Goodmoves » | Sustainable Build Manager

Our partners at LoveMilton are looking for a Sustainable Build Manager to work part time in their offices! You will be working on developing the outdoor classrooms at Chirnsyde Primary School and joining a fantastic team. This role will cover maternity leave.

We worked with LoveMilton on their outdoor classroom at Miltonbank Primary and it was great fun; working with reclaimed materials it was fascinating to see a shipping container develop into a classroom that is now well loved by pupils and teachers at the school. Want to get involved? Click the link below for more information on the role and how to apply. Deadline for applications is Friday (29 January 2016). This role involves identifying construction projects which will help to achieve these aims and organising and running training courses to deliver the projects identified. Scottish Ecological Design Association | SEDA | 100 Sustainable Scottish Buildings | A SEDA...

As part of the year of Architecture and Design, SEDA is publishing ‘100 Sustainable Scottish Buildings’, a hardback visual and written resource that demonstrates the diversity found in sustainable projects in Scotland. The book will be punctuated by a series of essays on the subject of sustainability. Nominations are invited for buildings and projects of any size, type and age. A nomination can be made by anyone, for a project with which they have been intimately involved or one they have just admired from afar.

The aim of the book is to communicate that sustainability does not translate into a particular aesthetic or a particular design approach. SEDA does not intend for ‘100 Sustainable Scottish Buildings’ to be a list of the top one hundred, but instead it will highlight the benefits and evolving practice of sustainable design through evidence and comparison.

The submission deadline is 6th March 2016 As part of the year of Architecture and Design SEDA is publishing 100 Sustainable Scottish Buildings, a glossy hardback visual and written resource that demonstrates the diversity found in sustainable projects in Scotland tnat will be punctuated by a series of essays on the subject of sustainability…

Hi folks! The SEDAbuild School has not been so active this summer as we try and organise funding but we are pleased to invite you all to an upcoming event at Milton Community Garden.

On Wednesday, 9 September from 10:45am the Community Garden and Milton Memorial Garden will be officially opened to the public! The garden has already been running successful weekly fruit and veg barras but the time has come to celebrate all the hard work achieved by all involved.

It was our pleasure to help the garden when we ran our first ever course; the green roof long weekend saw LoveMilton volunteers putting their all into learning about green roofs so their new skills could be transferred into the community garden.

A great project with a great day planned to celebrate. Check out what we got up to during our first training course :)

SEDAbuild School participants working on the first course got the opportunity to learn theory and practice behind green roof construction.

Over three days a green roof was made alongside guidance from expert Dusty Gedge during a day of building. Take a look to see how everyone got on!

Creative Construction: Finishing an Outdoor Classroom

Free next Tuesday? Fancy helping out LoveMilton volunteers? Head along to the outdoor classroom for 10am to get involved on the last day EVER working on the outdoor classroom. There is still a lot of tidying and painting to do so the more helping the merrier.

This has been a fantastic project and we look forward to seeing the pupils and teachers of Miltonbank Primary School using the outdoor classroom in the coming summer months.

Check out the amazing work achieved during our Creative Construction Course in March. We can’t believe what a fantastic weekend we had during the hands-on Creative Construction course where everyone worked to finish the outdoor classroom at Miltonbank Primary School. Over three-days...

Well done to LoveMilton for winning in their category at the Evening Times Streets Ahead Awards! A well deserved win. We are looking forward to seeing your achievements in the future.

Best of luck to LoveMilton at the Evening Times Streets Ahead Awards tonight! They are nominated in the Clean Glasgow Environment Initiative category and we think they deserve it due to all their amazing hard work.

Well done for getting nominated guys!!

Check out these fantastic photos of the final Kettle Studio in Dunollie, Oban designed and built by the amazing guys over at Tog Studio! Well done everyone the cafe is looking great, we will need to make a visit soon to get a lovely cup of coffee.

Only a few more coats of paint and finishing off the drainage down pipe and the outdoor classroom will be handed over to the pupils and teachers of Miltonbank Primary School. If you're interested in helping out with the painting (made from cheese!) why not head along to the classroom next Tuesday to get involved with making the paint and getting everything colourful for the kids.

At the end of October we ran our first course and it was a great success. A three-day green roof course with guest tutor Dusty Gedge saw volunteers understand the theory and practice behind green roofing on the outdoor classroom and it is looking great!

Green roofs are fantastic for wildlife, the environment and insulating buildings so we are chuffed to bits to see it starting to grow. We will be keeping you all updated on the progress of the green roof in the summer months.

Raw Architecture Workshop Project 1 The Glenancross House

Raw Architecture Workshop have completed an interesting and innovative build in the Scottish Highlands encompassing various levels of environmental considerations.

The build is located in Knoydart with a unique look over three levels to make the house appear to come out of the land. Local labour, skills and materials used and the inclusion of an air source heat pump and super insulation helps this house have an environmentally friendly twist.

