It was great to hear all about the Nepal expedition in yesterday’s assembly. 38 intrepid students from Years 10 and 11 along with 4 staff spent 17 days in Nepal this summer with Global Action. They completed a 5 day trek in the foothills of the Himalayas, They spent time sightseeing and immersing themselves in Nepalese religion and culture. They also visited 3 NGOs and spent 4 days volunteering on the Pokhara Drinking Water Project and at a local school.

Everybody was taken out of their comfort zone and gained so much from the experience.

On Wednesday, the Sixth Form girls played at Wolverhampton Grammar School’s annual Christmas netball tournament. Our 1st team were runners up and crowned overall fancy dress team winners with the best individual fancy dress awarded to Father Christmas! Lots of fun was had by all. ⛄️❄️🎄

While sports fixtures across the country were cancelled over the weekend, the English Schools Cross Country finals have only ever been cancelled once due to snow!

On Saturday, 2nd December, 10 pupils from Adams competed in the finals held in Woodbridge, Suffolk. Both the Junior - Years 7 & 8 - and Intermediate - Years 9 & 10 - teams had qualified by finishing 3rd in the regional finals in November. Schools travelled from as far away as Cornwall and Cumbria to compete. The temperature crept above freezing in time for the races, so the ground was soft enough to run on safely.

Ian W. in year 8 put in a very strong performance to finish in 8th place out of 160 runners - a tremendous achievement. Jonathan Y. in year 7 finished 37th. The Intermediate team mainly featured runners in Year 9 at the lower age range of the category. First home for Adams’ was William H. in 37th.

The future of cross country running at Adams is looking bright!

Yesterday we welcomed 25 Year 5 pupils and their teachers from Newport CE Junior School, Muxton Primary School, Lilleshall Primary School, Haberdashers' Castle House School and Tibberton C.E. Primary School for a visit to our English Department. Pupils took part in a creative writing workshop led by English teacher Miss Edwards which focused on the question “How can I create a chilling and gripping opening to a narrative?”. Pupils began by describing a spooky setting based on a picture, created their own character, and then learnt how to use a writing formula to gradually build up their writing skills to create their chilling and gripping opening. Miss Edwards was so impressed by everyone’s work and would love to see any finished stories based on today’s workshop if you would like to send them in to our Outreach Department!

A team from Adams CCF (RAF section) attended the regional Royal Air Squadron Trophy at Royal Air Force Cosford at the weekend. The team took part in shooting, first aid, aircraft recognition and a drill sequence tasks. A man down, they pulled together and worked incredibly hard in every category.

Last week we competed in the West Central Regional Finals of the English Schools Cross Country Cup, held at Bromsgrove School. The boys performed exceptionally well and both our Junior and Intermediate teams finished 3rd thus qualifying for the National Finals which take place in Suffolk in December. The teams beat off tough competition from the best cross country runners of six counties. This is only the second time that two teams from Haberdashers’ Adams have reached the finals and we can’t wait to go up against the best in the country..!

Over half term, 42 Upper Sixth Physics students flew to Geneva for 3 days to visit CERN, the world’s largest particle physics research facility. The morning of day 2 was spent viewing the interactive permanent exhibitions of the visitor centre. After lunch in the Big Bang Café, students enjoyed a lecture and guided tour of CERN’s research and engineering facilities led by a resident CERN scientist. Students also enjoyed some free time exploring the sights and culture of Geneva.

Pupils and staff marked Remembrance Day yesterday with a moving school assembly that included a reading of ‘Arms and the Boy’ by Wilfred Owen and some beautiful musical performances. It was an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifice made by those former pupils in whose footsteps we tread as the names of every Old Novaportan who lost their life in the service of their country during WWI and WWII were read out.

Our Headstart programme has returned for 2023 with the first session delivered at St Luke's Catholic Primary School in Trench, Telford, by Mrs Hickey. In today’s session the group discussed what it means to be part of a team and came up with their own rules for their sessions this term, then practiced their talking and listening skills. As part of our Outreach programme, working with local primary schools, Headstart aims to develop mental health and fitness alongside enriching and promoting confidence, self-esteem and communication through encouraging teamwork within a safe and fun environment

A-level geographers are enjoying the chance to extend their learning by attending monthly lectures put on by the North Staffordshire branch of the Association. The lectures take place at Staffordshire University and give students additional case study material along with experiencing a lecture in a university lecture theatre by an expert in their field.

Each year about 5% of our leavers take up a variety of apprenticeships at prestigious companies. Yesterday, ONs Nihal Dhillon (Class of 2019) and Charlie Nicol (Class of 2021) who both joined JCB as engineering apprentices returned to Adams. They spoke to Lower Sixth on the benefits of an apprenticeship and then gave one to one guidance to those in Upper Sixth making applications. ON Olivia Bagley (Class of 2023) is the latest leaver to join JCB on a business degree apprenticeship - congratulations.

Three of our cadets attended the RAFAC Regional Activity Day at RAF Cosford last weekend. They took part in Leadership, First Aid, Space, Cyber and Drone challenges. It was a real achievement to come 3rd in the Space activity given they were competing against teams of four cadets, were the first CCF to ever take part in the event (which has previously only been attended by ATC units) and Space is not a significant component of the CCF programme. Congratulations!

House Gymnastics Part 1 took place yesterday. Well done to all the boys in Years 7 and 8 who took part and worked hard on learning their routines. Part 2 will take place at the end of the term. Gymnastics is part of the core PE rotation in Years 7 and 8 - it encourages increased fitness, flexibility, strength and balance.

The SCiP (Service Children’s Progression Alliance) recently invited our service children to a day at Harper Adams University. The event enabled service children to bond with one another over shared experiences, receive support and advice on the unique challenges they face. The boys took part in a poetry workshop, played tag archery with the MOD and participated in a sports performance session with Staffordshire University.

The Telford Schools Cross Country League has drawn to an end. Thirty-nine boys from Haberdashers' Adams competed in the four races. The final was held at Idsall School, Shifnal last week. Our Year 9 team were convincing winners of their age category in the league, winning all four races. Individual success was achieved by Jonathan in Year 7, finishing 1st or 2nd in all of his races and Ian in Year 8 who won all four races. In year 9, Consistent top 10 performances by Jack, William, Dylan and Arthur showed how strong Adams’ is in this age group. The next cross-country fixture will be the second round of the English Schools Competition in November.

The pupils rotated through five workshops - a drumming circle, an escape room, a CCF activity, a quiz and team building games. After lunch they all took part in a scavenger hunt. The vision for the day, organisation and ex*****on all came from the Adams Front Team and NGHS Head Girl Team – thank you so much for the hard work and effort you put into making the day a success.
