🎺 Fanfare s'il vous plaît 🎺 GCSE results are in 🎺
So, so, so proud to announce that each and every one of our students SMASHED their GCSE French by achieving 9s across the board. The highest grade achievable, AKA, la crème de la crème. BRAVO - BRAVO - BRAVO à vous tous, nos étudiants!! You thoroughly deserve to have done so well, as you all worked extremely hard, especially given the challenges of catching up so much lost time due to the pandemic. FÉLICITATIONS - vous êtes vraiment LES MEILLEURS!! (Congratulations - you really are the best!!)

Did you get it right? La bonne réponse=c) j’ai reçu de bonnes notes 😊
This short little phrase certainly packs a punch when it comes to lingo learning points. The top three take-outs are:
Marks: “la note” has several meanings in French: it can mean a mark or score (as it does here), a memo or note, a musical note, or the bill in a restaurant! It is plural in our example - "notes" - because we are translating 'marks' in the plural.
Adjectival placement: it is true that most adjectives come after the noun in French. However, there are four categories where the adjective actually precedes the noun. These categories can be remembered by the simple acronym BAGS:
Beauty e.g. joli(e) (pretty), beau/belle (beautiful)
Age e.g. jeune (young), vieux/vielle (old)
Goodness e.g. bon(ne) (good - as in our examples of 'les bonnes notes' or 'la bonne réponse' - where it means correct, mauvais (bad)
Size e.g. grand(e) (big/tall), petit(e) (small)
“De” vs “des”: The French plural indefinite and partitive article is usually “des”, sometimes translated as ‘some’, but often not directly translated at all in English e.g. des étudiants travailleurs = hard working students, des feuilles vertes = green leaves. So why “de” and not “des” in our example “de bonnes notes”? In the very specific case where, in the plural, an adjective does precede a noun, “des” is contracted down to “de”.
Wowsers! Did you feel your grey matter expand a little there? Because it did – promise! And now you are well on YOUR way to getting “de bonnes notes” 😉

Time for some Friday fun français! Here is our latest "Testez-vous" question - a test of both your vocab and essential grammar! Comment below with your chosen answer (or your best guess!) then look out for a follow up post next week to see if you were right! Bravo - et merci - to everyone who entered our first “Testez-vous" feature 👏🙏 Ça nous a fait grand plaisir de lire vos réponses ! (We loved reading your responses!)

Did you get it right??! The answer is: a) un jour férié 👏👏👏
'Un jour' is the French for day, and the word ‘férié’ comes from the Latin 'fēriae' meaning festival or day of rest. Both of which sound like a perfect plan for our Jubilee 'jours fériés' this week wouldn't you say? Enjoy the celebrations everyone - amusez-vous bien !🥳👑🎉

Many French will "font le pont" today! "Faire le pont" means to have a long weekend ... so why the random reference to the bridge ("le pont")? Essentially it's a metaphor - by taking today (Friday) off, they are 'bridging the gap' between yesterday's bank holiday and the weekend! Not so random after all! Now, who's playing along below? I'm sure you know it (or, if not, tag a friend who might!)😃

Voilà ! We are super excited to unveil a new series of mini “test yourself” teasers: “Testez-vous !” Every week🤞we plan to post a quick French language question for your puzzling pleasure. (Well, “f” is for fun as well as français!). Comment below the post with your chosen answer a) b) c) or d) or just a thumbs up emoji if you're too shy to say! Look out for the correct answer a few days later to check if you were right! So, first up then, what is the French for "bank holiday"? 🤔💡🎓
