Update on ending driving tests early in Scotland.

DVSA is ending its COVID-19 policy to finish driving tests early when a candidate fails their test in Scotland from Monday 14 March.
The policy was introduced at the start of the pandemic to reduce the amount of close contact between an examiner and your pupils during a driving test.
Following this change, tests can continue if your pupil has committed a serious or dangerous fault to give them the full-test experience.
Driving tests will only finish early if the driving examiner assesses that your pupil’s driving is so poor it compromises their safety or that of other road users.

Following the Scottish Government’s announcement setting out plans to move beyond level 0 in Scotland on 9 August, we want to explain what these changes mean to driver testing services in Scotland and how these will affect you and your pupils.

Driving lessons: keeping yourself and others safe
There is still a risk you could catch or pass on the virus, even if you are fully vaccinated.

Wearing a face covering:
There continues to be a legal requirement for you and your pupil to wear a face covering during a driving lesson unless either of you are exempt.

Additional theory tests dates in Scotland

From 14 July over 4,500 more theory tests will be available to book on GOV.UK for tests from 19 July up to and including 3 September.

The additional test capacity has been made available following the Scottish Government’s announcement on 13 July that physical distancing rules in Scotland are being relaxed from 2 metres to 1 metre from 19 July in indoor public settings.

We will be writing to all candidates with a theory test booking in Scotland to let them know about the additional test dates, to give them the opportunity to look for an earlier theory test date if they feel ready to take their test sooner.
