A testimonial today from trainee Tom, currently at placement in year 4 in a city school....

"I pretty much knew within a few minutes of my interview that Portsmouth Primary SCITT was the course for me.

The passion and dedication of the training team is second-to-none.... they believe in your potential as a teacher from the outset.

Having worked for 25 years as an accountant, it was a huge decision for me to change my career and go into teaching; it's a huge decision for anyone. If you're one of the people currently pondering that decision right now, then I couldn't recommend Portsmouth Primary SCITT enough. Both Emma and Hayley, along with the rest of the team, go above and beyond in doing all they can to ensure they give you the best chance in moving towards becoming the teacher you one day aspire to be."

Today is World Kindness Day.

To our trainees and ECTs: being kind to yourself counts too! Deliver a random act of kindness to yourself by switching off the laptop a little earlier than normal, enjoying a bar of chocolate, watching something funny to make you belly laugh out loud and most importantly remembering that you can't pour from an empty cup!

Tell us below how you all plan to be kind to yourself this week.

A great time spent this afternoon chatting to people interested in finding out how to become a teacher at the Teach Portsmouth Love to Teach event.

A special thanks to ex trainee, and now second year ECT, Lena Garner, for delivering a great presentation to the audience talking about her experience training with us, and sharing advice regarding how to navigate the application process.

Thanks to those that attended; don't forget to sign up to attend one - or both - of our drop in session using the event links further down the page.

As always, we are happy to follow up with individual messages or calls if you have any questions.

What a day!

It was a very proud Portsmouth SCITT Lead who attended the graduation of the Class of 2023 at Chichester Cathedral today! ๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ˜Š

I had a lovely afternoon catching up with these new teachers and loved hearing them talk proudly about 'their children, TAs and classrooms'.

It was also a privilege to meet their supportive families! As our teachers stepped onto the stage, I think we were all competing for whose face hurt most through smiling with pride. ๐Ÿ˜

I'm equally as proud of the members of the Class of 2023 who couldn't make it to graduation and look forward to catching up with everyone at our 'Jingle Mingle' reunion in December!

Congratulations to you all! ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽ“๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐ŸŽ“

Our trainees are going into schools to start placements tomorrow so we thought we'd share some photos of the past few days.
They enjoyed using the beautiful grounds of our training centre in Stamshaw Junior School for PE, and practising the skills and principles of the Art and DT curriculums with artist Andi Hazelden from St Pauls' Primary School.

Great work everyone. We're looking forward to watching you apply the theory into practice now!

If you're considering applying for a place on our course, but are undecided, hear what some of our current trainees - who are just 5 weeks into their training - have to say....

Danielle says - If youโ€™re doubting or unsure if teaching is for you, make contact with course leaders and take a visit. You donโ€™t just become a trainee teacher you become part of the SCITT family and are surrounded daily by, caring, inspiring and driven individuals. Iโ€™ve never experienced a course quite like SCITT, I look forward to coming everyday! I can't quite believe I'm already writing at masters level and have gained a huge depth of subject knowledge to prepare for school placement.

Shalom says - Go for it! Don't overthink the process, you'll get the best support that is needed throughout your training journey. The programme is well planned out and structured and I'm enjoying every bit of it.

Crystal says - The experts that are brought in to speak are so inspirational.

Emily says - Despite some personal difficulties, I am really enjoying the course and look forward to coming in every day. The team, and the other trainees in the centre have been really supportive.

Today is World Mental Health Day. This year, the theme is 'mental health is a universal human right'.

We started the day off positively with a wellbeing breakfast for our trainees, alongside some mindfulness colouring and puzzles.

How did you mark the day in school?

Who knew what a musical group of trainees we have? ๐ŸŽต

Today we welcomed in the very talented and knowledgeable, Helen Mead from Portsmouth Music Hub.

Helen took the trainees on a fascinating and fun journey through the music curriculum, from Year R to Year 6. She incorporated theory with practice and made every element engaging and memorable.

Thank you Helen! The trainees are looking forward to you returning in the Spring term and will be applying their learning in school in the meantime. ๐ŸŽถ๐Ÿฅ

Some photos to reflect back on another busy, insightful, fun and engaging week in our training centre.

This week has seen our trainees:
- learn about the skills and knowledge of the Primary Science curriculum
- take part in Child Development and Early Years sessions
- engage in their first workshop with the Portsmouth Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS)
- look at behaviour management and work with other adults
- enjoy an amazing shared lunch, cooked from scratch, by one of their very own SCITT trainee group, Shabia!

Thank you to all of our Expert Colleagues for your carefully planned sessions this week.

We hope our trainees remember to continue practicing wellbeing strategies over the weekend, and relax before we start again next week. ๐Ÿ˜Š

We are very lucky to have engaging subject leads, who are experts in their fields, to deliver for us!
We'd like to thank Bex Shore from TSAT - New Horizons Primary School Portsmouth, Sam Cantini from Stamshaw Junior School and Lizzi Noice from Milton Park Primary School for your work with our trainees.

We don't waste time at Portsmouth SCITT!

We returned just last week and our enthusiastic new group of trainees have already had induction sessions, 2 very successful days in schools and an input on the standards, as well as PSHE and Science workshops.

We are lucky enough to share the fantastic grounds at our training centre in Stamshaw Junior School, so here are the trainees outside enjoying some team building exercises as well as making use of enquiry skills during a Science investigation inside.

Keep your eyes on this page to see more of a week in the life of Portsmouth SCITT!

We are looking forward to welcoming our new trainees in tomorrow for the start of a new training year!

We are also thinking about last year's trainees as they start with their own new classes this week. We've heard from many of them over the past few days with pictures and videos of their new classrooms and are sure they will enjoy putting all their training into practice.

We wish you all the best for the coming year and look forward to our new start tomorrow too. :)
