Our friends from Countryside Management at Stafford College have shared some photos with us from last week's visit. They were a great help and seemed to have enjoyed themselves :-)
A massive thank you to the students and staff from Countryside Management at Stafford College who have helped us to rebuild 3 sections of dry stone wall and resurface 86m of bridleway at Tegg's Nose Country Park today! What a really hard working and enthusiastic bunch!

Level three first year students enjoyed a day in a local woodland taking part in transect and quadrat surveys.

Game Management 17/04/2014

The first year countryside students spent a day last week working with a gamekeeper on a local estate. We spent the day extending the pheasant pen ready for the poults to arrive in late summer!! The practical was part of the game management unit.


So far this week Ive seen my first brood of mallard on the river Sow, my first swallow at Seighford Lakes and my first orange tip butterfly at Chasewater. Anyone heard a cuckoo yet????

Next year’s countryside students had a cracking day as they took part in the Stafford College Countryside Taster day. We spent the day working with the SCC Countryside staff and volunteers at Chase Water Park to erect some new post and rail fencing. We also had saw three Red Deer!!! The next taster days are in June. Our first year students spent last Thursday at Pirehill Farm undertaking some woodland management work and planting a new woodland as part of one of their Game Management units. Over 100 native trees planted and the rearing pen ready for the pheasants!

This week our second year students have been out at Marton Heath Trout Pools undertaking freshwater surveys. Using the float tube to undertake these surveys was the highlight of the day!!


Visited Kingsmead Marsh today with our first year countryside students and watched 8 Teal flight in onto the recently opened drains. A great sight and good to see our conservation work paying off. What followed next was unbelievable as the peregrine falcon swooped in after them!!!!! Has anyone else seen the pair of peregrines now in Stafford?

Andy Taylor and his students from Stafford College have completed 4 weeks of hedgelaying at Kingsbury Water Park. Here's the story from start to finish and thanks to Andy and his team for a cracking job.


The Peregrine Falcon seems to be back in Stafford. We have seen it this afternoon hunting over wilkinsons!!

The Countryside Management Yr 1 and Yr 2 groups visited Countryside Training & Tree Management Ltd this week for a Woodland Week. The students learned to operate specialist equipment and experienced charcoal making, which was great experience for all. A big thank you to Alan and Jackie for allowing us to spend time in this professional working environment.

The river keeper 20/01/2014

The level 3 countryside students spent two days working with the river keeper Andy Heath on a stretch of the river Dove as part of their river management unit. They undertook river surveys and completed practical work along this beautiful stretch of river.

The Roaches 20/01/2014

The level 3 countryside management second year students spent two weeks restoring a section of drystone wall at the Roaches working alongside former countryside student and now Assistant Warden Eva Martin. A good first attempt at what was a difficult section of wall.

Kingsbury Water Park 06/12/2013

The 2nd year Countryside Management students spent the last two weeks working with the Rangers at Kingsbury Water Park. They installed a new footpath to the commemorative bench onsite before erecting a range of signs across the park. Another good job! Well done!!

The year two countryside students have just refurbished some steps at the Trentham Estate working with the Estate Team. Great job on what is a well used path!!

Haddon Estate 22/11/2013

First year Countryside Students have spent the last two weeks on the Haddon Estate looking at river management. They had two great days with river keeper Warren Slaney and took part in a wide range of river restoration works. Two brilliant days in a beautiful part of the world!!!

The 2nd year countryside students spent a wet and windy Tuesday out with staff and volunteers from SCC Countryside service putting in stiles near Uttoxeter. Big thanks to Baz and the volunteers for their help on the day. Four new stiles were installed!!

Stafford College 25/10/2013

1st year level 3 countryside students did their bit for bees this week. They planted the grounds around Stafford College with with help from Kate Dewy SWT and Stafford Bee Group. Students planted verbena, great hyacinth, field scabious and aquilegia all plants which bees love. Looking forward to them coming into flower next year!

Marton Heath Trout Pools 18/10/2013

The first year level 3 countryside students have spent the last two weeks at Marton Heath Trout Pools in Cheshire undertaking fishery management work. This week we rebuilt several pegs on Dons Pool and cleared a large area of small alder saplings and some large dog wood. A great days work.

Trentham Estate -fencing 18/10/2013

Level 3 Countryside students have spent the last three weeks at Trentham Estate working with the Estate Team as part of their Estate Skills unit. The students erected 100m of stock fencing as the first part of the HLS scheme on site. They also spent a day resurfacing a section of footpath around the estate lake. Two cracking jobs on this beautiful estate!!

Year two on their first visit to the Green Wood Craft Centre run by the Small Woods Association. A fantastic day, Neill the tutor there was awesome.

Stiperstones 03/10/2013

Year one visited the Stiperstones and took part in a survey of the different habitats there. A great day apart from the weather!

Practical at Seighford Lakes 27/09/2013

L3 year 1 Countryside students started their fishery management unit with a practical at Seighford Lakes. Working with Fishery Manager James Perks the students worked on the Railway Pool to clear the pegs and open up at footpath. We should see a few fish caught on this side now!!!

Prees Heath 26/09/2013

Year one students had a great day with Warden Steve Lewis from the Butterfly Conservation. Prees Heath is a fascinating site, the group learnt about the symbiotic relationship of the black ant and the silver studded blue butterfly and the careful management of the heath.
