Does Islam Advocate Capitalism? Join us on 23rd March!
A selection of photos from our event on Saturday discussing the topical issue of gender equality;
'Does society have double standards for men and women?'
Thank you to Sheikh Jaffer Ladak and Dr Jennifer Eggert for their time and contributions and to our wonderful host Syra Kazmi
Some interesting points were raised:
- Is society prepared for equality when there is such a disparity between male and female pay
- Islam came and gave women not just rights but an active role within society i.e. to testify.
An explanation for the reason why 2 female witnesses are needed is that, in the 7th century around the world, women were not provided an education so may not have been confident to provide testimony to a court. The second person provides a safety net for the first
- The religion of Islam works with the society that is functioning and wants to take it to a higher level
- Our communities put boys and girls into roles very early in life which can hinder their ability to break out and take active roles within mosques/centres/organisations
- There needs to be greater female representation within our centre's boards and committees
- It is hard to include women in events and community programs as there can be a lack of them willing to take part
Thank you for joining us yesterday for a very insightful discussion on gender equality
The next Paradigm Shift events will shift to focus on Economic issues.

Dear Friends,
Salam Alaykum, Peace be with you,
Thank you for attending last week's 'The Paradigm Shift' event and kicking off Series 3 on the theme of inequality, beginning with 'Does the Quran favour men over women?' Please find a summary of the discussion below.
Join us for the next The Paradigm Shift event to discuss: "Does our society have double standards for men and women?" in conversation with Dr Jennifer Eggert and Shaykh Jaffer Ladak on the 23rd FEbruary
On the topic of "Does the Quran favour men over women?", summary of discussion were:
In principle, Quranic exegesis should always be approached keeping in mind 5 pairing: 1) literal vs metaphorical, 2) universal vs specific, 3) equivocal vs unequivocal, 4) abrogated vs unabrogated and 5) circumstantial vs absolute
Two common objectives to verse 4:34:
Firstly, Arabic word "Qawwamun" interpreted by some jurists as "in charge" and thus implying superiority, while others as "maintain", the latter more appropriate to other instances of this word in 4:135 and 5:8.
Second, Arabic word "Dharaba" interpreted by some jurists as beat, but others as stay away/separate. No evidence from hadith of Prophet (pbuh) or Ahlul Bayt (a.s) of the former in their lives and actually hadiths point to the opposite. Several exegesis (tafsir) also elaborate on the incident that this verse was revealed in which shed more light.
Other objections including the asking of permission to leave house (applies to both genders only when both in house, which is common sense), inheritance (read in context of wider financial system in Islam where men have full financial responsibility for their spouse and families etc.) and testimony for contractual issues (many jurists argue this is for limited cases only)
Do not forget the multitude of other Quranic verses that categorically state equal status of both genders, namely 3:195, 4:124, 16:97, 49:13 and 33:35 backed up by numerous hadiths with strong narration chains.
Despite this, may nations in the world, including so-called Islamic nations, treat women as if they are second class citizens e.g. Saudi Arabia, only until recently did women have the right to vote, to drive a car etc. Huge distinction to be made between culture and religion, and unfortunately many men justify their misogynistic cultural practices in the name of religion, which must be challenged at every opportunity.
In Shia theology women can and have reached the senior scholarly levels of mujtahids, e.g. Mujtahideh Amin Isfahani, and more should be encouraged.
Examples of female leadership in the Quran numerous including Asiya wife of Pharoah, Mariam (a.s) and Khadija (a.s), as well as Queen of Sheba who consulted male ministers/advisers etc.
For most Shia jurists, no objection to a women being a speaker to a mixed audience or to perform duties in positions of leadership - some objections are based on a weak hadith from sources other than Shia hadith sources. Despite this, often many men falsely argue that having female speakers is "un-Islamic", and many women themselves will only put themselves forward to speaking to a female-only audience.
