✍🏽 Today in the Creative Writing Club, we resumed from our half-term break! And we talked about the four storytelling concepts, and focused on Setting.

Setting is concerned with where and when the story is happening. I got my students to think about why the Setting in their story is important, and how they can use it to really make their story come alive. Settings could be real or fictional, past, present or future. My brilliant students came up with fascinating ideas for their story settings - from magical worlds complete with fairies and dragons, to futuristic cities where everything is controlled by well-programmed robots and flying cars.

"What would I do if I found a bag of money on the street?" We had fun brainstorming our points, then outlining the essay into a clear format, and writing a strong conclusion. It was interesting to see what my students came up with. ⁠

The Creative Writing Club is for young aspiring authors (aged 8+) who enjoy writing, and want to learn how to write interesting and intriguing stories, while having fun! If you have a budding writer living with you, or you want to encourage a young person to explore and improve their creative writing skills, then this will be of great interest to you!

They will gain confidence in their own creative abilities, be able to brainstorm different ideas on various topics, improve their spelling, grammar and punctuation, and become creators of their own content, instead of just consumers.

Each month, they will work on writing both fiction and non-fiction, and become versatile at writing in many different genres. At the end of each class, students will be encouraged to read their work to the class, and their peers will give them feedback. They take the feedback on board and use it to improve on future assignments. Class size is kept small, so that each student has a chance to read their work, and receive feedback from the class and the tutor.

Last Friday, I went to spend the day with the Year 10 girls at Sarah Bonnell School 🏫 in Stratford, for their BOSS DAY.

It was an opportunity for them to meet people who are working in various jobs, get to chat with them about their work, careers and options after school. We also got them thinking about creating their CVs, preparing for interviews and networking.

It was a very interesting experience and I enjoyed meeting the 14 and 15 year olds, engaging with them and answering their questions. 😊👧🏽👩🏽🧑🏾‍🦱👩🏽‍🏫👩🏽‍💻🤵🏽‍♀️

I am thrilled to announce the official publication of "Amaka in New York", a debut novel 📖 by my youngest client - 10-year-old author, Olachi Okoroafor. 🥳

The story is a compelling tale of a young girl’s struggle to adapt to a new life in New York City, after her mother had to relocate to the United States.

The book is set predominantly in New York City, and it features a cast of interesting characters – Amaka, the main character, her mum, her grandmother, and a whole lot of new faces in a new place. It also includes beautiful illustrations of the characters, the scenery, and recognisable landmarks of the city.

The book is aimed at young readers aged between 7 to 12 years old, and it has excellent reading and discussion points for parents and guardians too.
