Britannia Row Productions celebrates 46 years today!

Britannia Row was formed in 1975 out of Pink Floyd’s desire to tour less frequently, allowing the crew to use their equipment for touring rental jobs year-round.
Brit Row Director, Mike Lowe, reminisces about this time of close-knit networking:
“The production fraternity in those days, particularly for London-based crew, were very connected. There were fewer of us then. Those not working when in London gathered at night in various watering holes around Wardour Street and at The Speakeasy Club in Margaret Street. It’s where we got to know one another and where I began to get to know some of the Pink Floyd crew. Before mobile phones and the internet landed, much of our work was picked up by word-of-mouth in these pubs and clubs. Then these relationships with the Pink Floyd camp were strengthened on the road.”
Over the last 46 years, we’ve been fortunate enough to continue our rock ’n’ roll legacy while also navigating into live sports, high-end fashion, corporate work, installed sound and virtual audio solutions.
It continues to be a difficult time for our industry, yet we can’t wait to safely continue doing what we do best, working with some incredibly talented crews, artists and managers.
From David Gilmour to Kasabian, Dua Lipa to Harry Styles, the London Cabaret Club, Aida at Masada (in the desert!), the (Virgin Atlantic 787) concert which saw Rudimental and Gorgon City play a gig on a plane at 35,0000 ft, and Robbie Williams’ Swing Tour to name just a few, we remain ready to support exceptional live experiences.
Led by our new wave of Directors, L*z Dwight, Nicola Amoruso and Christina Bosch, here’s to the next 46 years of doing so as part of the Clair Global family.

Congratulations Britannia Row!
And to celebrate the 1 year landmark of the Culture Recovery Fund - here is one of our videos from Live Sound Intermediate - Advanced Acoustics Part 1 of 4
Today, 5th July, it is one year since the Culture Recovery Fund launched. Since then, this landmark investment has helped protect thousands of organisations across arts, culture and heritage from the impact of the pandemic.
Thanks to the Fund, we were able to bring back training by going online with our courses for sound engineers and technicians. This will help both the skills gap created by the pandemic and in getting the live events sector back to work. It has reduced the costs for students. It created much work for freelancers in the creative sector for six months in the production of the online course content and delivery platform.

Legendary stage manager and lighting crew chief Andy Pollard sadly passed away suddenly last week.

Andy was the long time stage manager for the Foo Fighters and was an integral member of the Foos’ Family.

The band dedicated last weeks Madison Square Garden gig to his honour.

Andy was a joy to work with and had a great sense of humour. Road crew and musicians around the world are mourning.

As well as the Foo Fighters, he had stage managed for Kings of Leon, Nine Inch Nails, Beck, Arcade Fire and Tenacious D. His skills in concert lighting were utilised by Artic Monkeys, Iggy Pop and Beck.

We made a big announcement today! ..
Today in the UK was to be freedom day. The day targeted for all venues to open up to full capacity. The UK Government has decided to delay this for a further month to get as many people over the age of 18 vaccinated.

We know once restrictions are lifted that the demand for Live Music will be huge once more and potentially bigger than before the pandemic. The US is opening up for shows ahead of the rest of the world. Ticket demand is high, quickly sold-out shows for June, July and beyond are the norm. We have all been starved of live music for a very long time!

BRPT interfaces with many industry groups, not only here in the UK , but worldwide and we are hearing the concerns about shortage of people in the industry when it returns.

Firstly, that during the pandemic, a number of workers have left the industry out of financial necessity or retirement. With no work, young people have not had the training to replace them. The industry faces a skills gap. There has never been a better time to train to get into the industry.

The second concern is that existing live events production workers are anxious about their return to work after such a long gap.

It has been an incredibly tough time, for all, especially financially, for those in the industry and for those wanting to start in the industry

We have taken the decision to play our part in helping our struggling industry to get back to work successfully, to discount all of our recently released online courses by 50% until 31st August 2021.
We have taken the decision to offer our courses at 50% discount until 31st August 2021.

If you wish to get into the industry, this big discount applies to our full LSF or LSI courses and to our wide range of individual subject-specific lectures for existing sound engineer or audio techs wishing to brush up their skills and knowledge in certain areas.

BRPT is dedicated to the improvement of skills and knowledge in live audio and to the wellbeing of the industry and those who work in it and now more than ever we want to help.

We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded funding by the to enable us get back on our feet and recover from the devastating effects that Covid-19 has had on our business. The pandemic stopped us in our tracks from being able to operate.

The money is an absolutely essential and very welcomed lifeline and will be used to develop an online training programme, so we can continue to deliver our world class training in a Covid safe way and allow us to reach new audiences.

Over the next five months the grant will go to audio and video professionals who will be working on producing the online training and provide them with much needed income.

Marketing of the online courses will begin in November 2020 with the first courses scheduled to be available in January 2021.

Work has started on this very exciting project and we look forward to continue sharing our progress!

Britannia Row Productions Director, Bryan Grant, writes an open letter to the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson as the live events industry gears up for a global action day.

