NFT Global Summit Opening Lecture

NFT 500 years ago?
Strange and surprising Da Vinci connections!
NFT and blockchain are a big shock for problems related to Copyright, Arts, Design and the most important aspect: “how to get paid for our work?”. Incredible but true, these are the same problems faced by the masters Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Classic arts are “pure” but also our masters need moneys and had to sign contracts, exactly the same thing we do when we mine a NFT! We will discover some documents and some incredible details that will show the
Leonardo and Michelangelo real “human” face. My work is to find the source of creativity of the renaissance masters but I find also the common problems we have also today: money and copyright. Inside contracts signed by Leonardo we will see the problems he faced and we will discover some unknown aspects of what we believe are untouchable pure classic arts linked also with NFTs.

In celebration of Leonardo da Vinci’s ingenuity that has fascinated the world for centuries, Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE Lab has teamed up with “The Inventor” – a new animated film about Leonardo from Jim Capobianco, the Academy Award-nominated writer of the Pixar film “Ratatouille” – Foliascope and Château du Clos Lucé - Parc Leonardo da Vinci to launch a new “3D Design Challenge” to bring Leonardo’s drawings to life.

The challenge invites individuals to showcase their 3D skills by using Dassault Systèmes’ 3D digital applications – which have enabled the design and engineering of groundbreaking industrial innovations for 40 years – to digitally reconstruct an invention from Leonardo’s codices.

Five winners will be selected based on how closely the 3D model resembles the original drawing, how well the model articulates the movements intended by Leonardo in the corresponding sketch, and how easily the model could be 3D printed. Each winner will receive a 3D-printed version of their model, and gain access to Dassault Systèmes’ xDesign application for one year.

The winning designs will also be featured in the upcoming “The Inventor” stop-motion animated film that follows the incredible journey of Leonardo in a humorous and inventive story for the whole family, voiced by Stephen Fry as Leonardo, Daisy Ridley as Princess Marguerite de Navarre, and Marion Cotillard as Louise de Savoy.

Meet Carmen Bambach, Met Drawings and Prints curator and specialist on the life and work of Leonardo da Vinci.

Today, on Leonardo's birthday, we share a reflection by Bambach on one of his drawings—“The beauty of The Met’s drawing of the Head of the Virgin by Leonardo never ceases to inspire me. It is a miracle that so magical, yet so fragile a work of art on paper has lived on for more than 500 years.”

Get inspired by Leonardo's charcoal and chalk study, which is closely connected to the final design of his oil painting on panel, the "Virgin and Child with Saint Anne" located at the Musée du Louvre in Paris.

Milano, Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Pinacoteca, cod. F 274 inf. 53

🇬🇧 Leonardo da Vinci, Grotesque head and bust of a man in profile facing left, c. 1490, metalpoint, pen and sepia ink on paper, 153 X 112 mm.
Milan, Veneranda Biblioteca Ambrosiana, Pinacoteca, cod. F 274 inf. 53

In Leonardo's time, the term 'loaded head' meant a face whose characteristic and expressive elements were deliberately accentuated in an attempt to capture the secret nature of an individual, to investigate the relationship between soul and body and to determine the nature of the subject itself through studies of physiognomy.

Leonardo was attracted to the ideal beautiful as well as the ideal ugly, exploring the depths of the human species, that is, the darkness of reason, even the extreme dissolution in old age.

Here is a commoner with a drooping face and an upturned nose, a stereotype of wealth, of the moral vices of the society of the time.

It’s sometimes just amazing what gems you can find in books.

This book was an 18th century edition on the life of Leonardo Da Vinci and one of the owners used it as a sketchbook and partial diary, depicting his life as a soldier in the start of the Napoleonic period and his fascination with artists such as Michelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. Just something you don’t see in too many books

Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi Revisited: Personal Style, Workshop, Style, Global Brand?, October 13-15, 2022, Lecture Hall, Universitatsbibliothek, Albertina, Beethovenstraße 6, 04107 Leipzig - The conference focusses on key issues posed by Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi, a painting which was revealed to the public for the first time in 2011. These include questions of personal style, the provenance of the painting, Leonardo's workshop practice and the image production of his circle. In addition, there will be detailed analyses of the pictorial form of the Salvator Mundi as well as an exploration of the sales and advertising strategies of the protagonists from the international art market and the media, who played such a significant role in the transformation of the painting into a global icon. The conference thus covers a spectrum which ranges from issues of personal style to the machinations of the global art market.

Vincenzo Peruggia stole the Mona Lisa from the Louvre on this day in 1914.