Have a look at pictures of the finished house and let us know what you think about it. RAW has completed a new build house on steeply sloping former rough grazing land at Camusdarach Sands. The clients, a young couple already living and working in this isolated location, were keen that we develop the proposals to capture the spectacular sun rise views over the mountains and sun set be…

ORKIDSTUDIO is a great organisation helping people through innovative architecture and construction. The team are currently working with Mary's Meals a charity working to provide meals for 989,000 hungry children worldwide. Orkidstudio and their volunteers are designing and building kitchens in Kenya through creativity and using architecture as a tool to relieve poverty.

We love organisations that work to change people's perceptions and ways of life through architecture, design and construction. Make sure you keep up with both Orkidstudio and Mary's Meals to see the great work they get up to.

Following on from LoveMilton's community owned land blog we have discovered The Glass-House Community Led Design who also believe community activity is the way forward for self-builds.

An independent charity, the Glass-House Community Led Design work to promote public participation by providing training and hands-on support to community groups and many more.

We too believe that providing local communities with the relevant skills and training to complete builds we can see vast improvements in communities. Have a look at our latest training course finishing an outdoor classroom to see the type of work we get up to.

Check out this mine transformation! Using materials found on site, including 2000 large boulders, the open mine has been changed into a work of art. We love seeing the innovative ideas others can create from old materials in amazing locations.

Can you dig it? A former opencast coal mine has been transformed into a work of landscape art.

Self Build and the City - LoveMilton in Glasgow

An interesting blog from LoveMilton on the importance of community land ownership. We work in partnership with the charity helping to up-skill people in various construction skills on sustainable builds. LoveMilton hope to utilise the skills of volunteers when working on their self-build community centre.

However without community owned land, where the community can see what will be best for their local area, the build will be unable to go ahead. We are happy to see progress happening and hope LoveMilton can start building some time next year. Community owned land puts the future of development into the hands of those who live, work and volunteer in the local area who understand what their community needs to prosper.

How to Make Paint from Milk Curds

The natural paint made from cheese and vodka is sitting ready to be used this afternoon to paint the outdoor classroom. Pupils from Miltonbank Primary will also be helping out with our environmentally and child friendly paint to make the Little Build nice and colourful.

Get Rugged believe that "natural self-build is a journey which begins and ends with the environment in mind". A wonderful Scottish Charity working to promote sustainable self-builds with the environment in mind, Get Rugged focus their energy in coming up with creative ways to make buildings that are affordable but natural and environmentally friendly.

Similar to SEDAbuild School and the work we do with LoveMilton we believe that the way forward with sustainable building is to respect the environment when building and using all reclaimed materials. We love and respect the work Get Rugged do and look forward to see what they get up to in the future; pop them a visit if you like the sound of what they're doing.

The Final Push: Cladding, Digging and Drilling

It's been a lovely day so far! More work is still taking place on site but here's what we've been getting up to this morning! Work has been continuing on the outdoor classroom in Milton, North Glasgow to get all the finishing touches added. Volunteers from LoveMilton have been attending the classroom on a weekly basis to tidy up the surrounding area of the classroom and getting the final sections of wood sawed, sanded and connected. Originally an old reused shipping container, the Little Build was designed by architecture students from the Glasgow School of Art with the final design selected by members of the Milton community to provide an outdoor learning area for the local school, Miltonbank Primary. Excited to get back on site today with LoveMilton volunteers to get some extra work on the outdoor classroom done. We will be making sure to update you with the progress throughout the day so you can all see the work achieved.

Want to enjoy the sun and do some volunteering? Tomorrow we will be back on site to paint, saw and drill on the outdoor classroom. If you are free and interested in getting involved helping out why not meet us on site from 10am to get working on all the little finishing touches.

Everything is really starting to take shape with the finished stairs and railings, we can't wait to see what it all looks like completed!

Creative Construction: In Pictures

The final push to finish the outdoor classroom for the pupils and teachers of Miltonbank Primary School is nearly here!

We are looking for volunteers to help us and LoveMilton participants make the final touches to the classroom on Tuesday 14 April from 10am - 4pm. This is free and open to everyone interested in helping out with some extra building and painting.

We hope to see lots of you getting involved next Tuesday. Fingers crossed the sun pays us a visit. Visit the post for more.

The Bothy Project » Build

Is there anything better than waking up to the wonderful sights of nature? The Bothy Project provides just that chance with live/work space for artist residencies.

This is a great project with the environment in the heart of the build. The Inshriach Bothy, situated in the woodlands of Cairngorms National Park, is insulated with sheep wool, a wood burning stove, rainwater harvesting system and solar panel lighting systems amongst a selection of other eco-friendly items.

There are many ways that we can build whilst taking care of the environment, making buildings sustainable and using reclaimed materials. Here at SEDAbuild School we hope to continue providing training opportunities to help educate on sustainable builds and much more.

The excitement is quickly building in the office! We cannot wait to get on site tomorrow for the final push to complete the outdoor classroom. It has been fantastic seeing everything take shape and we couldn't have done it without all the people involved.

Groups of architecture students from the Mackintosh School of Architecture came up with designs for the classroom before LoveMilton volunteers worked hard last summer to construct the classroom out of an old shipping container and other reclaimed materials.

Fingers crossed we have the sun shining tomorrow as we get everything finished.
