📣🌊 The winners of the RCA Grand Challenge 2023/24: Ocean & Cities are revealed – as our exhibition opens at RCA Battersea until 26 March!

🐚 First Place goes to Thames Mussel Conservation Centre and Barking Barges – a speculative design proposal envisions leveraging conservation efforts for the Freshwater Pearl Mussel Species to positively impact Barking's socio-economic development.

Designed by Keerthi Pradaa Balajee (MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering), Jinglei Cao (MA Service Design), YiMing Pan (MA Fashion) and Tom Scrimgeour (MA Design Products).

🐟 Second place goes to HabiTide – proposing a sustainable solution to create refuges for fish in Deptford Creek whose habitats have been affected by human activities. HabiTide are biodegradable structures made from fish bones, sodium alginate and clay.

Designed by Watanya Aekplakorn (MA Service Design), Claire Lee (MA Fashion), Ching Hang Ng (MA/MSc Innovation Design Engineering), Dawoon Yim (MA Design Products) and Ruyi Yu (MA Textiles).

📱 Third place goes to Bexley’s EELvolution, the project aims to cultivate awareness about the plight of endangered eels in the river Cray in Bexley through an app that gives real-time updates and educational content, while also encouraging participation and shared responsibility.

Designed by Raveena R. Batham (MA Design Products), Lucy Katherine Bishop (MA Textiles), Minmin Ke (MA Fashion), Wen Xing (MA Intelligent Mobility) and Xinyu Zhu (MA Service Design).

🐥 Special Commendation for Best Co-Design Project goes to 2049 Oceans Committee of Enfield, this platform for ‘social dreaming’ is set in the year 2049. Two-hour role-playing workshops bring together designers and locals to speculate the futures we want for our cities and oceans.

Designed by Anna Gao (MA Fashion), Kelly Harrigan (MA Design Products), Yiwen Tai (MA Service Design), Yixin Xu (MA Design Products), Xinyue Zhang (MA Textiles).

🗺️ Special Commendation for Best Participatory Mapping goes to Aquatic Ecologist Scout Pack that allows Scouts to add more ocean-related activities and badges to their manifesto. The project envisions young Scouts proudly and confidently proclaiming, "The Scouts made me an Ocean citizen."

RCA scholarships 15/03/2024

The Sir Frank Bowling PhD Studentship is open to UK candidates from Black African and Caribbean diaspora heritage, or from mixed Black African and Caribbean diaspora heritage, for September 2024 entry.

The Scholarship is named after RCA alumnus Sir Frank Bowling and created in collaboration with RCA BLK, forms part of the College’s commitment to building a diverse and inclusive postgraduate study and research community.

In addition to tuition fees for a three-year period of full-time study, the Sir Frank Bowling PhD Studentship will provide a UKRI-aligned stipend of £20,622 per annum, and access to research training support.

Applications will remain open until Friday 3 May 2024.

🌊 How can we ensure the future of our oceans?

Students from our School of Design present two exhibitions considering how we can improve the health and economy of our oceans using design in the Hangar at RCA Battersea from 21 to 26 March.

1️⃣ Grand Challenge 2023/24: Ocean & Cities Exhibition presents the shortlisted projects from this year's RCA Grand Challenge using ocean science, co-design, and place-based approaches to examine London's relationship to the ocean.

2️⃣ Ocean Futures: Multi-Species Perspectives presents work from our MDes Design Futures exploring topics such as overfishing and the future of seafood, the resilience of coastal communities, and the impact of underwater noise pollution on marine species.

Artists bid to make Aids memorial near Diana ward 12/03/2024

"This permanent memorial will ensure we remember those affected and honour the ongoing fight against HIV and AIDS."

Five artists have been shortlisted to create London's first permanent AIDS Memorial including our MA Contemporary Art Practice Tutor, Harold Offeh.

The successful artist will be announced in June by AIDS Memory UK.

CLIMAVORE x Jameel at RCA is launching the 2024 Food Action Awards!

We're inviting proposals to identify new seasons of the climate crisis and their manifestation in other geographies facing similar conditions along the broken food chain.

The 2024 Food Action Awards are an opportunity to connect new seasons, grounded ideas, activist networks and geographies in flux to the wider CLIMAVORE platform.

The awards are open to international practitioners, collectives and researchers in the areas of architecture, visual arts, food studies, farming, environmental humanities or any other related discipline.

There are two awards available:

👉The first award, Research Action, is open to those with at least 5 years of practice. This award of £25,000 includes all fees and production costs.

👉The second award, Emerging Practice, is open to recent RCA graduates (within the last 6 years). This award of £15,000 includes all fees and production costs.

Deadline for applications is Sunday 21 April 23.59 (GMT)

📣 RCA BLK (the Royal College of Art Association of Black Students, Alumni & Friends) and Yinka Shonibare Foundation Yinka Shonibare Foundation today announce their partnership on a new artist residency in Lagos, Nigeria.

Together, the organisations will host two residencies in spring 2024, in collaboration with Guest Artists Space Foundation (G.A.S.) in Nigeria; one for an exceptional early / mid career artist who is an RCA BLK member; and one for a research based proposal from the wider RCA BLK community.

The Yinka Shonibare Foundation (UK) and Guest Artists Space (G.A.S.) Foundation were established in 2019 by the eminent British-Nigerian Artist Yinka Shonibare CBE RA. Yinka’s vision behind the two organisations is to support the development of new work and ideas, foster mutual understanding of cultural differences and break down traditional barriers of privilege.

The selected residents are Graeme Smith (MA Ceramics & Glass, 2023) and Remi Kuforiji (MA Architecture, 2021).

Prawn waste designer among arts prize's London winners 29/02/2024

🦐👏 Congratulations to our 2023 MA/MSc Global Innovation Design graduate, Rhea Thomas on winning a £10,000 Futures Award Fellowship from The Arts Foundation for her fertilising seed trays made from prawn waste!

Judges said "Rhea has a really strong understanding and was able to articulate very clearly the environmental and social benefits of her design interventions." Rhea's work in sustainable design has previously been recognised by the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.

Sir Frank Bowling graduated from the Royal College of Art with a silver medal for painting in 1962. An original force in London’s art scene with a style combining figurative, symbolic and abstract elements, Sir Frank Bowling is also a champion of arts education.

At the RCA, we’re proud to offer a scholarship in Sir Frank Bowling‘s name. The scholarship supports 24 UK MA and MRes students and one PhD student every year from Black African and Caribbean diaspora heritage, or mixed Black African and Caribbean diaspora heritage.

Her film 'Visible Mending' exploring 'emotional repair through wool' is nominated in the 'British Short Animation' category.

Dr Samantha Moore is an award-winning animation director and researcher. She has made work on diverse subjects, from competitive sweet pea growing to cutting edge microbiology, archaeology, neuroscience, and her own experience of having twins.
