【English/Japanese chat group】

Hope you are all keeping well and safe in this crazy world that we find ourselves in.

Recently I have been running some English/Japanese chat sessions using webcams.
I had been thinking about a way to solve two problems at the same time. I really wanted my students to get more exposure to native Japanese and also my friends to get more confident at speaking English.

We’ve had a lot of fun during the last few weeks, and I’d like to expand the opportunity to more people :)
Are you ready to start improving your Japanese, to enjoy speaking and learning with some native speakers? It’s more relaxed than a lesson, but we do follow a simple format including introductions, talking about hobbies, holidays, or anything you like! You’ll pick up new words and structures along the way as the conversation flows.

The class is on Saturday between 1:00pm and 2:00pm. The first session for any new member is always free, and after that the cost is just £3, and you can pay by bank transfer or Paypal.

If you are interested then please send me a message or comment and I will send you more details.🥰🌸

🍱 Furoshiki workshop 🍱

Are you interested learning about traditional Japanese culture that is also Eco friendly and good for the environment? Then this class is for you!
In this workshop you will learn lots of wrapping techniques, including how to wrap a square “Bento box” shape, a wine bottle and a how to make a hand bag from one single Furoshiki cloth.
You will also enjoy a delicious homemade Japanese Bento lunch together at the end.

What are furoshiki?
Furoshiki are traditional Japanese versatile cloths, in various sizes, designs and materials, with many different possible applications.

They are usually crafted from natural materials such as cotton, and more recently linen and even polyester. Originally they were used in the middle of the Nara period (710 to 794AD) in traditional Japanese public baths (Onsen), to wrap up your clothes and avoid a mix-up with other people. Although the art of furoshiki is still popular in Japan, their use was slowly declining due to the massive production and availability of plastic bags. Recently however, the cloth is experiencing a revival. Japanese designers and manufacturers came together to create furoshiki that were not only useful, but also good looking.

Furoshiki are great for carrying groceries home, or anything else really, and they can help to reduce plastic bag and other packaging consumption. Furthermore, furoshiki are very stylish and multifunctional, and they have the potential to replace multiple things at once; shopping bags, purses, picnic sheets, scarves, blankets, wrapping paper, and many more. Furoshiki do need a pair of crafty hands to help them get into shape for whatever tasks lie ahead of them. With simple knotting, furoshiki transforms from a plain cloth into a stylish bag in no time.

Date: 29th June 2019
Time: 10am – 12pm
Place: Farnham Maltings (Meeting room 1)
Price: £50 (includes 2 authentic furoshiki from Japan)
All materials included
Enjoy a delicious homemade Japanese Bento lunch together at the end. (If you have any special dietary requirements then please let me know when you make your reservation.)

Yes, this is how we celebrate Valentine‘s day in Japan.

-Happy Valentine’s Day!💛
ハッピーバレンタイン

In Japan it is men who are receiving gifts from women today. For Valentine's Day, it is customary for women to give 'giri choco' (obligation chocolate) to their male friends and colleagues, and 'honmei choco', usually of higher quality and more expensive, to their loved one.

Shops put on elaborate displays and offer a vast variety of Valentine's Day chocolates, like these beautifully packaged matcha (green tea powder) chocolates by 'Itohkyuemon', a tea and sweets specialty shop in Uji, Kyoto.

The favour is returned a month later, on 'White Day', when it is men's turn to give gifts to women.

Traditional Japanese fun game played in the New Year’s class.

This game is called “Fuku warai” - while blindfolded you have to try to make a face.
We shared lots of laughs, meaning that this year will be a good year!
