Tickets can be purchased (£10 & £5) from our school reception for performances on Wednesday 13th, Thursday 14th & Friday 15th July 2022 - 7.30pm in the Hamilton Hall. Hope you can join us.
Two days left to register for our next Year 7 Entrance Test!

If your son is currently in Year 5 and you are considering applying for a Year 7 place for September 2023, please make sure you complete our online registration form by 4pm this Thursday, 7th July. More details including a link to the form can be found on our website here: https://bit.ly/3tKmGH8
Our Year 7 pupils have been enjoying some' local' history to support their classroom learning with a visit to Wenlock Priory, to see a fine example of a medieval monastery and Ludlow Castle, which was one of the most important castles in England and where Henry VIII’s brother died. We are so pleased that they have been able to enjoy some good weather too.
We are looking to recruit an ICT Support Assistant and a Health and First Aid Administrator. Full details for both posts can be found on our website: https://www.adamsgs.uk/our-community/vacancies
A little surprise gift for our new Year 7 pupils as their Induction Day comes to an end. We hope you've all had a wonderful day and enjoy reading this fabulous book of adventure, fun and friendship over the summer holidays. See you all in September!
It's our Year 7 Induction Day and we are thrilled to be able to spend time with all of our new pupils so that they know what to expect when they join us in September. Welcome to Adams everyone and welcome to your new School Houses: Darwin (blue); Owen (red); Sa'adu (purple); Talbot (black and white); and Webb (green). Huge thanks to our Sixth Form Front Team and Form Prefects for keeping everyone busy and running the day so brilliantly - you've been amazing!
Our Charities Committee has been busy putting posters around school to advertise our last m***i day of the year - Tuesday 5th July in support of our local food bank as we hear their stocks are running low. With the summer holidays looming, they are in desperate need of donations so that they can continue to help low-income families during the six-week holiday. We will have collection points around school from Monday and would be very grateful for donations of non-perishable items such as food in jars, tins, cereals, biscuits, squash and toiletries, all of which will really help to make a difference. Many thanks in advance for any donations you can make.
A big day for two of our Year 7 boarders Jiawei & Kane as they have just harvested their potato crop for the Newport Show potato-growing competition for schools. The potatoes will be weighed & displayed at the Show on Saturday 9th July in the Education Marquee and the results will be announced at 11am on the day. The winning school will receive £100 for school gardening equipment. Good luck Team Adams!
There has been lots of fun at tonight's rehearsal for our forthcoming 'Night at the Musicals' evening - Tuesday 19th July at 7.30pm. We hope you will join us. We also have our Hamilton Concert at 7.30pm on Wednesday 20th July with performances from the Orchestra, Show Band and Choirs. Tickets for both events can be purchased from the Music Department - £5 per ticket. For more information, please email: [email protected]
We are so excited that pupils are able to enjoy some school trips once more! The weather has been beautiful for our A-Level geography field trip to Cwm Idwal Nature Reserve, where pupils have been spending the week collecting data for their non-exam assessments & looking at glaciation and urban environments. Our junior boarders are off to Shell Island this weekend for some camping fun at the seaside and next week our Years 8 and 9 pupils are off to Berlin for the week while Years 9 and Year 10 pupils are going to Paris. We've also got some day trips over the next two weeks for History, Biology and English plus a CCF Summer Camp. Very exciting - we can't wait to share them all with you.
Our end of year production is fast approaching and tickets are on sale now!

We hope you will join us for 'The Crucible' - a fictional play based on the Salem witch trials which took place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Tickets can be purchased from our school reception for performances on Wednesday 13th, Thursday 14th and Friday 15th July 2022. We can't wait to welcome everyone once more to a live performance so please help to spread the word.
Our Summer Camp partner Activate Camps is offering two free places at one of their summer camps, including our Haberdashers' Adams Summer Camp - Monday 25th July to Friday 29th July. Find out more below.
Huge congratulations to Year 7 pupil Rishi Patel on receiving a commendation in this year's Anthea Bell Prize for Young Translators Competition.
This relatively new competition, inspired by the life and work of the great translator Anthea Bell OBE (an English translator of literary works, including children's literature, from French, German and Danish), is held by The Queen's College, University of Oxford, to promote language learning across the UK.
Over 14,000 students from 260 schools took part in the competition task this year with schools having to submit their top five entries for each of the competition levels. The final 3,200 entries were judged by a team of 36 undergraduates and professional translators.
We are delighted to discover that Rishi made it through to the final round, receiving a commendation for his translation of the German poem about wind and weather by Jürg Schubiger (Wind und Wetter). Great news, many congratulations Rishi.
We are currently recruiting for the following two positions:

