An Accredited Museum of elementary education in an original school setting. The British Schools Museum in Hitchin is set in the unique set of school buildings that developed on the site.
Our classrooms are open to the public and are furnished and equipped to show the history of elementary education from 1810 to 1969 - when the last children moved away from the site. The museum is run by the Hitchin British Schools Trust.
One of our volunteers, Ruth, took this photo of the flowers outside the museum during one of her daily walks, normally tended to by our gardening volunteers.
They’re in full bloom and brightly coloured - almost heart shaped! Very apt!
We're looking forward to welcoming visitors back as soon as it's safe. In the meantime our Easter chicks and bunnies seem to be making the most of the beautiful garden. Happy holiday everyone.
What a Happy Easter!
Last week two wonderful ladies who work in the paediatric ward at the Lister Hospital in Herts came to visit us in the popup...
They mentioned the difficulties they are having because of Covid-19 and that only single use games/activities can be used to give to the children.
Today we had the lovely Denise, on behalf of the British Schools Museum, drop by and donate 100 single-use craft kits! Thank you so much, it will mean the world to the children #helpnhsheroes
We may be closed, but all the Easter craft activities we created have gone to a wonderful cause. We packaged over 100 sets and donated them to Lister Hospital for the key workers and children on the wards. They will be suitably quarantined. Thank you NHS heroes! Help NHS heroes
Ruth, one of our volunteers, took this photo of the museum while out on one of her daily strolls... what, no traffic?!
It seems spring is in the air! Thanks to our gardening volunteers, we have some beautiful arrangements - here are some photos to enjoy!
[03/18/20] Please note that the latest term of Yoga School has now been postponed. Stay well and we will be back saluting the sun just as soon as it is safe to do so.
Really glad you enjoyed it! So... can anyone beat the library's time? https://britishschoolsmuseum.org.uk/discover/whats-on/1-hour-live-escape-room/escape-room/
Last night a few of our staff attempted the escape room at the British Schools Museum 📖 and made it out just in time, with only 1 minute and 28 seconds spare!
This was a really great experience that challenged us (and inspired us 😉 ) to think outside the box and work together 🗝

Escape Room in the British Schools Museum
It was a cold Saturday evening when Susan Downie, John Gooden, Mike DS, Mike W and Michael R were all poised to Escape from the Victorian classroom at the British Schools Museum.
We met in the recently Rotary refurbished Volunteers Hub then went to the classroom when the quest to Escape began.
There was a strict Victorianesque teacher – our very own Denise.
We had 60 minutes to Escape.
After much scratching of heads, some swearing and a lot of brain power, we Escaped !
Albeit after 59 minutes and 32 seconds !
Phew, mission accomplished. Time flew by and we did it without our mobile phones !
We had a great day on Saturday with Barri Ghai for his EVP masterclass! We look forward to some more of his investigations...
