Lovely piece on BBC South East news tonight about student Yuliia, to whom we gave a supported place at Cobham Hall after she fled Kyiv with her mother and sister to live with a local family under the Homes for Ukraine scheme. Yuliia yesterday received astonishing GCSE results after just one year's teaching and despite the horror of leaving behind her father and grandparents. If not on again later tonight, you'll catch her interview on BBC iplayer - we'll share details when it's available. Huge congratulations from us all, Yuliia.

Congratulations to Cobham Hall students, today celebrating a wealth of superb GCSE grades – some of the best in the School’s recent history.

Our students’ performance is truly outstanding given the return this year to pre-pandemic grading, which has taken standards back to 2019 levels and stripped out an anticipated 300,000 top grades (7-9) across the UK compared with 2022. Counter to this national picture, at Cobham Hall, 43% of all grades achieved reached the exceptional 7-9 band (A*/A in the previous system) – almost double the 22% rate achieved across England, broadly in line with our performance last year and considerably higher than in pre-Covid 2019 when the figure was 36%.

At the very highest level, the achievement is even more impressive. An exceptional 29% of all grades this year fell in the 9-8 band (broadly equivalent to A* in the previous system) – astonishingly, this is not only up on last year’s position by 5 points, but almost double the level attained before grade inflation in 2019. Moreover, 13% of all grades met the ultimate gold standard – 9 – up from 8% in 2022 and 4% in pre-Covid 2019.

These fine results saw half of all our students achieve an average grade of 6 or higher, while a quarter averaged an exceptional 7 or more.

Performances in science were particularly strong – as they were, indeed, in the A Level results announced last week. In Physics, two-thirds of grades met the 7-9 exceptional benchmark; in Chemistry, this figure rises to 73%, and in Biology, to an outstanding 80%.

Cobham Hall today sends congratulations to our Year 13 students who have secured a host of excellent A Level grades and places at some of the UK’s top universities. As of this moment, 80% have been offered places at their first choice destination, more than one-third of which are at prestigious Russell Group universities.

Their performance is particularly pleasing in the context of this year’s nationwide return to 2019 pre-COVID grading norms, wiping out the significant grade inflation seen across the last three years. Astonishingly, the proportion of Cobham Hall grades falling in the all-important A*- C band has increased year on year to an excellent 81%, despite 2023’s significant toughening of grade boundaries and standards. Our students also passed every single subject they took, with this 100% pass rate again an improvement on 2022.

An outstanding 100% of grades in all Science subjects fell in the key A* – C category, with 100% of grades in Geography likewise reaching this critical band. Another notable subject success was Art, gaining 100% top A*/A grades. In the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) – beloved by universities – two-thirds of Cobham Hall students’ grades (67%) were A*/A, while more than three-quarters (78%) were A*/B.

Individual student successes include Geography scholar Francesca, whose A grades in Geography and EPQ, and B in Biology, helped secure a place at the University of Exeter, to read Geography; Erica, who is off to study Politics and International Relations at the University of Southampton; and Alice, with a place to study English and Creative Writing at Royal Holloway. Alice not only achieved results which include A grades in both English and EPQ and a B in History but, incredibly, she managed to publish her first novel during her A Level study.

Headmistress Mrs Wendy Barrett said:

“We are so proud of the achievements of each and every one of our Year 13 students, particularly given the wholesale changes in grade boundaries they have faced. Theirs is an unusually small cohort, which makes analysis and comparison difficult, but to have achieved grades which outperformed last year’s percentage in the vital top A* – C band is testament to their tremendous hard work and determination.

“There is so much to celebrate today, and as a physicist myself, I must say I am especially pleased to see how Science continues to thrive in our hitherto all-girls environment. There is also so much to look forward to in the coming year, as our curriculum is enhanced by the inclusion of Global Perspectives at GCSE, and we build on this year’s great success in Art with its expansion to include not only Art, Craft and Design but also Graphic Communications, and Textiles. As well, of course, as the opening of our first sixth form boys’ boarding House, Stuart House.”

She concludes: “But above all, today we send heartfelt congratulations to our Class of 2023 and wish them all the very best for the next exciting stage in their education and careers ahead. I also give enormous thanks to their teachers, whose endless dedication these results reflect, and which makes all our new developments possible.”

We were delighted to welcome the One Day Film School to Cobham Hall as part of our Curriculum Enhancement Week. From learning fight choreography to filming their very own short films around the School, our students were able to get involved in a number of fun, interactive workshops. Among the incredibly creative 10-shot films our students made, 'The Affair' stood out and was awarded the Oscar!

On the eve of the opening Ashes test, 100 Kent schoolchildren will battle for their own taste of cricket glory at Cobham Hall – the original home of the Ashes urn.

Thursday 15th June will see nine Kent schools take part in a Kwik Cricket tournament in the grounds of Cobham Hall, which was once home to English cricket team captain Ivo Bligh. It was to Bligh that the now iconic trophy was first presented in Australia in 1882, and to Cobham Hall that he brought it back, where it sat proudly on the mantelpiece for many years.

All friends and family are warmly invited to join us for our upcoming Creative Arts Festival on Tuesday 13th June. The festival showcases Cobham Hall students' art, music and drama and promises to be a wonderful occasion.

If you would like to attend, please reply to the School Office on [email protected]

‘There’s more in you than you think’

At Cobham Hall, we know each girl is capable of brilliance. It is our responsibility to provide the academic knowledge to flourish, but also to inspire each girl to find her own path in life. We support them in developing the confidence to pursue their goals.

We believe that success can only be achieved by enabling our girls to have the courage to push themselves. This is realised through a set of core values – Trust, Respect, Honesty, Kindness, Tolerance – that create and instil a moral framework of behaviour: a support network that allows each girl to know that their peers and the staff around them will be there to cheer them on as they succeed, or help them back up if they fall.

Our Personal Discovery Framework brings together our core values and our Round Square IDEALS of Internationalism, Democracy, Environmentalism, Adventure, Leadership and Service. Together, these form the basis of a framework designed to support to development of skills girls will need to cope with all manner of situations they will encounter both in School and in life. Skills such as creativity, confidence, teamwork, communication, adaptability, empathy, resilience, and time management. Skills that enable us to prepare girls coming through our doors for jobs that may not have been thought of yet, and to have an active, valuable role in society. We are proud of the sheer variety of paths taken by Cobham Hall Elders once they have flown the nest.