Teaching Assistant - part-time post, 30 hours per week, term-time only. More details are available here: bit.ly/3QhmZoC

School Counsellor - 5½ hours per week, one day per week (no specific day). More details are available here: bit.ly/3xMak5M

Don't forget to regularly check our website if you are interested in joining us at Haberdashers' Adams: https://www.adamsgs.uk/our-community/vacancies
This year our Year 8 pupils have been busy using their language skills in a real-life situation by sharing time with some students from EVAU Siegen - a Grammar School in Germany, near Cologne. During their half-hour sessions, they have been able to share information about school and themselves and now hope to build on this by creating either a video clip, a voice-over PowerPoint presentation or an electronic book telling a story about our culture. Good luck 8O.
We hope these photos will bring a small welcome break to revision for our Class of 2022. The high resolution images will be available on our school Flickr page on Friday. Best of luck in your A-levels and welcome to our alumni network - more details to follow soon!

Charities Week Day 1 Round Up:

Kicking off Charities Week, a group of Upper Sixth, walked 20 miles from Wolverhampton to Adams. Setting off at 2am, the wind and rain made the walk extra challenging with the tow path very muddy, such that one of the group slipped into the canal! Some questionable map reading led to an extra 3 miles and a late arrival to school! £3.6k has already been made in aid of Cancer Research. 🚶‍♀️🚶🚶‍♂️

Many students spent the weekend baking and brought in their wares to Big School Library. The cakes were judged by the Charities Committee before break when they were sold to staff and students to raise funds. M***i theme today was Pyjama Day so onesies, oodies and tartan were in abundance!

Head of Geography 🌎 We are looking for an outstanding teacher to lead the department and teach across a wide range of year groups. The successful applicant will have to be passionate about the role and about their teaching. We also wish to appoint someone who is interested in being involved in the wide range of extra-curricular activities that are an important part of the life of this school.

More details can be found on our website: https://www.adamsgs.uk/our-community/vacancies

We got World Book Day celebrations off to an early start yesterday with a visit from an author who knows Haberdashers’ Adams very well! Catherine Randall, daughter of Adams Headmaster David Taylor, literally grew up in the school. Catherine gave an engaging talk to the Year 8s on her first book ‘The White Phoenix’. A historical novel set during the Great Fire of London, it was nominated for the Young Quills Award in 2021. Lots of fun activities taking place in Big School Library today. 📕🔥

Year 8 enjoyed an engaging Eco Workshop on the afternoon of House Music. Following a briefing on environmental issues and how they affect schools, the year split into their form groups with each form focusing on a different sub-topic. Each form then chose their best group and that group presented back to the whole of Year 8. The students came up with some great ideas - using the canteen waste food for biofuel, installing a ground source heat pump at Longford, covering the school in moss panels to help heat regulation, oxygen production and biodiversity. Now for action…🌱🌳

We are looking to recruit an outstanding teacher who can teach both Mathematics and Chemistry and is interested in being involved in the wide range of extra-curricular activities that are an important part of the life of this Haberdashers' Adams.

What a night! The competition was stiff so huge congratulations to Darwin for taking home the much coveted House Music Cup. Big thank you to everyone involved in putting on this incredible event. Enjoy a well deserved half term break!

