Quainton Windmill

Quainton Windmill

Comments

As some of you already know, I’ve got a bit of a thing for . I’ve been known to insist on adventure detours when I spot a windmill in the distance. We’ve been going to Buckinghamshire Railway Centre for years and have seen Quainton Windmill in the distance but it took us so long to actually get up close and personal to this beautiful windmill. In fact we saw it a few times from fields above the village during the various lockdowns and I’ve wanted to get inside ever since. Finally I got my wish and we visited on Sunday. It didn’t disappoint. It’s open Sundays from 10-12.30, it’s free but please make a donation if you visit, and kids receive a free certificate to celebrate climbing the 70 steps to the top floor.
The volunteers are knowledgable and the views across the Buckinghamshire countryside are beautiful. And yes of course we ended up back at afterwards for more steam loco fun.
I’ve got a couple of fairly local windmills I want to visit over the next couple of months but I’m always looking for recommendations.
Some pictures following the delightful and interesting visit I made yesterday (9th June 2022) How lucky was I to find that the Mill was open!

Thanks to all for your time, especially to Nick for his extremely interesting talk about the mill and its history. And the photo opportunities were marvellous
Great to be able to see such a sight while out running
Sails going up day 1.
The refurbishment is coming on in leaps and bounds. The team of volunteers are doing a brilliant job. Well done to all concerned ..... and the mill is open again for visitors on Sunday mornings.
The mill is open again for visitors on Sunday mornings, when you can see the team at work, or drinking tea! The volunteers are making great progress with the restoration. Looking forward to the next big step which is installing the new head frame and dome.

Quainton Windmil is a historic windmill in the village of Quainton, Buckinghamshire.

The six-storey brick tower mill was built 1830–32, is one of the most visible buildings in the village.

This shows Quainton Windmill with its sails set in the traditional mourning position for our beloved Queen Elizabeth II. It is a tradition of windmills in the past, with the bottom sail, off-set to the right. God bless her and God Save the King.

Quainton Windmill is 190 years old and is one of only 40 working windmills in the UK.

Open: Sundays 10 - 12:30

Group visits can be arranged for 10-20 people.

Posted • I have totally fallen in love with Quainton and the history of

We visited a couple of Sundays ago as we wanted to do something local and low key for our wedding anniversary.

The windmill is so impressive and we climbed the 70 steps to the top. A big shout out to the volunteers as they gave us a little history lesson too.

The village itself was so quaint and picture perfect. It was just a shame it was so hot as we would of had a lovely walk around the village otherwise.

If you are stuck for what to do for an occasion or a day out, you can easily spend a couple of hours around the idyllic Quainton.
