Can't beat a relaxing evening by the fire !!
Foraging for nettles today and also managed to bag a pigeon!! I will be having the pigeon for lunch tomorrow and I will try a few different ideas with the nettles including pesto !
Haven't had fox trouble for quite a while. I had a lovely little Araucana who had a cracking personality and character!! Problem is she was a brilliant escape artist and every day got out the run and enjoyed free roaming around the farm !!
As much as I would love a farm with chickens roaming free all over the place, the sad reality is that is not practical. This chicken finally met its maker around 17:00 when a fox got it 😩. Sad to see her gone but livestock is livestock and it's just something that happens.
Hopefully no foxes manage to get in to my run, it has high deer fencing, deep dug in wire and 10,000v electric fencing.
The morning after the chicken had been taken I was awoken early by crows and magpies making an almighty racket. I quickly run downstairs shotgun in hand and I see the fox sniffing around the pen. I open the door stuck my barrel out and managed to drop it on the spot with no 3 56g 3" magnum hull cartridge !!
Job done !!

Another successful stalk to fork !! I'm playing around with batches of different burger seasonings. Food miles are literally 100 yards. This was deer was shot in my garden, skinned under my apple trees and butchered in the kitchen over looking the garden.
What a fantastic day and night out! Pub in the afternoon a great feast in the evening followed by fine whiskeys ci**rs and chocolate!! With some great company and have a great time full of jokes and laughter.
Keep good friends close and you will have a happy life !! The best times I have ever had have been with my closest friends around a fire !!
Another stalk to fork !!!
Sadly I didn't do the stalking on this particular occasion but I did the rest, skinned, butchered and made the burgers. Thank-you so much Will Archer for the deer. I can't wait to get some friends round a fire and feast !!!

Foraging for gorse petals!!
Inspired and taught by the fantastic Foraged by Fern we headed out foraging for gorse petals today to make some gorse mead made from gorse, and local honey brewed up with birch water
Literally a stalk to fork journey.
It is so important to know where your food comes from, stalking is a great way to do this, it is a ethical and environmental friendly.
Respect for the animal you are hunting is paramount, in life and in death, most of this deer was used but I still feel guilty not using the bones and skin, however I am slowly learning how I can use these and not wate them.
This Roe buck was taken as part of a pest control programme and as you can see I did every stage from the stalk to butchering it and making some lovley burgers. As deer have no natural predators it is good to keep a healthy population of the right numbers, too many can increase the spread of disease and cause a shortagein food. Deer management is much more than just heading out and taking a deer, it takes many days of tracking and monitoring numbers and conditions of the deer.
If you decide that hunting is something for you make sure you do it correctly are are 100% confident on what you are doing, if for one moment you doubt yourself take more time to practice, hunting has to be done properly and of course with in all restraints of the law.

Wild camping and feasting so many good meals on this weekend of camping and bushcraft. Everyone bringing there own bit to the table and coming togther as a community to prep and cook togther !! Such a pure feeling of living, we spent the days collecting fire wood and prepping everything for cooking (Fyi pre-covid days)
So happy with all the great bits of bespoke leather work I have had made by Paul Dore leathercraft.
Foraging/dump pouch is a great bit of kit to have on your belt, simple and sleek, if you stumble across any foraging treats.
Knife sheath speaks for itself but this design is fantastic, it can worn on the left, right or scout carry. The knife was a fully custom build made my the fantastically skilled Warpath Forge
Tinder pouch. This is a perfect size and is an essential bit of kit for bushcraft.
Axe mask and over swing protector. I refurbished this kent style axe and made the handle. The leather work is a great way of protecting it.
Spear pouch. This was a spear forged from an old file rasp by Mohawk forge I love the leather pouch to keep it sharp and clean.
Stalk to fork.
This day was super fresh food, we spend the morning shooting in the hide, what we shot got cooked up in the hide for lunch, the last pigeon we shot before we stopped was butched and cooked within 30 minutes!! Now that's fresh.
This shooting was done to help a fellow farmer out, pigeon cost farmer thousands of pounds worth of damage to crops. This is an ethical, responsible, sustainable, and environmentally friendly way of eating meat. I truly believe in only take what you need and never waste. I never take a life unnecessary and respect all life.
Using my Vango camping stove, a fantastic Morakniv, my own hand made cherry chopping board and of course the great BERETTA a400 running Hull Cartridge Company special pigeons

Cooking up a gumbo
Gumbo's are a great dish for a group of people. The recipe comes from Louisiana USA and is what's known as a soul food, food that brings people togther in hard times (typically funerals or sometimes even street partys)
There are many different recipes and variants for flavours however they all usually start with a 'roux' of fat and flour. The word gumbo comes from the African word for okra ( a vegetable introduced to America by African slaves)
Get Googling and come up with your own twist on the gumbo! My favourite is a sea food gumbo.
Get your gumbo on and keep up the spirts with some American soul music !!
I love farming and living off the land. There is no better feeling than fresh produce that you have worked hard to achieve.
Fresh eggs ready for a lunch time omelette.
Shop local and support local farmers if you can less food miles and better for the environment and economy!
After a day fishing and collecting crayfish, we cooked up this feast with a few extras purchased from the local farm shop.
Crayfish(American signal crayfish) are an invasive species in our waters, they carry a disease that kills our native species, they are also bigger and fight and sometimes even eat them too.
I'm swarms they live in the river banks. Burrowing into the bank with little holes this makes the river banks very soft and speeds erosion causing rivers banks to collapse.
Crayfish are a great tastey treat that are great for the environment and biodiversity. Remember to do your research on the laws and regulations surrounding cray fishing and respect our wonderful countryside.
Cooking up dinner and brewing a coffee for breakfast. Solo bushcraft weekend !!