Talbot & Darwin are head to head! Will one of them go on to win House Music or will another house come from behind…

Fantastic to see ON Corporal Chris Beal, a trombonist with HM Royal Marines Band Lympstone. Chris, Class of 2010, was a key member of Adams' CCF Marching Band, and taking part in band courses during his Sixth Form years inspired him to join HM Royal Marines Band Service. Yesterday, 36 students from Haberdashers’ Adams took part in a workshop run by the Royal Marines Band, along with students from Burton Borough and Newport Girls High School. Will any follow in Chris' footsteps? 🎼🥁🎺

🧠 'Brain Day' fun fact - a human brain weighs approximately 1.4kg. Incredible learning taking place today by our budding biologists, psychologists, sociologists, and neuroscientists thanks to Dr Guy Sutton - Gray Matters

The Charities Committee are holding a M***i Day on Tuesday 14th February to raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee Turkey-Syria Earthquake Appeal. With over 21,000 dead and 100,000s displaced the need to take action to help those affected is urgently required. Fantastic afternoon of fiercely competitive rugby matches yesterday as our Houses competed for the Smedley Cup. Full set of House Rugby results will be confirmed next week but it's no secret who won yesterday's honours...! 🏉🏆

Teenagers have long frustrated adults with apparent black and white thinking, egocentric thoughts, irrational behaviour and a focus on the present! But can raging hormones account for such behaviour and is the teenage brain really an immature structure?

Please do join us for what will be a fascinating lecture on The Teenage Brain. Neuroscientist, Dr Guy Sutton, is being hosted by Haberdashers' Adams Social Sciences department on 13th February. Dr Sutton will spend the day teaching our Psychology students and is offering a talk to parents in the evening. To book, email [email protected]

Thursday lunchtime is Disassembling Design time in DT. Year 9 pupils carefully dismantle household appliances, such as an iron, or automotive components, such as a starter motor or brake caliper.

Their aim is to investigate how they work and then create incredible exploded displays to demonstrate the appliance’s moving parts and how they fit together. Many specialist tools and equipment are used at all stages to aid the careful deconstruction process.

The Year 9s will shortly start mentoring the Year 8s who are eligible to join the club from next term. 🪛🔧🔨🪚🔩⚙️

Celebrating student success: Year 9 student, Sam Hollands, recently competed at the Shropshire Chess Congress. Sam, shared first place in the Minor section of the competition – an especially impressive performance considering it was his first ever weekend tournament, a 3-day event with 146 competitors across 4 sections including an international master in the Open section. Sam won his first three games of the section before drawing with top seed in round four. But he won his final round game to ensure a share of the top prize. Congratulations!

Yesterday, 45 year 10 students visited Birmingham Symphony Hall to listen to a series of lectures by top scientists. Lectures included 'Time-travel - fact or fiction?' by Prof Jim Al-Khalili and 'How the Zebra got its Stripes' by Professor Andrea Sella. All of the speakers were thoroughly entertaining and inspired our young pupils about careers in STEM. #FutureScientists

Higher & Further Education Fair

Over 30 of the UK’s leading universities and local further education providers exhibited at our first Higher & Further Education Fair. A fantastic opportunity for pupils from Haberdashers’ Adams and Newport Girls’ High School to gain advice about courses that match their career ambitions or interests. As well as local universities, such as Keele and Harper Adams, we were pleased to welcome representatives from those further afield including Cambridge, Durham, Exeter, Newcastle, Warwick and Cardiff universities. Local providers included Telford and Shrewsbury College and North Shropshire College.

Yesterday afternoon was our Y11 Options Forum. A-level and AS-level subject teachers were on hand to talk about their subjects, covering areas such as course content, teaching methods and career options. Exciting times ahead...!

25 children from 5 local primary schools enjoyed a creative writing workshop today. The children were tasked with crafting a spooky, mysterious piece of writing, after learning all about how we can work with language to create descriptive pieces. The results were spine chilling!

During the autumn term, Year 7 took part in a Languages Spelling Bee competition, challenging themselves to learn 50 words, and how to spell them, in both French and German. A huge congratulations to our winners, who flexed their linguistic muscles to the maximum during a tense competition.

10 winners in each language managed to successfully get through to the next round, where they will compete to become the school champions, before taking on the best in the regional championships and hopefully the nationals!

Owen wins Year 9 House Entrepreneurship Competition. Each team was given £50 and challenged to make a profit while also fulfilling criteria on originality, participation and promotion of their enterprise. The winning team, 9O, hired Hamilton Hall to screen the England vs Iran World Cup Football match.

Congratulations to 9O who fulfilled all the criteria and made the largest profit!
