In 1762, a French Aristocrat had a son with an eslaved African woman in Haiti, Marie Dumas. When the aristocrat Alexandre Antoine Davy de la Pailleterie returned to France, his son, Thomas-Alexandre, later joined him. Thomas-Alexander joined the French army at 24, became an exceptional general, and was known as “The Black Devil” by his enemies. Thomas-Alexandre adopted his mother’s last name, Dumas.
