We need to be doing more to educate tellers, shop keepers and members of the public. Don't forget to download our face mask POSTER and if you would like some paper copies please get in touch.

Last weeks class was all about bread, with at least 16 different names for small round pieces of bread that are known as cobs in my part of the world, but also bread rolls and barm cakes featured.

We had good fun with the names, but also recognise sometimes its even tougher when you are lipreading and the name of something is not what you know it by.

This week, its liquid refreshment, what's your favourite drink?

Timeline Photos 22/05/2021

Alongside my #lipreading classes, I have some casual work in event retail. Today was my first day back. Yes, I am the other side of the counter, and we didn't have loud music. However, I am behind a screen, wearing a mask, and really brought home to me how much I rely on lipreading.

If you see me working and need me to remove my mask to to help with communication, please just ask or have an RNID #communication card. Link in the comments.

#hearinglossawareness #hearingloss #retail #hearinglosswontstopme

“There’s a real lack of deaf awareness – especially in shops. I’ve often felt upset and humiliated when people won’t make adjustments to meet my communication needs."

"Before the pandemic, I was able to shop and get by with lipreading (even with the music blaring away!) But now Perspex screens, face coverings and loud music combine to make it nearly impossible to communicate."

"Some people will take their face covering down; but often shop staff refuse to which can be very distressing. I don’t think many retail staff even realise there’s an exemption to the law that means they’re allowed to remove their coverings for people who lipread or that there are other ways to communicate, such as writing things down."

That’s why I think RNID’s new communication card is a great idea. It’s a really simple and practical way for me to explain to someone that I have a hearing loss – while giving them tips on how they can meet my communication needs."

"I have to do everything for myself to make others aware of my communication needs, it’s nice to know that my very own communication card can do some of the work for me.” - Briege

Go to https://rnid.org.uk/mycard to make your communication card if you want a helpful way to ask people to meet your communication needs, just like Briege.