Dear Boris,
I’m a Director of Britannia Row Productions, an audio supply company.
During the past 40 years, we have been privileged to have provided equipment and technicians to many major concert artistes including Pink Floyd, Peter Gabriel, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Robbie Williams, Simply Red, Mumford and Sons and Harry Styles.
And, live events such as Her Majesty’s Golden and Diamond Jubilees, Live 8, the Barcelona and London Olympics, the Rugby World Cup and FA cup finals.
We currently employ around 70 staff and 100 freelance people, with most of our staff currently on furlough.
As well as providing the most state-of-the-art equipment, we supply audio engineers and technicians, and over the years, both our company and many of our people have gained an international reputation for excellence in our field.
I, like most of my colleagues who provide these services, prefer to be in the background and have never sought or received assistance from Government in the past, but the current crisis in our industry has compelled me to step forward and make a direct and public plea for you to help the hundreds of thousands of people who work in our industry.
Boris, when you and your colleagues go to a concert, you expect a visual and audio experience to enhance the performance of your favourite performer, but perhaps don’t give much thought as to how all of these amazing visuals and stirring sounds are achieved. Quite rightly; you simply enjoy the moment.
Well, the reality is that behind the scenes, hundreds of people will have made that show possible. The artistes, their managers and production crew have worked for months, with lighting video and audio designers to produce shows that will thrill their fans and ensure concert spend is boosting the economy.
Promoters have been appointed to provide the venues to accommodate these performances. Service companies have been chosen to provide the production expertise, the equipment, technicians, stagehands, security, catering etc, etc. to make these events happen safely and seamlessly, every night, and on time.
The skills involved don’t just happen; they take years of training and experience to acquire. British technicians are famed throughout the world. These skills will be lost if people leave our industry in desperation as they seek other work in order to feed themselves and their families.
I often hear you and your colleagues talk of the ‘hard-working’ people in the UK. Well, the people in my industry do work hard and are essential to a sector which contributes literally billions to our economy.
Please, don’t let them down, support them until we can find a way to bring back our live concerts and events. We don’t live by bread alone, as the old saying goes.
Please don’t lay waste to an industry that brings enormous enjoyment to simply being alive.
Bryan Grant

Barry was passionate about delivering high quality training and loved sharing knowledge. The many students Barry taught over the years regarded Barry as their mentor and friend. We have continued our training programs since in Barry's honour and we continue to see many students developing great careers after completing their training with us. Barry was always very proud of all his students successes and would continue to be so now. The BRPT team will remain forever grateful that Barry was the inspiration behind what we continue to do. Psychoacoustics, the study of how humans perceive sound 03/01/2020

This month's LSA is – Psychoacoustics, the study of how humans perceive sound

Barnaby Thwaites and Britannia Row Productions presents Psychoacoustics, the study of how humans perceive sound.
This session starts with a detailed description of the human ear with particular reference to its properties that underscore our appreciation of music.
A number of key concepts are discussed, and demonstrated live using the presenter’s original audio constructions including critical bandwidth, masking, beats, phantom tones, missing fundamental, pitch perception and autocorrelation, consonance/dissonance and directivity of sound.
Participants will experience intriguing auditory phenomena, helping to underscore understanding of some of the nuances of audio engineering.
Barnaby Thwaites has had a life-long and varied musical life from the age of 6 onwards. Most of his working career was spent in the NHS as a cardiologist, from which he escaped to pursue recording and mixing in his own studio, playing bass and singing in local bands, and developing a thoroughly healthy infatuation with analogue gear.
Psychoacoustic interest was triggered when considering why cardiology trainees found evaluation of heart sounds with a stethoscope so difficult. This has led to the conclusion that the ear is far more sophisticated than the heart, although deep down this conclusion is made somewhat reluctantly!

Schools out for Summer! Our Live Sound Technology, Live Sound Fundamentals and Live Sound Intermediate courses have all now come to a close at the end of May for the summer and our students can now take a well earned break from the classroom!

The results were fantastic and we are incredibly proud of our students and of our tutor’s achievements. Well done everyone!

A big thank you to Luca and Marcel and all the team who delivered the sessions for their hard work and dedication that has produced such outstanding results.

Our training programmes resume again in August with Live Sound Fundamentals commencing 31st August and Live Sound Intermediate 1st September.

Our trainees had a truly valuable day visiting the legendary Roundhouse venue in Camden where they had the opportunity to watch the turnaround of the audio system from stereo to 360°.
The group spent the day there from the load-in, watching the L-acoustic K2 and Kara set up be rigged at 360°.
System Engineer, Sergiy Zhytnikov explained the signal flow and the steps involved in designing and planning the system to get optimal sound results.
Monitor Engineer, Fergus Mount explained his setup with wireless microphones and in-ears.
Antonio Neto from Britannia Row was with the trainees throughout giving support, explaining the steps and answering any questions.
Thank you to Sergiy, Fergus and Antonio for such an informative and interesting day!

Our Story

Earn practical, industry-based qualifications in professional live sound from Britain’s leading audio hire specialists: Britannia Row Productions.
We have knowledge through experience. Our teaching is constantly being updated through experience. Our tutors are all working practitioners. They can refer to the system prediction they did yesterday and site many other real-life examples to illustrate a point. They can talk about the mains system design that they did for a stadium show last week. Our students are constantly with audio professionals who are at the top of their game who can become mentors beyond the duration of the course. Our students have the opportunity to network at the beginning of their careers and at a high level. They have access to the very latest technology and sometimes to technology yet to be released.
