO know what it is like. Everyone’s journey on The Way of Victory is unique... some challenges are universal.

We welcome you to have a look under this Nurture heading if you yourself live with facial disfigurement www.karibuanawim.com

Our Story

Welcome to The Way of Victory!

WHO ARE WE?

We specialise in providing counselling and training to people who live with a facial disfigurement. We see adults and children. We see parents living with facial disfigurement with children who do and do not as well as parents whose children who live with a facial disfigurement. We cater for sibling issues within families.

Our counsellors have personally experienced what it is like to ‘do life’ with a facial disfigurement. We believe this sets us apart from other organisations. It is our endeavour that you find us able to empathise, assist and connect with great understanding.

At Karibu Anawim we are here to help you navigate “The Way of Victory” in your journey. We take a holistic approach to assist you with your emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing.

ACQUIRED or BIRTHED?

Whether your facial disfigurement was acquired through a traumatic event or you were born with your distinctiveness… it doesn’t matter! We welcome you to “The Way of Victory”. We know that each person has a different story and we see you as a beautiful unique person. It is our privilege to support you in your journey.

PARENTS

Here at Karibu Anawim we welcome parents on “The Way of Victory” through acceptance of having a child with a facial disfigurement. This is a very personal journey and no ‘one size fits all’.
Parenting with a facial disfigurement raises new issues in our life journey that affects our children.

Unique parenting issues arise with facially disfigured parents this continues at every stage of life a child encounters, especially during the early years when your child is forming their own peer group.

Our personally experienced and qualified counsellors do understand and can assist with giving you the tools to model your own healthy sense of self, including self-esteem and body image. Role modelling is a powerful tool in your toolkit. We help you in equipping your child with the skills such as gaining:
• Healthy self esteem
• Healthy body image
• Ability to explain disfigurement
• Resilience.

OUR SERVICES

We provide:
• One on one counselling
o Face to face
o Skype
• Small group counselling
• E-mail support maybe considered on a case-by-case basis after initial consultation
• Public speakers for your next event.

It is our belief and desire to raise the profile of facial discrimination through education. We are available to speak about the daily issues confronting people who are facially disfigured. We know education dispels fear so the truth can be seen.

COUNSELLOR TRAINING & CREDENTIALS

All our counsellors are fully qualified and are members of the Australian Counselling Association. We have counsellors that are registered teachers with experience in both mainstream and special education.
