Itโs that time of year again โ๏ธโ๏ธ cold weather, constant rain and also in the middle of an energy crisis ๐
Your body which is always in survival mode, will be seeking out ways to protect itself from the cold weather, it may want to eat more, put on a few pounds of body fat, increase that insulation ๐ช๐ผ
This isnโt a bad thing, especially with Christmas coming up and the amount of food we eat around this time ๐๐
Learning to not over indulge and set yourself back is the key ๐๐ผ
Sticking to maintenance calories or even a small surplus and will be a great way to do this: it will improve your mood, you will feel stronger in the gym, and you wonโt put on too much body fat that will total undo your weightloss goals and set you back for months.๐

Turn round and ask yourself how many times has that voice in your head stopped you from doing something you really wanna do ? ๐ค
Take control and do it ๐ช๐ผ๐ you have to nothing lose, you either have fun or you donโt, you learn for next time, be open minded and willing ๐ฅ

Small changes over timeโฆ Rome wasnโt built in a dayโฆ so when you are trading one lifestyle to another, you need to build each element up brick by brick.
Instead of jumping into training 5 days a week without having a clue what you need to doโฆget a coach first, get a program ,start with twoโฆthree days a week and find what works for you ๐
Instead of binning all your food and stocking up a whole new fridge, clean up your present diet, remove sugary and snack foods for healthier options, small changes can make a big difference ๐ช๐ผ

Coming from someone who use to stretch often before training, I never found there was a massive decrease in performance when lifting, but it did take a lot of time before a session to get ready to train ๐คฆ๐ผโโ๏ธ
Since I have turned to dynamic movements like Controlled Articular Rotations (CARs) and Progressive and Regressive angular isometric loading (Pails and Rails) mobility work before sessions, I have decreased my warm up time, more freedom of movement when training and feel more engaged in the session with increased performance ๐ช๐ผ๐ฏ
So making the switch to dynamic warm ups with mobility drills I feel is the best move for performance ๐

Personally I donโt use them. More from the stand point I try to use minimal equipment to aid my lifting as I want to have raw strength without assistance ๐ช๐ผ๐ฏ
If you were walking down the street and someone needed help to lift something or you meet a friend and at that time they happen to need help moving stuff, you arenโt gonna turn round and say โhold on I need to go get my lifting gloves from the carโ ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ take from that what you will โ

After an amazing holiday to Kavos Greece it got me thinking on how this lifestyle could create better experiences ๐โ๏ธ
When you have a training routine, a diet plan, you are seeing changes in your body and in your mental state, it all comes together ๐๐ผ๐
This doesnโt just make your everyday life betterโฆ but when you go travelling or on holiday you walk taller, smile more, try new things, express yourself because you are more comfortable in who you are ๐
And when walking round in a swim suit or trunks, you feel just as confident than if you had a T shirt or dress on ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ little things like that matter, it makes you more approachable, friendly, attractive ๐๐ผ these qualities can lead to better experiences ๐

After 12 weeks of hard work Hannah has shown some great results not only in strength but also in weight loss and fitness ๐ช๐ผโ
Hannah has lost 17.6 pounds which is over a stone, 2 dress sizes down since starting with me ๐
Her goals started off focusing on strength and weight loss but they have evolved over the 12 weeks as she has now started her journey with the sport of rugby and has been participating in pre season training at Lisburn Rugby Club as well as gym training ๐๐๐ผโโ๏ธ
This has lead to me changing her program gradually to cater for the sport and the goals related to improving performance ๐๐ฅ

After an amazing birthday weekend a week ago it got me thinking of some of the things that have changed in the last year that have impacted my life for the better which I hope can do the same for you ๐
1. Make The Step Towards A Better Future ๐๐ผ - I know this is scary but being able to look around and realise that an environment isnโt serving you and you need to leaveโฆ takes courage and it took me a long time to make that change, but I can tell you now I have never been happier, if your work, the place you train or any other place you are involved in leisure activities, makes you feel unhappy then you should start looking elsewhere.
2. Audit Your Social Group โ
- If your social group doesnโt support you and your goals then you need new friends. This has been crucial over the last few years, and has allowed me to grow as a person without the barriers of others holding me back ๐
3. Self Improvement - I canโt tell you how many hours (thanks to lockdown) that I spent thinking back on things and how I could of done things better, which lead me to take steps to learn more not just about training, health, business, but on psychology and relationships ๐ฏ podcasts, audio books etc. have been invaluable to my self development, no body is perfect and there are always areas for development ๐

My fitness journey has been long, full of mistakes and at many times a disaster ๐
5 hour gym sessions, KFC as a post workout meal, not having a clue what progress overload was or how to structure a decent workout ๐

I get itโฆ โthe weathers great, you are off work, you have holiday plansโฆthe gym can wait ๐๐ผโ
Trust me there is nothing wrong taking a step away from the gym to go on holiday or take a few nights away to travel ๐
But for how long ? 1 week ? 2 weeks ? A month? ๐ค
Here a few things to consider if taking some time off:
1. Maintain your calories and make sure to be eating nutrient dense foods 70-80% of the time with 20-30% room for cravings ๐
2. After about a month you will probably notice your strength and fitness has decreased, so be smart with your time off, becoming complacent with your diet and training can reverse your hard work, stay on track with calories and donโt be away too long, still be doing some sort of physical activity while you are away ๐ช๐ผ๐ฏ
3. Get some new training goals for the summer, something that gets you excited about going to the gym ๐๐ผ e.g. change up exercises to try something new, get a new program, set a strength or fitness goal that you have been wanting to achieve ๐
Rome wasnโt built in a day, neither can it be destroyed in a day, but it needs to be maintained or it will start to fall apart ๐ฅ
Think of your health and training with the same mindset ๐

If you have been watching my stories/ posts over the last few weeks/months, you have seen my clients working hard to achieve their goals; showing up, doing the work and loving every minute of it ๐๐ผ๐ฏ
This doesnโt mean they are more motivated than you or they have more will power than youโฆ it means you donโt have a clear goal and a clear reason or โWhyโ that makes you want to start ๐ง
Think what is the biggest thing you want to change ? Do you want to lose weight ? ( fit into that dress or pair of jeans, look slimmer in a shirt/ t shirt) Do you want to have more energy and get fitter ? ( no loss of breathe going up stairs, run with your kids, keep up with your friends) Or do you want to build muscle, improve your physique and increase your self esteem (fill out a t shirt or jeans, go up a size, catch peopleโs the attention)๐ฅ๐
Then ask yourselfโฆwhat is your reasons for wanting to get a coach ? How is exercise going to benefit you ? How will it change your life for the better ? If you achieved your goal what would it mean to you ? ๐ฅ๐ช๐ผ
Once you are clear on these it is a great place to start and get focused on what you want to do ๐ if they donโt give you the incentive to change then they arenโt big enough !!! Go back to the start and think it through until you have clear goals and a clear why to get you to take that first step โ

I have a great story for you today about one of my clients Rachel ๐๐ช๐ผ
Rachel came to me at the end of last year looking for my help. During her journey she has had ups and downs but even still she always made it to the gym, itโs also great that her mate Rianna is there to motivate her too ๐๐ผ
Rachel has struggled with eating, following calories, keeping her meals structured through out the day and making better food choice ๐คฏ
